“We went wild that hot night. We howled, we raged, we screamed. We were girls — some fourteen and fifteen; some sixteen, seventeen — but when the locks came undone, the doors of our cells gaping open and no one to shove us back in, we made the noise of savage animals, of men.”
A few years ago now, I read and fell in love with Nova Ren Suma’s Imaginary Girls, an emotionally complicated sister-centered story with a touch of creepy and unsettling magical realism. It’s a story that still haunts me, sneaking from behind the shadows into the foreground of my mind. A book that I treasure in my soul and a level of achievement that I aspire to in my own writing.Nova Ren’s latest novel, The Walls Around Us, has the same kind of haunting quality, and not just because it’s a ghost story. It’s a tale that lingers long after you’ve put it down.Three girls are the center of this story — Amber is a young woman convicted of murder who has been locked in prison for years; Violet, a ballet dancer with a dark secret; and Orianna, a girl caught in a tide of misfortune who binds the other two together. Their stories weave together unveiling lies and secrets and the truth behind a murder.Alternating between Amber and Violet’s points of view, the story unfolds with a feeling of inevitability, a sense that everything has happened before and cannot be stopped from happening again. Neither girl is nice or easy; instead they are both complicated and difficult, having made dangerous decisions that lead to catastrophes that define their lives. Where Nova Ren’s skill is clear is in how she manages to generate a feeling of fascination and sympathy for both of these girls. Violet in particular is an awful human being, and yet I found myself pitying her and how she has cut herself off from feeling for anyone else in the world and a part of me wanted her to make it to Julliard despite all the things she’s done.Amber is particularly interesting to me in the way she erases herself into the group of her fellow prisoners, rarely using the singular “I” and more often using the plural “we”, as though their stories and her own story were the same, as though they are all one body of girls moving through the prison system. Her own personal story slowly unfolds but never quite condemns or absolves her of any crime. She is both guilty and a victim of society and circumstances, screwed over by the man her mother married and the system. A girl taken for granted, as many in the prison are.Rich, gorgeous prose brings the world inside this prison for young women and the outside world (for this books seems to divide the world into two realms – inside and outside) to vivid, brutal reality. The supernatural aspects of this tale are subtle, weaved in among grounded real-world details enabling a level of plausibility. The effect — of not just the supernatural elements, but the entire story — is unsettling in all the right ways. Although the end is satisfying, this is a novel without easy answers, one to ponder after finishing, and then to go back and reread and ponder some more.

Ahoy there me mateys! This book was lyrical and confusing and a good read. I am not sure where I learned about this book. The story centers around the murder of two fifteen-year-olds. The book switches points of view between two people: 1) Violet, an 18 year old ballet dancer; and 2) Amber, a prisoner in Aurora Hills juvenile detention center. Both points of view discuss among other things, a girl named Orianna. The book is confusing because the plot does not follow a straight timeline and the two girls’ perspectives also contradict each other. I had no real idea of what the premise of the book was and so for most of my read I was trying to figure out what the point was. I mean, I had figured out who dunnit pretty early on. But why we were in the heads of these two particular characters was a little more difficult. That said, I found Amber’s story of juvi prison life and her own reasons for being in there to be extremely interesting. Her perspective gives us a look at life inside the center. I loved everything around the center’s library. Her viewpoint of the other girls at the center is fascinating. The other girls at the center seemed both unique and real. It is quite a complex little microcosm.Violet’s sections seem to be about the relationship that she and Ori had and what that meant to her. While she was not a nice person, her voice was engaging. Having worked with ballerinas before, the dance portion of this book felt very real if overdramatized for the purposes of the novel. This book was not a quick read for me. I had a hard time convincing myself to go forward because of the structuring of the narrative. But the voice of Amber in particular kept drawing me back in. The writing was beautiful in many ways. I wanted to know how everything would tie together. When I eventually got to the ending, it surprised me. I am not sure if I liked it. I am not sure that I didn’t. I am however glad that I finished it. I can’t guarantee that everyone will like this novel. But if you read it, I would love to hear your take on it . . .If you liked this review, see me others on [...]

Grade A-In one week. Violet will head to Juilliard to study ballet. Before she leaves, she wants to visit Aurora Hills Juvenile Detention Center, the site where her best friend Ori died after being convicted of killing two fellow dancers. Amber, jailed for killing her stepfather, recounts her life in lockup. Vee and Amber are connected through Ori.THE WALLS AROUND US is a confusing, compelling, almost poetic novel about the meanings of innocence and guilt, what can be proven, what we acknowledge, what we deny and the lies we tell ourselves and others where truth and lies are Yin and Yang. Nova Suma has created a beautiful story with three very distinct main characters. Although Violet is selfish and sometimes unkind, I felt empathy for her, always in Ori's shadow. Amber, the other narrator, is rougher around the edges and more sympathetic. We see Ori through their eyes and she's less developed than the others. For much of the book, I wondered if what I thought was happening plot wise was occurring, or if I was just confused. Normally, I would hate this and give up on the book, but Suma kept my eyes focused on my kindle. THE WALLS AROUND US didn't quite pull me in enough to keep me up all night reading, but I couldn't wait to start the next morning and I read straight through until the end. I normally don't read ghost stories, I prefer realistic fiction, so this review is high praise from me.I hated the ending of the book. The first 95% was so creative and unique, I thought the ending felt contrived and unoriginal. If you're looking for something different and exquisitely written, you'll enjoy THE WALLS AROUND US.

#243,964 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This book goes out of it's way to be hard to follow and understand. I found myself re-reading sections multiple times to tie the concept together in my head. Usually it's a good idea to use multiple resources for study as it gives you a better understanding of the concepts when learned in different ways. In this case I'm not sure it's worth using this book as one of those sources. If I knew what I know now before I bought it I would have put the $50 towards a different training material.

There are so many things on the exam that are either not covered at all in this book, or the book only mentions the topic and doesn't tell you how it works. Then you get to the exam and are in way over your head. It's a shame Cisco's own certification guide doesn't provide enough detail to give you the proficiency to answer the exam questions.

Pros: unlike some technical books I bought in the Kindle version, this book displays correctly on my Kindle Fire.Cons: Kindle version does not include access to the practice tests, which is really the main reason I buy Cisco books for the tests. Since the discount for the electronic version is not that big, this omission does not make sense. All you get access to is some videos and three or so pdfs.I returned the Kindle version and bought the hardback (and yes, I saw the comments about the other content issues with this book).

I agree with the other comments. This book doesn't not have all the information needed to pass the 300-101 exam. I gave it two stars because I have the book for the previous version of the ROUTE exam (642-902) and it was worse in my opinion. Neither book covers PPP, which is listed as an exam topic on the Cisco Learning site. I'm going to be looking for another source of TSHOOT information.

Use the FLG and follow the offician cisco syllabus line for line. I absolutely committed to this book and i have just reached the tipping point and put it aside for just the syllabus and FLG and the online cisco resources. Kevin Wallace is absolutely brilliant with Cisco and his explanations on YouTube are great, but this book is not for me.

By all means it is a decent base to start with, but you will be clueless when it comes to exam if you follow just what is in this book. Missing so much, gives you a tiny paragraph and the exam will ask you 5 detailed questions on a topic. You prepare for lots of EIGRP, OSPF, BGP questions, and legit get like 3 on the exam. Worst Cisco book I've used.

I read this cover to cover as main certification material for exam, I however didn't pass the exam. I found that some exam objectives are not covered in this book.

Currently There really aren't any other options for studying for 300-101in book form, but Kevin Wallace goes out of his way to make sure a subject needs to be overly complex. I found a couple of errors so far. When watching CBT nuggets these subjects are very simple to understand, granted CBT nuggets doesn't give you enough facts and doesn't go over all the material so you still need to read this book to get the 300-101 passed. I feel either he didn't care or he doesn't know how to make things not seem complex. His examples sometimes are counter intuitive.Hopefully there will be another option for this certification, Wendell Odom has made books for CCNA that have made the topics fairly simple to understand.

#40,136 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I reformed and became a light packer ever since a grueling hike in West Virginia last year, and I'm always looking for ways to tweak my gear and shed more weight. This book has lots of info and gets you thinking about ways to trim the fat out of your kit. While most of the tips were things I've already done, I still gained quite a few ideas for making my gear more efficient. It's a quick read, and easy to refer back to. Like the other reviewers have stated, Clelland's writing style is light-hearted with silly humor throughout.Pretty much my only point of disagreement is going into the wilderness without a knife. The author advises just carrying a single edged razor in your kit. Is this fine for most trips? Almost certainly. But if you are like me, and most of your travels take you deep in the wilderness far from any help, going without a good knife is irresponsible at best. Remember Murphy.

This is the book that took me from standard >40 pounds backing to lightweight <30 pounds backpacking. I don't use all of the 153 tips, but a majority have really helped me reduce my pack's base weight (down to 18.5 pounds) and made hiking and backpacking way more comfortable. I also enjoyed the sections throughout that cover the general philosophy of ultralight backpacking which can also translate into a general ultralight lifestyle philosophy (reduce all the clutter and useless stuff in your life). Highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to lighten their load on the trail. Easy to read with humorous and insightful drawings. I have notes and highlights throughout this book. I'm always asking myself questions about hiking gear and other stuff like: Do I *really* NEED this? Does it serve more than one purpose? Will it affect my comfort and safety?

This book is very funny, and takes a light hearted approach. You will find yourself laughing throughout the book. Some tips I want to draw your attention to.#4An aluminum cat food can pulled out of the the trash makes an efficient lightweight stove.Excuse me? The Super Cat (yes I have made those) is light weight but would not call it efficient especially on fuel. A standard Super cat will burn 1/4 cup of alcohol in 12 minutes. There are much more fuel efficient stoves for sale, and DIY vids on You Tube. In great conditions my MAHALO stove can boil two cups water with 12.5-15 ml of alcohol 1/4th the amount needed for a Super Cat. If you like to DIY there are two vids on You Tube giving the dimensions of the MAHALO 1.4, and 1.5 so you can build your own stove#8He recommends a single edge razor blade as a cutting tool instead of taking a knife. It's true that a razor blade can replace some of the cutting needs; but a Razor blade can NEVER replace a knife. A knife can baton wood for a camp fire, make furze sticks for tinder, and use to defend yourself. There is a huge difference between going light, and going stupid light. I will never leave my Mora with fire steel in the handle at home. My pack before adding consumables is only 11 pounds, and almost 1 pound is in my combination survival/first aid kit.#30 he revisited making a stove from a cat food can. He also said you can carry fuel for the stove in a soda bottle, and make a windscreen from aluminum foil.If you carry alcohol in a plastic bottle either put some food color in the alcohol, or put a warning on the bottle. You would not want someone drinking the alcohol believing it to be water.Making a windscreen from aluminum foil. Start with about 1.5 feet of aluminum foil. Keeping the width of the aluminum fold in half, and fold again. You will have a strip of aluminum as long as the roll, and 4 inches wide. It makes a decent windscreen. The article "Going SUL" by Ryan Jordan was a treat. SUL means Super UltraLight (pack weight of 5 pounds or less).#54 making your own toothpaste dots (dehydrating toothpaste, and cutting them in 1/2 inch segments so you can brush your teeth on the trail is a WONDERFUL idea instead of carrying a small tube of toothpaste.I am not going to leave toilet paper at home, and wipe with rock's leaves, or snow as the author suggests. As long as I get my pack down to less than 20 pounds with the food and fuel; that is as light as I need to go.

We called this style of hiking bivouacking in the boonies when I was a kid in the 1970’s. It was just barely tolerable back then—go light, freeze at night, if that was your cup of tea. Most of us were just fine with plain ol’ backpacking. My usual summer weight for a five day hike was about 25 pounds. Pack weight usually went up about 10 pounds in winter. We did just fine and had a lot of fun too. This is a tip book so there is an assumption of basic background knowledge. The author refers the reader to his other book for that basic knowledge. That’s fine but one referral is sufficient. Four referrals is annoying. The tips are a mixed bag as would be expected. My guess is some of the tips are just filler. Books compete for attention in a bookstore and there’s a minimum competitive width. My favorite tip is to weigh everything. My least favorite tip is to wipe after pooping by scooting across wet clumps of grass (maybe an attempt at humor?). The most dubious tip is using a razor blade as a cutting tool. The most ancient tip is using bread bags to keep your feet warm in cold weather. Most tips are just average and should serve to get you thinking. And that may be the author’s whole point.I would recommend this book to preppers who want to build usable bug-out bags. Most of these tips will make living out of a bug-out bag a whole lot more doable especially in the winter. Ex-backpackers over 50 who are looking to get back in the game will benefit too. 21st century materials technology has made bivouacking a reasonable way to go today. Maybe the only way if you have health issues. Everyone else, meh. Glean the tips from the internet or read them in one place. Depends on how you value serendipity versus time.Personally, I thought the most interesting thing about the book is how it neatly intersects Joseph Bottum’s book “An Anxious Age”. Bottum’s idea is the old mainstream Protestantism never went away. It simply morphed and dispersed. Some of it—both the good and the bad—informs the subtext of the book and ocassionally shines through in a tip. Fascinating.
