This book ended really well but caused me a bit of grief at times. I strongly believe in raising children by Biblical standards, but the author spends a good deal of the book focusing on "how grandma would've raised her children" and not a lot time on Bible principles until the end. I would've expected a lot more Scripture along the way for a book with this title. There are many good points he makes along the way but just because Grandma did it doesn't mean it was right Biblically. He comes off very harsh at times. In the end, I love what he says about good parents are basically good leaders. He made me think along the way but I can't say I agree with him on all points.

AMAZING. Made all the difference with my 2 and 4 year old. I wish I would've bought this book 4 years ago! Every chapter is full of parenting wisdom I've been so desperately trying to find. I've always felt like a frazzled mother but this book has changed everything for me. It teaches you to become a successful Christian leader/mother of your children. Post modern psychological parenting methods have made parenting SO much harder than it has to be and has created a disaster in it's wake.

As I read this I was thinking, "Why didn't I have this book when our child was born?" You certainly don't need to be a Christian to get the good from it. I order copies of this book to give to everyone who's getting married. I tell them, "Don't wait until you have children to read this, it may help preserve your marriage long enough to have children. If so, it will likely save your marriage again afterwards."By the way our local newspaper quit carrying Mr. Rosemond's syndicated column, which is how I first learned of him. This is unfortunate, since one of his columns is worth nearly all the editorial pages with the comics thrown in.

Love this book! With a master's in science I have been fed the majority of the psycho babble lies for my young adult years. This book gave me a better understanding of why these progressive ideas didn't feel right once I started my family. Plain simple biblical advice, the principles I was raised with that gave me a strong work ethic and a love and respect for people and the Lord.

John Rosemond has a no nonsense approach to discipline that is based on biblical principles. His advice is nothing fancy or complicated...just simple rules to follow. He tells parents what they need to hear...advice grandma of yesteryear would have given (advice we have forgotten) . I look forward to reading more of his books.

As a fifty-something parent of three grown children, now raising a six year-old; I have to say that parenting today is a whole different world. The down-to-earth, "Grandma" wisdom (old-school Bible principles) offered in this book is exactly what is needed today. It is a refreshingly clear and simple guide for parents swallowed up in the chaos and confusion of modern parenting. This is good, godly advice.

Wonderful, sound Christian advice for parenting. I wish I had read this when my first was a baby instead of waiting until he was 4. I would highly recommend this to any parent who is constantly questioning their parenting decisions and wondering if they are going to somehow psychologically damage their children if they don't choose the "right" methods of discipline and guidance for their kids. Really, really sound advice that will help you embrace your role as a parent and be confident in the task God gave you - knowing He has equipped you with the skills to lead your children up in the way they should go.

We had had a copy of this book for a number of years and used it in counseling parents in the school with which I was associated. It is a helpful tool in counseling parents.

What really struck a chord with me in this book is that it's a free-verse novel. I feel that Sones' decision to write this novel in verse instead of prose makes it stand out from other young adult novels that might deal with similar characters and situations.Because of the nature of poetry, there was a certain lack of depth to the story. With that in mind, there was also a much deeper depth to the story than what could be found just through reading this as if it were prose. The poems that make up What My Mother Doesn't Know range in what they convey. Some are a full scene in Sophie's day. Others create a full scene with a series of poems, where each might be a bit shorter and focus on one thought. Weaved together in a mixture of lengths and subjects, they create a beautiful patchwork view into who Sophie's character is.I really enjoyed the voice in this books as well. Sophie is a 15-year-old girl who is trying to sort out her heart, deal with an abnormal home-life and even touches on the prejudices of her being Jewish. While I'm not, nor have I ever been, a 15-year-old girl, I found her believable and was able to sympathize with her. At times I wanted to reach into the book and give her a good slap, but she's learning how to go through life and to sort things out for herself.I'm happy that I went along on this little journey with Sophie figuring out what love is, who she really is, and ultimately a journey about growing up for a teen who could represent many teens in one way or another.

"What My Mother Doesn't Know" is a very good and intriguing quick read. The book is written in verse, from the same point of view the entire time. The main character, Sophie, is the narrator; she writes about love, boys, friends, and family. She is going through a tough time at home and deals with break ups, crushes and the struggles of the teenage years. This book is definitely geared towards young women, but is not limited to that. Kids from the age of 13 and up would enjoy and relate to the book. The only downside to this book is that it is so brief that there isn't really a strong plot. Although the plot is weak/not really there, as a teenage girl, I really enjoyed the book. It was very relatable to my life and entertaining to read. It's a great book that you can't put down. I definitely recommend it!!

I was working on my Top Ten Self Published Bestsellers post and came across this little gem, shown as a mover and a shaker. It was originally published in 2003, and I thought I would read the excerpt and see what all the fuss was about. (I think it's because it was because it was on sale for 99 cents.) I bought it right away and read it in just a few hours. It's written in prose or is it poetry (?) style. It's a really cute, clean book for young adults and I'm so glad I read it. The voice is believable and funny. There are a few memorable quotes in the book that made me giggle a little. This book just proves that the heart knows what the brain doesn't always seem to be able to figure out. Even at fifteen! Definitely worth the read.

Sophie's pig of a mother doesn't know anything because she numbs out watching tv and eating chocolate all the time. Sophie could probably say "I gave my boyfriend oral sex last night" and her mother would just grunt.But there isn't really much to hide. Sophie is a "nice Jewish girl." She's adorable. She thinks about sex. Duh!The book is written in free verse. Some reviewers have complained that it isn't great poetry. No, it is a teen girl writing her thoughts in poetry. It isn't supposed to be great poetry.Sophie's mother really angered me. She went into a huge ugly guilt trip because Sophie secretly wore a slinky black dress to a halloween party instead of the stupid dress her mother wanted her to wear. Believe me, any parent whose teenager didn't do anything worse than that should get down on her knees and thank the universe.

I have to admit that I put off reading this book for ages. A YA novel in verse? Blech, right? But the reviews finally convinced me to give this a try, and I'm so glad I did. I have no idea how the author managed to make a book so light, sweet, rich and full all at the same time. The verse isn't pretentious or tedious in the least -- it goes down smooth and easy, making every moment pop bright and clear. And it brought back memories of my first love so vividly it made my heart hurt (in a nice way). I think my only complaint is that the girl on the cover looks nothing like I pictured, and the overall cover design doesn't quite suit the mood of the book. But that, obviously, is just a nit-pick.Amazing!

I prefer poetry that tells a story, like Hiawatha or Canterbury Tales. I enjoy some of Billy Collins free verse, but on average most is unmemorable because as a whole they don't tell a story or have a theme. I only bookmarked 3 of Sones' poems, but as a whole l enjoyed the story. This was good use of free verse, moving the story along by crystalizing one idea and mood at a time, allowing the story to be stopped or started again as easily as a Vonnegut story.Some reviewers complain that the story is inappropriate. I rate it PG 13, not because of any offensive content, but because hitting puberty seems a reasonable prerequisite. If your kids saw Transformers, they've been exposed to worse.I feel I got lucky in 2013 choosing this book for Natl. Poetry Month.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book. The author is super nice in person so I knew I had to give it a chance. I wasn't expecting to much when I started but man Sonya Sones changed that very fast. Such a great book! Sophie can never make up her mind, but it makes for a interesting read. I can't wait to read the next in the series.

I loved this book. It was a great teen novel. The way it was written, in poetic form, made this a very fast read. I devoured it quickly. It was over before I knew it, left me wondering if there was a sequel, which I've yet to find. I highly recommend this book, especially if you're into teen novels, falling in love, or just being real!!

I bought this for my kids. My oldest is nine and his brother is about to turn eight. At first I thought some of the satire might be a bit over their heads. And in some cases, it is. But overall, they love it. They enjoy the humor and the imagination. They laugh and tell us (their parents) about Calvin's antics over and over. They want to play Calvin Ball and make their own snowman house of horrors.I will say, the Kindle version (Only works in the app or on a fire tablet) is stunning. It is easy to navigate and crystal clear. Very well done. Get this for your kids. Let them read and learn to use their imagination. Put that tablet to good use.

Calvin and Hobbes is one of those stories that latches itself upon the imagination. It goes beyond the wit and appearance of the normal comic strip and projects a level of conscientiousness that hasn't been seen since Bill Watterson discontinued the strip in 1995. As an artist, I would say Watterson has probably done more for the arts than most people realize. The Tenth Anniversary Book certainly contains the high-points of one of the greatest artisans of comics and story-telling of the Twentieth Century. Thank you, Mr. Watterson, for one of the greatest pieces of art I have ever observed.

My 10 and 14 year old sons LOVE reading this and another Calvin and Hobbes book that we have every single night before bed. It is so fun to hear their giggles coming from the other room. I remember reading it when I was their age, so I love seeing the joy of these classic comics being passed on to another generation!

Odds are if you are thinking about buying this book then you are a Calvin and Hobbes already. But for those who have not discovered the joy that is Calvin and Hobbes I would encourage you to pick one of these up and enjoy a work that transcends "the funny papers" and could truly be described as art. These stories and characters offer commentary, insight, wit, and quite often elicit emotion from the reader. They have a depth and soul not found in other comic strips.

I love C&H so no hate there.I bought all three (Essential, Indispensable, and Authoritative) for my Kindle-on-iPad. The strips are clear enough and I do enjoy them, but they do not fill the iPad screen and, amazingly, you CANNOT adjust the reader to eliminate the useless letter-boxing on all four sides. I have at least a one inch border on all four sides of the screen, wasting considerable screen space. As a result, the art and fonts are small and unnecessarily difficult to read.I don't regret my purchase and I do love C&H and having it on my Kindle (iPad). But the porting to Kindle was poorly done and detracts from what should and could have been a 5 star experience.

Seriously - how could you NOT love Calvin & Hobbes. My 7 year old is now reading Calvin & Hobbes, and it's the greatest thing ever. He may not get all the humor, but as a boy who has a beloved monkey he connects with Calvin's attachment with Hobbes on a very personal level. For me it's like going back to my high school and college years and rereading a loved cartoon.

I Have Always ♡LOVE♡ *Calvin And Hobbes....And, This Book Has Alot of *Interesting* Comments from The Cartoonist Who Drew Them. It Does Have "Calvin& Hobbes" Cartoons, too-So, that's Good. It's A Different kind of Book, for Sure. But, Definitely Worth *CHECKING OUT*!!!! :-)

Being born in the early 80's I was at a perfect age to go to bed as a young boy reading these great comics. I feel Calvin and Hobbes changed the wayI look at the world, Instead of watching tv all day as a youngster I did the things Calvin did. I dug for treasure in my backyard, I went for wagon rides down steep hills in the woods, I played every day in the snow and made tons of snowmen in front of my dads car.I have come to realize that Calvin and Hobbes is not just a funny comic strip for a quick laugh, its so much more than that. Its looking at the world through different eyes and changing your perspective. Overall Calvin has changed me and I will never be the same.If you have never gone through a Calvin and Hobbes book please do and you will come to love this boy and his tiger.

The Washington Post in its 1983 review of the book said "Conot's 593-page account of Goering, Hess and cronies in the docket is alive with drama and melodrama"; a comment I wholeheartedly agree with. Indeed, it was this aspect of the book that most engaged me as the author really brought the trial and its leading personalities to life.In addition, in order for the reader to understand the crimes of the accused, the author necessarily provided some historical background. To that end, Conot did an extraordinary amount of research. (He told the Washington Post that he read more than 50 million words of material.)However, all this historical background information, for this reader, made the book, at times, seem like another book (a book on the history of the Third Reich) as it was quite lengthy.But don't let my last comment put you off. This is an excellent account of the trial.Sadly (just for reader information) Mr. Conot died at age 82 in Los Angeles in 2012.

This is a thought provoking book as it pertains to how to organize and conduct a trial that involves numerous atrocities, on numerous nationalities, in numerous countries, all to be prosecuted by various allied countries with very different ideas about what is important and how to proceed. My only complaint is that I felt the author strayed a bit more than I cared to read about or need to know, in terms of giving history of the war, which felt redundant, and not specifically trial focused.

I have read many, many accounts of the original IMT from all angles in previous books and articles and seen many documentaries and movies based on the subject. This book was a most thorough account of the event and was able to offer even more previously unknown information surrounding the defendants and the prosecution of the cases against them, as well as a bit of inside information about the key players and "personal" behind-the-scenes reports, which are generally left out of other accounts.I just finished the book recently and can say that I was surprisingly satisfied and somewhat enlightened about a subject that has many miles on it already. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a definite interest in the WW2 era in general and the first International Military Tribunal held in Nuremberg after the war. It is well written and an easy read as well that will keep you reading (not full of unnecessary technical or legal terms, etc).

This is much better that the fictionalized movie on the trials. It names names and gives a slug fest, free-for-all description of the trial.That's not to say that the movie is a dud. I have it too and like it a lot. (There are lots of stars who make long cameo appearances in that movie.)

I read this book in preparation for a presentation on the Nuremberg Trials. It is very well researched and documented. This is real history that reads like unimaginable dystopian fiction. Anybody who has the slightest doubt about the Nazi atrocities should read this book and pay special attention to the photographs. Lest we forget.....

Most of the book detailed the various atrocities that took place during the war that I had hoped not to have to be exposed to again. The rest of the book finally explained the penalties imposed and the actual execution of the top Nazis.Don't read this book prior to going to bed! Well written, though.

SUCH a good book. I'm slowly working on reading it, little by little, and every page is full of interesting information, tidbits and stories about the Trials.

Every student should be required to read and then report on at least one book detailing the Nuremberg Trials. It is the epitome of the application of the Rule of Law and should be required reading for students, teacher and most importantly politicians.

For a very long time, a vague haze of cynicism has ruled over much of media. My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness (MLEL) does not indulge in such, instead portraying pain, loneliness, inexperience, and depression through the lens of honesty and genuinity. MLEL is intensely personal, and as a result reached to a chamber of my heart most stories never come close to. Beyond its personal affect, I have been lucky enough to witness MLEL spread happiness and discussion through the community of women closest to me, with an incredible popularity among fellow lesbians. Its incredible to see how many people were moved by this story so drastically.This is the only book that I have ever set an alarm over a year in advance for. I read an amateur translation sometime in 2016, shortly after discovering that an official english translation would be released. At that point I marked my calendar to ensure that I would have a copy of this incredible, incredible manga.

It's not often I find cute biographies where depression and anxiety aren't framed in a short term, "then I got over it" way. The naked honesty of Kabi Nagata's thoughts and experiences are really refreshing (and more than one time made me tear up with recognition) -- it's a story of bravery and healing as well, but it's so encouraging to to read her aknowledgements that no, even when you try to change your life around there are obstacles, and the struggles might always be there. But that doesn't mean it's useless to try.A cute straightforward art style, and a matter-of-factly attitiude to being lesbian also makes this a great read.

When people are saying this comic is too 'raw' and 'real' they're not kidding. Kabi talks very openly about her life, her depression, anxiety and everything in-between. She doesn't pull any punches or worry about making herself look good. When it comes to auto-bio comics I feel like a good portion of people tend to try and always make themselves look better or always 'right'. Kabi doesn't bother with that pretense and bluntly talks about how her life fell apart and how she managed to claw herself slightly out of the pit of depression. She sure as hell isn't free of it, but she's above where she used to be. For anyone with depression that much is a big accomplishment. She addresses how she screws up as a person in a very open way.Kabi gets directly to the heart of various issues and pulls them apart in a very unique way. The two tone color style is really lovely look at and gives the story an extra push forward. Like we're being invited to read a journal by Kabi herself. The cover having a nipple/nudity could be a turn off for some people, but don't let that stop you from reading this comic. It is definitely worth a look.

Charming illustrations and a hopeful message perfectly offset the very real struggle to overcome mental illness and be true to yourself. It's an important read for anybody, but particularly encouraging for those with anxiety and depression, those who are confused about their sexuality, those who doubt their ability to pursue what they love, and especially those whom are described by all of the above. Whether you need a pick-me-up or want to better understand a loved one who is suffering, it's well worth a read!

My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness is Nagata's personal story about stepping outside of the mold her parents casted for her, discovering herself as well as uncovering her sexuality and learning more about her own body.Likes:- When I purchased this manga, I hadn't read anything about the synopsis of it and I naively believed it to be a Yuri. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that this was the author's own life-story of self-discovery.- One of the topics that gets brought up are the pre-determined ambitions and goals that parents set for their children. While these are generally set for the child's well-being and out of love, the manga does a good job of demonstrating that what parents want for their children isn't always what the children want for themselves.- I admire Nagata for moving outside of her comfort zone to learn more about her body and her sexuality. While we live in a world where sex is used to sell almost everything, it doesn't feel as if exploration of sexuality is something that is really supported. Understanding one's body, and knowing what they like shouldn't be something thats condemned. It should be supported, and celebrated, as a step taken to truly know yourself.- The artwork was cute, and well-done. I always enjoying diving into a manga to see the author's personal drawing style and how they choose to capture their content.Dislikes:- While Nagata was working through anxiety, stress and depression to keep a job, provide an income for herself and measure up to her parents' expectations, it was disheartening that her parents seemed to devalue any small step that she took. They appeared more focused on the ground that she still needed to cover to get towards their end goal for her, as opposed to appreciating the effort that she has put into the process thus far.Overall, this manga is a worthwhile read if you are into learning about another's life-story. There were many relatable aspects to the book which I believe will make it a good read for others that are experiencing the same life-obstacles that the author has. And possibly learn from the ways she was able to work through them.My only regret is that it wasn't longer. But no matter, I have already ordered the sequel.
