Abigail sometimes takes on guilt for things she shouldn't, giving her a bit of a martyr complex. Other times, she has the right idea about how to approach situations but tries to solve them selfishly, so that she benefits more than anyone else. Of course, some of that can be blamed on her years in an abusive marriage, but while Abigail's actions are true to that, she never comes across as a victim. She gets sympathy and empathy from readers not because she's pitiful, but because readers know she's doing the best she can in less than ideal circumstances.Speaking of which, David comes across like this in Abigail's story, too. Once again, he is deeply flawed. Abigail's story, more than Michal's, shows the complications of polygamy and why it never works--not just because of Old Testament law, but because it is not God's ideal or plan. Like all of us, David rationalizes wrong actions, but his repentance is always true. He and Abigail share some gratifying tender moments, but I think I liked some of their tension-filled interactions better. Their marriage shows the truth of any marriage--yes, it's romantic, but it's real. It can be raw; sometimes it can hurt. There will always be complications, and only God can walk us through those with fairness and mercy.Once again, Jill's research shines through in this novel, making the events of 1 Samuel feel as real and relevant as if they were happening right now. She also delves into the personalities and stories of some minor Biblical characters such as Chileab, the son born to Abigail and David. Artistic license exists, but it doesn't dishonor Scripture or damage the spirit of the real Biblical story.If I had to pick one negative thing, I'd say Jill used the words "foolish" and "fool" too much. Also, despite the fact that it was historically correct, the idea that Chileab would never be king because of a disability pricked my heart. However, these are minor and perhaps nonexistent issues when taken with the whole book. I'm so glad I found this series.

First off, I want to thank Jill Eileen Smith because this book series has got me into studying the life of David in the Bible AND I AM LEARNING SO MUCH. So it's a testament to a good Biblical fiction author.I did struggle with some areas of this book. I felt like maybe the focus sometimes were on the wrong things. Though Abigail only has that one "featured" story in the Bible, her and Ahinoam are mentioned a bunch of times as David is running from Saul and enters into Hebron. We were half way through the book before she even met David, and then some of these areas were just rushed into in my opinion. There was also some mention of her in the first book which I thought we would go into greater detail about in this book (ie David choosing her to lead the women after Michal refused, as he is bringing the ark of the covenant back to Jerusalem), which never happened. Also, since she wanted a baby so badly I was kind of surprised that this book skipped through the part where she found out she was pregnant.I think what I"m struggling with so far in the series as a whole, is David. Now I know there is evidence in the Bible that David wasn't a great husband or father so I think it's good that I dont find his relationships with his wives or children that genuine throughout the series. HOWEVER, the one thing that I shouldn't question about David is his love for God. David as he is portrayed in the series is a pretty flat character so even when he is talking about God I"m not feeling moved. Yes, he asks God for strength and creates songs and says a lot of praises but I want to feel that deep, personal love for God in him. My opinion might change when I read the last book, after he is reprimanded and humbled by God but we'll see!Also there is one inconsistency I found from the first book. David mentions in "Michal" that Abigail wanted to comfort him after Jonathan died, but he refused. I took this to mean that he didn't sleep with her that night. But in this book, he straight up tells her I need you physically for comfort and they sleep together. I dont know if I am remembering wrong but I'm pretty sure that happened!Anyway, I am still excited to read the next one!

Good read. It was helpful, I felt, that I had read Michal, the first book (& King David's first wife) before this, to set the stage. However, that being said, Abigal certainly had her own story to tell, & the author does this in a believable, sympathetic way, which like the first book, draws the reader right in to that ancient time & place beautifully. I will, no doubt, read the last in the series, Bathsheva, sometime soon. That may prove interesting, as it should show David in a less than perfect perspective. If you know about King David, you know what I'm referring to.I find that reading about biblical heroines in this kind of format brings them to life for me & I can feel their lives more intensely. This, in turn, gives me a renewed appreciation for them, their husbands, their struggles, & indeed the ancient teachings as a whole. It really makes one think about important history.

A great book, written very clearly with a realstic, but also moral perspective. Far superior to "free trade" ideology, the framework presented offers hope for developing nations, and also provides arguments for opposing the current trade agreements Wall Street ans Hollywood are trying to put in place! This one is a must read!

I did not read the entire book, but the sections I read where very helpful in writing my paper. The authors do a great job in being clear and concise and using terminology that is easy to understand.

Easy read, enjoyable and covers all perspectives of trade. I especially liked the views on developing countries and open trade.

I've received the book in good conditions and into the expected time. Also a good price, much better than in Europe.

Stiglitz continues to push, but not too far, the boundaries of the dominant policy straightjacket.So worth a read. particularly, if you want to push the policy framework even further.

The authors state rightly that trade policies should be designed to raise living standards and to integrate developing countries into the world trading system. Global poverty (more than 2 billion people live on less than a dollar a day) is the world's most pressing problem.They say rightly that the developed countries have to date received the lion's share of the benefits from previous trade negotiations. Those ought to do more for the developing countries. The adage should be `help-my-neighbor', nor `beggar-my neighbor'. Right should persevere over might.Therefore they want to put a radical new trade model on the table of the Doha Round: the Market Access Proposal (MAP). Their model is simple and straight:All developing countries can have free access to all markets with (1) a larger GDP (Gross Domestic Product) and (2) a larger GDP per capita.Besides MAP, they give also recommendations for the upcoming trade negotiations, of which many will be extremely difficult to realize, even partly: liberation of labor markets and unskilled services, promotion of labor mobility (immigration), elimination of agricultural subsidies, no technical provisions (like rules of origin), no export subsidies, no tariffs, no non-tariff barriers (dumping duties), no currency exchange manipulations, no arms sales, no briberies, pro-generic drug policies, elimination of secret bank accounts.They also want better access to financial means for developing countries, institutional reforms (a less costly accession mechanism) and a new international trade tribunal.By the way, trade negotiations should be about trade, not about intellectual property rights.Generally, they ask for more democratic media, which are actually controlled by a few rich conglomerates.Any trade agreement that differentially hurts developing countries more or benefits the developed countries more should be considered as unfair.J. Stiglitz and A. Charlton have written a most necessary book. The implementation of their simple and radical proposition should constitute a big leap forward for the developing countries and concomitantly for global international trade.This book is a must read for all participants of trade negotiations and for all those interested in the future of mankind.N.B. For a viewpoint of the South I recommend Walden Bello's `Dilemmas of Domination'.

Stiglitz is certainly a critic of the free trade ideology but his arguments are much more intellectually robust than I see from either the economic nationalists like Lou Dobbs or the anti-globalization movement (and those two are distinct among themselves). He doesn't favor developed world protectionism, and actually makes a few strong points against it. However his proposals do respond to some of the claims of the anti-globalization movement even if he doesn't accept their quasi-Marxist outlook in total.Stiglitz favors global trade agreements and infrastructure but he would change the rules. Basically he suggests a regimen where wealthier countries (measured either by GDP in the aggregate or per capita) would give preferential access (i.e. little or no trade barriers) to poorer nations. Thus India would get access to the U.S. market without reciprocating on American products but India would have to give access to Uganda without getting equal treatment in return. The poorer nations would have more leeway to employ subsidies and tariffs and have longer transition periods to liberalization but the long run goal would still be fewer barriers to trade.Stiglitz makes a very strong case that even if one accepts that trade barriers are a bad idea, the developed and less developed nations aren't on a level playing field when it comes to arbitrating trade disputes, simply because of size.He also suggests intellectual property issues and a common set of investment rules should not be part of global trade governance. Those are interesting points of view, certainly intellectual property enforcement is spotty in the third world already. He suggests that if investment agreements are wise for developing countries they will implement them on their own. He gets a little vague on this point because he suggests that labor and environmental standards should be WTO functions if investment rules are, which makes one wonder if really believes investment rules should be in or out. On the flip side, he also thinks allegations of currency manipulation should not be part of the agenda.The dogmatic free traders like Milton Friedman contend there is never any net benefit to protectionism; Stiglitz obviously departs from this point of view in that he selectively endorses it for developing countries. It is hard to argue with much of his logic, I just wonder if the developed world would act as altruistically as he suggests they should. The reluctance of the larger economies to part with farm subsidies is an obvious obstacle, on the other hand what he suggests is already the case in manufactured goods.Stiglitz deserves credit for moving beyond the simplistic and often disingenuous claims from the developed world who are just engaging in rent-seeking behavior. His proposals would involve governments in aiding people who are genuinely less well off rather than coddling inefficient industries in the developed world.

CS, League, Starcraft, and DOTA are all reported on, with a slight emphasis on DOTA 2, particularly towards the end. There are also fascinating insights into the rise of Twitch.tv. If you like eSports even a little bit, you should read this book.

The rise of eSports is a great topic to cover, and Good Luck Have Fun has some good nuggets of information and some fun stories to tell. The author definitely shows his passion for the topic, but unfortunately he also shows that being a fan doesn't make up for being a poor writer.Huge parts of eSports history are being completely ignored, with the European scene absent while the Asian scene is just being brushed over (with a focus on the few Americans as part of that scene), which means that the two largest eSports scenes in the world are barely represented. The long play-by-play descriptions of Dota 2 matches will bore you to death unless you're a big fan of the game itself, and many other games that should have been represented are also absent.A topic such as eSports history would have required a more thorough work of research, and a less biased look. Too bad !

I received this book from my son for a Mother's Day present. He is a player and a fan growing up playing games. I had not been very supportive for his gaming activity. He thought this book could help me understand. The book is well written with detailed descriptions of the people and the history. It took me back to those years when he was playing at home. Frankly, I was clueless on what was going on. My son is now an engineer at Twitch. This book allows me to find interesting topics to stay connected with him.

Good Luck Have Fun: The Rise of eSports, by Roland Li, is a great collection of true stories that delves deep into how many fringe communities in this broad topic have started up very small and thrived to become multi-million dollar companies. This book really speaks to me, as I am a part of a grassroots start up community that ended up becoming a moderate success. Seeing the various stories of now big figure heads in their communities started up from relatively humble beginnings really speaks to me. However, one small issue I have with the writing itself is that when it would sometimes go off on a tangent from a bigger topic, it would stay on that tangent for a relatively long time before going back to the topic at hand. This is a small complaint though, as the book as a whole is a must read for any fan of eSports and anyone who would want inspiration from starting big things from little hobbies. -Andrew Mallach

I am not sure if this allusion to Walt Whitman is valid across cultures and languages, but the stream of consciousness praise of the male body reminded me of his poetry. It is an intriguing work.

More inspirational than he originally thought. Takahashi is apparently proving why we of the Western world consider Asian people of his caliber "ancients".

He is brilliant. This book has been translated into eleven languages. People felt it was necessary that the book be available to the people who speak their tongue.

At first glance, this books looks like another debunking book...someone dismantling a commonly held belief about a specific stance on a faith issue. While Hunt most definitely debunks the rapture, and quite handily, he does it in such a way that is not threatening or belittling. Drawing on his own experience as once being fixated on the rapture and end times studies, Hunt approaches the errancy of the rapture with passion but also compassion. He's been there, so he gets it and confronts one of the biggest hurdles in overcoming faulty, unfaithful theology: pride. But best of all, Hunt does not stop with debunking. He reconstructs something more faithful: a faith practice rooted not in some hope of being sucked up into heaven but faith in God's kingdom breaking into creation in and among us as we live into our kingdom of God identity. This is book isn't written for the smarty pants people with all the fancy degrees (though Hunt has a couple); it's written for the everyday follower of Jesus. His witty, self-deprecating style will make the read feel like conversation with a funny, passionate friend. I recommend this book whole-heartedly.

Well, I'm about halfway through the book and there have been some great nuggets, but I have to admit that I'm let down. He is obviously a former Conservative who is now Liberal in his political views. I don't care where a person leans politically, but what I take issue with is his continued use of his view of politics to make his points when he could easily have made the same points without allowing politics into the book at all! His negative perspective towards Israel and Trump making it into his book have me disappointed. I tend to be more liberal when it comes to religion, but his use of politics in the book are sure to turn off most conservative Christians and they are the ones who need to know this information the most. If you can set aside all the politics in the book the overall point is great and much needed in Christianity.

Not only is the book informative, but it's also fun to read. You don't normally get that with books about theology.

Hilarious, thought provoking, and spot on. Unraptured manages to make you assess and reassess some key ideas about life and end times without being “preachy” or judgmental. Zack does a great job of deadpan to keep you laughing and thinking. It’s the speechless stick guy meme of books.

A smart, funny and humbly written Biblical perspective on the call to share the love of Christ with the least of these instead of living life consumed by a fear of being left behind. Seriously, so good.

This is one reason why i have such hope for the younger generation. When a young minister like #ZackHunt can humble himself as he realises his life has become like a clanging cymbal. When faced with the reality that he and the fundamental Christianity he has espoused is part and parcel to young people leaving the ‘church’ – he does the research and writes a book to help lead the ‘church’ back to where it should have never left. Back to the life of Christ and how he taught us to love. This book is breathtaking. #Unraptured has enraptured my soul. I received an advanced copy and could not would not put it down. This book, to quote another author, literally ‘sparked joy’ in my life at a time when I really needed it.
