This is an excellent book! It explains many things I've noticed but didn't comprehend well in FreeBSD and Linux. The authors are very gifted at communicating, a rare gift concerning tech book and online doc authors (generally, such works so dull, they may merely serve (too often) as ambiguous reference material). The authors also give some interesting history about FreeBSD and its competitors; they give a very compelling case for the OS, which was first being developed in the era of the first moon landing and in the heart of the cold war.The authors give the steps for setting up the GUI, and many options for this (this is bedeviling for many of us--a default GUI doesn't "pop-up" after install as in commercially-supported Linux, Windows, and the Mac OS--one "builds" the GUI from a low level with desired features), and, also, the authors explain the reasons for having to set up the GUI (the OS is favored by server users who prefer a lean command-line interface).The bewildering VI editor is thoughtfully explained in some detail as well: It is a high-powered, yet, heavily keyboard-command dependent (and user-unfriendly) text editor that often is necessary for system configuration and software development. It's not user friendly (or "intuitive") because it was developed in the aforementioned cold-war era of really limited computer power and storage: Needless to say, it hasn't changed much....The book, which I haven't yet finished but am eagerly reading daily, gives many caveats (such as configuring the sync settings of monitors correctly). FreeBSD is not a good OS for a PC newbie to learn to use (at least not without a knowledgeable mentor); nevertheless, I think this is a very good intro book for gamers and high-level techies--these may wish to use FreeBSD in advanced ways such as for servers, developing firewalls, as well as for common internet/e-mail and other networking tasks (such tasks are inherently more secure and speedy on FreeBSD)--or for those well-exposed to Linux, or Apple OSX--cousin-OSes or, in the latter case, a direct descendant....

As a FreeBSD enthusiast I could say that everything is on the handbook, but I'd be a liar. Everything about FreeBSD is on FreeBSD.For all those who have heard about FreeBSD and desire to start from scratch (i.e. moving from Windows), you'll need all the help you can get: you'll have to look for the Complete FreeBSD book, the Handbook (printed or online) and will be surfing the FreeBSD man pages after the instalation... and then you'll have to use your own creativity imagination and all the internet search engines available to understand and implement this beautiful OS. But the results are excellent, the stability and security that FreeBSD offers are outstanding.FreeBSD Unleashed is certainly a book which has many updated information and shares many common points with the books mentioned above, however, all of them complement each other. I certainly recommend this book for everyone who needs a good reference book for FreeBSD and already owns the others mentioned.Good Luck!

I preorder this book, and waited by 2 months until it was published, but FreeBSD 6 really was a good choice. It is well wrote, but for my is necessary a better chapter reference, because I used it like a reference book and some time I need to look in the entire book to find a specific topic.

This book isn't for me.You would think a FreeBSD book in 2006 will tell you things like how to keep your system safe with binary updates, or walk you through a decent CUPS installation, or mention using OpenBSD's firewall tool. It's just the same-old same-old. There's little here that can't be learned from the Handbook or Greg Lehey's The Complete FreeBSD. And both are free. To be fair, there is new stuff here, like installing the official Sun JDK port for FreeBSD, or using portupgrade, but I expected a little more thoroughness and variation in choices in the areas of security, ports and printing. Also, I think a chapter about contributing to the FreeBSD ports tree would have been good to have.However, if you're new to Unix/FreeBSD, than I think you will enjoy the chatty style instead of the rather more terse style of The Handbook.

The 34-year-old Kirkland, who triumphed at the New York City Ballet and American Ballet Theater in the 1970s, reveals her one-time addiction to cocaine; that her affair with dancer Patrick Bissell was predicated on their mutual addiction to the drug; that both her romantic and artistic relationships with Baryshnikov were untenable because of his adolescent and unrelenting narcissism ("How was it possible that Misha's resources as an artist, so evident in performance, were different from those of his basic personality?"); that in 1981 she committed herself to a Westchester psychiatric hospital, even as she knew that her anorexia, bulimia and drug addiction were only symptoms of deeper emotional problems. The memoir also serves as a devastating critique of the American dance establishment that cannot be ignored. New York City Ballet founder George Balanchine (who gave Kirkland amphetamine "vitamins" on a tour of the U.S.S.R.) emerges as patronizing, vindictive, petty but still a genius. Through the 1970s and early 1980s, Kirkland nearly paid with her life for "the passivity and guilt instilled by the Balanchine system"a dance theater that valued speed and form over dramatic content. "Don't think, dance," Kirkland was told. The ballerina's disaffection with that dictum is at the heart of this book: "To speak through the dance, to articulate something beyond the steps, was the precise art for which I struggled." The ballet equivalent of a "tell-it-all" Hollywood biography, this is a horror story of pain, anorexia, emotional difficulties, and casual sex, culminating in four years of cocaine addiction that brought her career to a standstill. At odds with both Balanchine and Baryshnikov in her insistence on putting her own dramatic interpretation into her roles, she is highly critical of Balanchine's training methods and Baryshnikov's partnering skills, which she says lacked finesse both on and off the stage. Her serious accusations that ballet training produces mindless mechanical dolls, and that the rigors of the life drive dancers to drug abuse, are undermined by her shrill, fragmented tone, making this a sad self-justification. Book has been changed from the original version written about 30 years ago and does not include a lot of things which you must buy a sequel to get. This disappointed me as I wanted the original version, which I read when it was first published. I wanted to now read it as an older person and think it over again along with the ballet world today compared with then. But too much was left out I think in an attempt to get us to buy more books or at least the sequel or another book after this which may have contained what I wanted to know not sure. Perhaps she got rid of a lot of some of the things which were not as flattering yet still they were important and knowing how to her life went and what happened in the ballet World during those times 3 decades ago.

First off- I so disagree with the poor reviews that Gelsey was a narcissist. She did not love herself, and was not preoccupied with herself. She was just trying to find a way to LIVE with herself without destructive thoughts and behaviors.The writing- so real and raw. I believe probably 90% of it, as there's no way she would have been able to recall all of her exact coversations word for word. Also, she makes a lot of assumptions about other people's unspoken attitudes towards her- many could have been true; but who knows.The story- Gelsey was a tortured soul from the beginning. It's like she saw the world in a deeper way than most do. Felt things deeper; saw her imagination as if it were all real in the world; wanted to understand herself and others at all costs. I wrote in the title that it was inspiritational because of how she describes her artistic endevours. She was so concerned with the art of ballet that money and people's opinions didn't matter. Whether she was received well or not by the public didn't matter. She just wanted to create art as perfectly as possible; an impossible but noble pursuit. It's what sets her apart from the ballet dancer who just performs technique. She strived for every detail, every muscle movement, every emotion, every lift, to be....I can't even describe it because she never seems to quite be able to describe or answer her question of what this art is that she does. It's a beautifully written autobiography; she makes you feel as though you know her personally by the end. It will drive you to look and feel deeper when exploring any artform. Many have read this book and by the end felt they no longer looked up to Gelsey or Balanchine. I didn't feel that negativity or indifference. They were human, and therefore flawed in both their personal and professional lives.Her next book was The Shape of Love which I have yet to read. She is no longer married to Greg Lawrence, the co-author of both books. I hope she writes a third. I especially look foward to seeing how sucessful her ballet school becomes; The Gelsey Kirkland Academy of Classical Ballet.

Great memoir from a very gifted dancer--one of my favorites. I read it, 30-some years ago, when it came out, and I gave it to my friend, who had a cocaine addiction--for whom it did not "work, unfortunately, in getting her clean and sober--so I recently decided to get my own copy and read it again. I, too, struggled with substance abuse issues, but I am clean and sober nearly 24 years now. Unfortunately, Gelsey's book didn't have the desired effect on me, either, in that way--maybe because cocaine was something I only occasionally tried and didn't like, unlike her, who abused it a lot before she and Greg Lawrence, her then-husband and co-author, became clean.

Gelsey Kirkland manages to take you first hand into the secret and most hidden world of the Ballet. I find her extremely open and her descriptions are raw and realistic with no apologies for the reality that is being a prima ballerina and belonging to the prestigious American Ballet. She begins her story from a young girl living the Hollywood style life provided by her famous playwright father Jack Kirkland. It gives you a insight on how and why she shaped her future. She is candid and humble in her descriptions and reasonings and does not leave much to the imagination. I found it compelling as I have had a brief history myself doing ballet, but now after reading Gelsey's bio have a very strong understanding to as why now I am not a ballerina! These women and men are truly gifted human beings who's art of dance is truly something to be admired. Saying that, Gelsey leads you thru the road it takes to get there. We see the ballet as pretty and elegant, something little girls dream of being while sleeping in there beds. However, the truth is shockingly different. You will truly relish this book whether or not your a fan of the ballet, an actual ballerina or a lover of the arts.

I bought this for my daughter who is currently studying dance. She will also be attending Gelsey's summer intensive this summer. This book will give you an inside look at the ballet world especially under Ballanchine. This woman deserves a medal for putting up with Balanchine and dating Baryshnikov!!! One thing I can say is that this woman is a survivor! Even though the ballet world is full of women it is mostly run by men directors. Men are treated like Gods in the ballet world. I love that Gelsey Kirkland is a strong female Director in a sea of men who do't have a clue about the female dancer. Although her school seems to be doing extremely well, her summer intensive (SI) has been rated #1 ballet SI in NYC, it is extremely expensive to run a dance school/company especially in NYC. I hope that people continue to donate to her school and support more women directors in the ballet world. Please Donate!!! This book is really about a woman trying to survive in a man's world in the 60's and 70's. The competition for these women is fierce. Highly recommend.

Bob Fu wanted to help his desperately poor family and village and was a top student. He became a student leader in college, desiring for a career to make money for his family. He saw corruption everywhere and then worked for Tiananmen Square protests. He was devastated with the results. When under "college house" arrest and not wanting to live, he was given the book about Xi Zizhi, who had tried every philosophy and religion and finally turned to Jesus. Reading that book was the turning point for Bob Fu as he saw Truth, and he became a changed man, wanting to live, willing to have nothing and take on a "double identity" in order to share his faith. He taught classes for communist leaders in the day while he shared his faith at night. The government was threatened by his faith and he ended up in prison. He and his family escaped. But his story doesn't end there as even now in 2013, he is dedicated to help others who are tortured and imprisoned in China. Much goes on behind closed doors that seem like a horror movie but are real even today. This book stirred my heart and opened my eyes in a huge way.

I just finished reading the story of a Vietnamese girl (Mai) who was converted in Hong Kong and after waiting for five years for her visa to migrate to the US or Australia, the Lord Himself changed her direction and she returned to Vietnam to preach the Gospel. All of this to say, how similar are the tactics of the Chinese and Vietnamese authorities when either one are determined to bread their Christian "victims." I was kept on the edge of my seat, as I read of Bob's and Heidi's narrow escapes and then all over again, as Bob returned to China or to places where China's agents could have captured him as he was seeking to bring others to freedom. I thought that the Vietnamese definition of religious freedom was very interesting, "'we keep religious freedom in a box' and we let our people worship any way they want to as long as it is where and how we approve." This was not word for word but it communicates the idea pretty well. I think the Chinese would agree with that definition.

My family and I played the first activity in the book about what things do you think you cannot live without. Once we got to the part where you have to eliminate items on the list that you can live without, it was very interesting to see the choices made. My son actually chose toys, electronics, etc first. I guess I am setting a good example and teaching him what is most valuable and that is love and family!!

Great book. I've used it several times in classroom lessons and small group counseling sessions. It is broken into chapters surrounding different qualities and characteristics to encourage in children. Most lessons don't require too many props or supplies.

The range of topics addressed is rather inclusive, and the activities are designed to appeal to all types of learners (visual, auditory, kinesthetic). The activities offer a creative approach to each topic, and are nice springboards for deeper discussions. I am certain this book will be utilized both in my home and in my classroom!

I learned how to applique when I was very young, spending evening after evening with my great grandmother trying to perfect it. My first project was an applique butterfly on my very first purse. This book brings me back in the best kinds of ways. I was overjoyed to see several wonderfully classic patterns that seem timeless. There were also several interesting patterns that I hadn't seen before and that made me excited to try them out.It's been too long since I've last made anything, and this book gave me a push in the right direction.There are very helpful links to the full-size patterns so that you can print and begin right away! Very helpful.I would highly recommend this book to all fans of applique.

This applique book will be given to my friend Rosa, she wants to learn how to applique and I am showing her. Than so much for the easy beginner appliques, this will give her a great start.

This book has pretty patterns you can put on your clothes. There are lots of them to choose from so everyone should be able to find one they like. You have to go to a website to print out a copy of the pattern you want to make. I think I'm going to like making these designs.

This is a nice book of applique patterns for quilting or apparel. I found some amazing designs that I had never seen before. The instructions are written well, especially for those who are beginners with applique or just need a refresher.

Great inspiration, with links to patterns and more! They show working on different fabrics and different projects. A well rounded book!

Beginners will benefit mostly. Good for ideas, simple patterns with easy to follow instructions, and many clever sayings. Very usefull.

Contains great instructions and patterns for applique. I bought this book for my wife because she likes to quilt. She fell in love with the book, and told me to write a review. Good book all around and I highly recommend it.
