No text-to-speech. Luckily the library had the CD set. So I bought the Kindle version to read while the lovely voice of Lisette Lecat narrated the story to me. I think her voice added a taste of the culture to the reading of the story. Even still, I think I might have been just as happy with the robot voice on my Kindle. This is an expensive read for me. It is hard to try and get the whole package from the library on anything. When a part comes in that's what you have to drop other reads so as to get it done on time. I don't do well with just the audio version, I have to immerse myself in a book to finish. And because of all that I just said, this story leaves me not caring if I read any more of these books.The story was of a sing-song feel and I often found myself drifting to sleep or off to other thoughts. The author did capture the love of country and the evils that still exist. It reminded me of reading missionary books at my grandmother's house. I loved seeing a different world than the one I live in. But sad to say the attitudes of men seem universal. I was so disappointed in the ending. I thought we had finally grew a strong self-sufficient woman. Meh!Unless the Kindle and Audible versions of the rest of the series fall into my lap, I will not seek out the rest of the series.Since Amazon won't let me review these books separately, the above was about the first book. The following is the second book, Tears of a Giraffe.***I didn't think I would go on and read the next book. But I saw that my library had the Kindle version AND the audio CDs to go along with it. And as luck would have it I was able to check them out at the same time!I can't tell you how marvelous it is to listen to the narration of Lisette Lecat and her accent. Yes, I could have read the Kindle version without the text-to-speech and no audio version to help me. After all, I did read three chapters before the CDs showed up for me to check out. But that voice brought a reality to the characters of Botswana's No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency.What a beautifully told story! It does stray from my goal of reading books written by females with strong female characters. By the way, that goal is swiftly narrowing down to wanting to read mostly OLDER females. I'm tired of Young Adult books. But, though this is written by a male, I find the older female and her co-characters written so well that I dearly love this series.I hear that it has been made into HBO series. I can understand why. Yet I can't imagine it is as wonderful as these books. How can visual arts capture inner thoughts? But I will watch them and give them a chance.Since I can't afford to buy this series I will have to take it slowly as the library has the copies of Kindle and audio available.

The story is filled with African cultural information that engages members of my Reading Club in productive discussions. Having little knowledge of Africa, they are learning through this medium cultural information that they can relate to some common practices they have experienced in their everyday lives. The humor of the book keeps readers looking for the next minutes. The book is morally strong and provides good examples of integrity, character, selflessness, and a range of other modes of behavior that children of this generation rarely consider. I will be looking for the next book in a few weeks.

Mma Ramotswe, "the accomplished founder of the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" has agreed to marry "Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni, proprietor of Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors", but first there is business to be conducted and mysteries to be solved. Specifically, where is the couple going to live? In Mr J.L.B. Matekoni's house or in Mma Ramotswe's clean cottage? Mma Ramotswe is going to take care of Mr J.L.B Matekoni. Just listen to her tell his maid "A man who is well looked-after becomes fatter. They are just like cattle That is well-known." And what about an engagement ring with a large diamond? First, though, there are the cases Mma Ramotswe has to solve - an American student, missing for ten years from an experimental collective. The mother accepts that he might be dead, but wants to know why. Then there is the butcher with a wife who has suddenly enough money to send the son to an expensive private school. The orphanage just outside the city needs help with the troublesome pump and before he knows it, Mr J.L.B. Matekoni is charged with the care of two orphans without consulting Mma Ramotswe first, Oh, and the promotion of her assistant and .... there is so much information packed into these books. I love McCall Smith's language, descriptions of the country and it's people! The relentless heat comes off the page when reading the description of cars parked so that the least bit of shade wards off the sun, or the Commissioner's Land Rover entrusted to Mr J.L.B. Matekoni, or the university lecturer. Wonderful series!

Alexander McCall Smith never disappoints and "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" is gift that just keeps on giving. I love what I am learning about Africa and the African people. AMS, obviously, loves Africa and its people, especially Botswana. I'd love to sit with Mma Precious Ramotswe and share some Bush tea, some good conversation. She is wise and compassionate. I have a long way to go in the series but that is okay. This means that I can enjoy some good company for quite a while. I would like to invite Alexander McCall Smith to have Bush tea with us too and some fruit cake. The conversation would be so entertaining.I just saw a talk by Alexander McCall Smith at the Washington Library. It took place when Bush was in office. He spoke about "No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" at length and he took questions. I could listen to this man speak forever. I love his speaking voice and I love his laugh. He has a great laugh. I like a good laugh and he has a really good laugh. He is so cute and he has a great sense of humor. I would love to see him in person. I have so many questions for him. I have to look at his schedule to see when he will be in NYC. I'd like to see him. I don't know where this man gets the time to write all of these books, travel and teach at the University too. I am amazed by his energy.

This book made me salivate! Nat Geo + ATK = brilliant! If you love travel and food, you need to add this to your collection! I love the historical / cultural info + recipes for authentic dishes. I have been to / studied in Italy, and I saw some favorite dishes included (like cacio e pepe, etc.).Though I have not cooked anything from the book yet, I have flagged a lot of dishes to try in the next few weeks.I hope this trend will continue - Tasting Mexico, Tasting Spain, Tasting France, etc. Yum!

It's a great book for ideas and brings back many cherished memories from my Italian background. It's nice to learn some of the modern day changes and substitutes of today. Italian cooking is and has been very much a part of my life since I was about 4 years old. I learned about many different dishes my family never made and I find it interesting to know about the different parts of Italy and their ways and varieties of food and preparation. I must say whoever packaged my book did a lousy job because there was some damage to the dust cover and the spine. There was no filler to keep the book from banging around inside the box.

I was so excited when I heard that ATK and National Geographic were joining forces for a cookbook! I have made so many trips to Italy and the pictures are a beautiful and accurate representation of my memories. The recipes are divided by region so that you can get a real feel for the regionality of Italy. And the recipes...well..it is ATK! They are perfect. Really delicious. I have already ordered multiple copies

This is not just a coffee table book or a cookbook. I got Tasting Italy thinking it would be a combination of these things, and was happily surprised by the narrative in each chapter. The authors introduce each of Italy’s 19 regions with a brief lesson in geography and history—both of which directly influence the country’s regional cuisines. There are good sidebars and short pieces about different ingredients (i.e. truffles, Pecorino Romano cheese) and foods (i.e. pesto, polenta) for further insight. I’m a sucker for maps, and the various maps add a lot as well. As the authors write, “The secret to Italian cooking isn’t a particular recipe; it’s the backstory of that recipe: the geography, the agriculture, the history, and the culture of a place and people.”I tried five recipes, and all were well-explained with a good balance of authenticity and practicality. The pasta in walnut sauce was a perfect meal on a rainy, fall day and just as good as I remembered from when I had it in the Cinque Terre. I also made spaghetti with cheese and pepper which was simple and and tasty; the milk-braised pork roast, which took much longer than I thought but still pretty good; and bread salad (panzanella) which might become a new go-to for me. I slightly overcooked the hazelnut cake (proof I am a traveler first and cook second perhaps), but the torta was still a hit with my roommates.Perhaps the best part of making recipes from this book is that it forced me to take the time to cook and savor the food. Nothing like a beautiful book to make sure that my food matched—taking my own food photos was part of the fun.Recipes seem to vary widely in time and skill it takes, so cooks-to-be be warned to read the recipe thoroughly to see if you’re up for it. You can make your own stuffed pasta or throw in some cheese with dried pasta in 20 minutes. The authors would have done well to add in time estimates on the recipes but these unfortunately are not included.Dare I say, Tasting Italy has more meat than a coffee table book, but gorgeous enough for just flipping through on a cold winter’s day and dreaming of the Mediterranean. This is not a comprehensive guide to Italy or a travelogue and doesn’t try to be, but for a country whose history and landscapes are so interwoven with its food, you’d do worse than Tasting Italy to prepare for a trip to Italy. Better yet, bring a little taste of Italy into your own kitchen.I received a free copy of this book via TLC Book Tours in exchange for an honest review.

I was so excited when I saw that Americas Test Kitchen released this book. I have owned previous books from them, but this one is so unique. The recipes are categorized to their specific regions in Italy and the book is full of beautiful photography.

I hesitated at buying this book. At first, I saw the book and its pictures online and thought the pictures looked old (at least online.) But, I bought the book because I love ATK and Italy. This is an incredible book and it is as much a travel guide as it is a great cookbook. I'm only a few chapters in, but in true ATK style, they go into great details as to why you should cook the recipe a certain way and not stray from the recipe. I would advise anyone who is 'contemplating' buying the book to buy it - you will not be disappointed.

I attended a lecture with Jack Bishop [from America's Test Kitchen], and Eugenia Bone [nationally known nature and food writer, and author who wrote essays in this book] and was compelled to buy this book. So glad I did. The photos from National Geographic are stunning [my photos of their pictures do not nearly do them justice]! The history and essays are beautifully written and informative; and the recipes are wonderful and are adapted to what we have available in the States. How refreshing and useful! I've already given one of these as a gift. An interesting story from those involved was that in looking for a cover, there were a number of locations being considered. Whereas normally the food could be superimposed on any beautiful background, National Geographic would hear none of it! That pasta on the cover had to be made fresh and photographed on location. What a wonderful way to spend a rainy afternoon!

This book is perfect for someone going to Italy before they go. We are giving to son and daughter-in-law before they go on their honeymoon in several months. When it came my wife went through it and loves it so much she wants a second copy so she can have one of her own. It is Well written and has fantastic pictures and recipes.

Based on the others two volumes in this serie, I expected a more complete volume, showing perhaps various sport-like costumes and how to draw it, even though it was calling Sex Sport Wear; after all, the other two volumes go beyond the mere "sex" aspect of costumes.So, if you want a lot of short shorts and bikinis, it is ok. If you want a more complete guide to draw sports wear, forget it

Race queen uniforms; cheerleader uniforms; tennis outfits; gym uniforms; leotards.2. The most fundamental, eye-catching active wear: the swimsuit.3. Basic construction and design of eye-catching costumes.While men are briefly included in the swimsuit section, it's the female active wear in this volume that's way more varied & interesting. The overwhelming majority of the many female figures here are kind of small-sized, generic, and without facial features, because the emphasis is on their outfits. And with 240 pages, it's a thicker book than most of the other volumes in this series.As good as these costume guides are, I think I might prefer the slimmer How To Draw Manga Volume 22: Bishoujo Around The World. The figures depicted in it are bigger & visually more varied, even though it has fewer pages. Really, I think all these guides are worth checking out, if you can find a decent price.

Trust me when I say, some of the titles can be very misleading. Fortunately, this book was not misleading at all. This book has what the title suggests, sport wear. In the book, it shows you a variety of sport wear that characters wear in their active lifestyles. Not only does it have sporty wear, but they also managed to sneak in some fantasy style clothing as well as cheerleading outfits in there as well. This book has a good bit of poses that would be very useful, and it shows how the body would look in certain outfits. If you are looking for a book that helps you come up with some cute and sporty ideas for a sport genre manga then this is definately a must buy! Also, there is very, I mean very little nudity in this book, so I would also recommend this book for those who are offended by nudity.

I was a little skeptical when I first saw the cover of this book, not to mention the title of this book. I think they titled it that so men would be drawn to it and buy it. But I must say this book is actually pretty good. It has some really creative ideas when it comes to fashion designs. You can also use the ideas to not only make sports wear, but anything your imagination can come up with. You could design simple bathing suits to active sports wear to even a hero's outfit or even yet a cool space suit. With this book you can even design a fashion that best suites a unique characters personality, that could have nothing to do with sports, the book is fantastically inspiring.The only down fall is its awfully weak when it comes to men's. Not that very many men will have sexy sports wear, but neither the first or second Costume Encyclopedias have much of anything for the men. The whole How To Draw Manga series kind of left in the dark when it comes to men. They have one book for Male Characters and five for Female Characters.Yet, this book is worth buying. But if you don't have the first Costume Encyclopedia, get that one first and skip over the second one.

Waistcoats & Weaponry is the third book in the Finishing School Series. This world is a blend of paranormal, steampunk, and some romance. I love this world so much! It’s like someone sat down and took everything that I love and put it all together. Sophronia has now been at Mademoiselle Geraldine’s Finishing School for Girls of Quality for sit months and it is now time for a review.I am not going to say anything about the plot because I do not want to spoil anything from the previous books. I really love the world that these books live in. No matter how I am feeling these books always make me smile and laugh. They are so wonderful that way.“Oh, Pill, I really would like to help, but we seem to be in the middle of some kind of whose-top-hat-is-the-biggest contest.”As this world blossoms so does these characters. They grow so wonderfully. With each book I find myself liking each one more for different reasons. She grows each character in their own direction and yet they all work as a whole. I am not sure that makes much sense. I have tried to explain that a few different ways over the last few days and I just can’t seem to get the words out. This friend group is true friendship goals.Sophronia learns how to use most amazing intelligencer accessory a bladed fan. Sorry, I had to mention it, and it’s on the cover so not really a spoiler.I so want one!!!

This is the third book in the Finishing School series. Sophronia is enjoying school and has just begun working with a bladed fan, which she believes may become her favorite weapon of choice. Things get serious when Sidheag gets word that there is serious trouble with her pack back in Scotland. The gang form a plan to use a birthday party to get Sidheag back up to Scotland. When things go haywire with the mechanicals at the party, the group makes an escape and hijacks a train which contains a former classmate and now nemesis, working for the vampires. In addition to their mission, Sophronia is also thinking about the contrasts between Sooty and Lord Felix and the possibility of finding a patron to further her career goals. Their mission becomes more complex when they unravel a deadly plot and Sophronia must chose which side she will support.

I haven't read many steampunk books, but the first book in this series, Etiquette & Espionage (Finishing School #1), was a fun read. I enjoyed it more than this one--I missed #2, I see. That was Curtsies & Conspiracies.There are many of the earlier characters, including villains, also devices and new inventions--plus Victorian rules that the characters must adhere to--Sophronia, not so much. There's adventure, fun, mystery, and complicated relationships. The beginning is a bit slow, even though there's usually something happening, and the dialogue is enjoyable.My favorite characters are Sophronia and Bumbersnoot, her mechanimal. if you've read the first book or two, be prepared for changes and plot twists. I am curious as to how the storyline will be resolved. The fourth and last book in the series is Manners & Mutiny, and I want to know what happens next.

The dangers mount in book 3, as all the girls mature. Sophoria as usual is resistant to the budding male-female relationship potential as both Soap and young Lord Mersey are attracted to her, and even Pillman almost ends up engaged when her Mother catches them alone in the garden. In this book everyone's loyalty, values and finally their affiliation are put to the test. This is Steampunk at its best.The 3 books of this YA version predate the Parasol Protectorate and contain several characters that will reappear much more maturely in the next series. Although I have read this backwards, I believe that the most enjoyment would be in starting here and then going into the rest. The YA classification in no way subtracts from adult reading anymore than it did in the Harry Potter series. In fact those who miss HP will find Gail Carriger a witty, fun, well written series that will more than satisfy you. I am hoping for another book in the Finishing School Series as although this concluded well, I am wondering what will be happening to Soap, Lord Mersey, Sophoria and the rest.

Sophronia’s studies in espionage are disturbed when a friend of hers gets a urgent letter from home. Something troubling has happened regarding Sidheag’s werewolf pack and like a true friend and intelligencer Sophronia must do something in the matter.But like always Sophronia manages to get herself and her group of friends tangled in an even bigger scheme that concerns the Picklemen and the vampires.This, like the other books in the series, is a fast paced and fun book. Things are getting more serious and Sophrina must soon chose a side and choose where her heart lies. I’m excited to start reading the last book in this series and find out how this all ends.

Some successful examples of preventive anti-concealment practice are also presented.In the book, the term ‘concealment’ is used to represent the two distinct behaviors uncovered in the investigations: (i) facts and information about an organization and its functioning being hidden from those that need them – here the concealment can be due to various factors, such as complexity and miscommunication, to name but two – and (ii) the conscious and deliberate action of keeping important information secret or misrepresenting it. Dmitry Chernov is a researcher in the Chair of Entrepreneurial Risks at ETH Zurich. He has more than 15 years of experience as a corporate communication consultant in the former Soviet Union Republics, focusing on improving investor and government relations, as well as crisis communication within the following industries: oil and gas, chemical, electric power, metals and mining, telecommunication, transport, etc. He specializes on researching solutions for efficient risk information transmission that enables timely decision-making before and during industrial disasters.Didier Sornette is Professor on the Chair of Entrepreneurial Risks at the ETH Zurich, Director of the Financial Crisis Observatory, Co-founder of the ETH Risk Center and member of the Swiss Finance Institute.  He has received many prizes and honors, among them the 2000 Research McDonnell award and the Risques-Les Echos prize 2002. He is a Fellow of the World Innovation Foundation (2004) and, since 2013, of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. With this study Dmitry Chernov and Didier Sornette provide a great contribution for the understanding of man-made disasters. For this purpose, they didn’t choose a theoretic framework, but mainly an in-depth analysis of selected case studies of the last decades. These disasters cover a broad range of fields, starting from industry, stepping to the financial sector, politics, medical care and ending up with retail as well as the consumer-oriented production industry. In an impressive and very well written way, they give insights, how relatively small initial mistakes or accidents may lead to disastrous consequences for directly, but also for just accidentally concerned persons. Not the primary cause as such leads to the huge loss of lives and/or values, but mainly the misbehavior of responsible persons. Similar patterns of misbehavior may be identified everywhere, independently from the concrete case. They show clearly that information concealment may be the result of manifold influences and contexts. It can be understood as the result of underlying severe general shortcomings in the interaction between the actors as well as of the organization. They are strongly related to personal or cultural aversion against failures and a strictly short-term or profit-oriented management context. Therefore, the entire chapter 3 may even be considered also as guideline for good management!

This is a great account of disasters. It gives a good account of what happened, a good account of the problems that lead to the final result and a useful summary with lessons at the end. It is not too theoretical to be useful.

I've been working within the risk management industry for a decade and read some interesting books about the subject. I can say that this is by far the best book ever about risks. No framework, no ISO, no ISACA, just.....reality.I don't fully accept the theory that all risk are based on uncertainty and this book simply proves that major risks are not usually uncertain conditions.The only uncertainty is when the event will happen. Is like playing a russian roulette with the industry, but there is no uncertainty about it's magnitude or possibility. Just let time and human do their "jobs" and it will happen, sooner or later. I can't reacl the number of times that I've heard the excuse of manager: "I didn't knew", "No one told me about this issue before", "I had no idea that I couldn't do this/that", etc etc.The lack of controls, training, procedures, falsification, negligence, overconfidence, sharing information, also the existence of bad or no information, registry, maintenance etc etc. Uncertainty risk exists? YES they do! But many of the risks we face are not uncertain. They have been hidden by someone and sometimes in plain sight. But the excess of trust or lack of knowledge don't let us see the reality.

Dr. Chernov and Professor Sornette have identified one of the main culprits in major disasters – the concealment of risk information. While this notion has been mentioned in the media for some time – especially following major disasters, the book is a pioneering work which converts media noise (blame games, sensationalism, posturing, etc.) into a solid analytical framework, based on historical lens. It “connects the dots” and allows decision makers to examine their processes and take actions.The book includes a description of dozens of actual disasters, each followed by a thorough analysis and a summary of how the information was concealed from decision makers, governments, and the public, both before, during, and after the disaster. It demonstrated how such lack of transparency may have lead to the disaster in the first place and how it hampered mitigation efforts, causing unnecessary bad outcomes.The richness of the examples brings the book to life and provides useful warning and understanding of the underlying processes for decision makers and regulators.

I love this series! You can never have too many copies of your favorite series. I've already reviewed each book in this series separately, and own the hard copies of this series, but wanted to also own the paper back versions. While I love the box set, the only compliant I have is that the books are smaller than I was excepting them to be. They're smaller than a standard paperback. I'd still recommend this box set for fans of the TID series.

Clockwork Princess is the stunning conclusion to Cassandra Clare’s the Infernal Devices trilogy. The pacing of the third book is much brisker than its predecessor and immediately drags you into the plot. There are also significantly more scenes with action in them, which help to break up the scenes that steadily move the story along. As with the previous books, the story is very character-driven and continues to bring further depth to each character’s personality.Will continues to be my favourite focus of any scene with his witty comments and sense of humour. It was nice to see him play off his sister at times, because normally only Tessa can manage Will. Although they have been apart for many years they still have a wonderfully authentic relationship, like how easily she is able to get under his skin. Will and Jem’s parabatai relationship, as it was in the previous books, is so real that you can easily imagine the love they have for one another, the pain each feels when the other is hurt, and how they would do anything for each other.It was nice to see the continued development of characters that we’ve grown to love, as well as the new faces that have joined the familiar at the Institute. The number of important characters does not ever feel overwhelming or confusing, as each has been given the time to become established and grow in the world that Cassandra Clare has created. I love each and every one of the characters because they are not only true but integral to the story as a whole.Despite having read this entire series before and knowing what will happen – it is still so brilliantly written that it elicits myriad emotions throughout. Each character feels real and their lives affect your own. A tear slips down my face as one character experiences unbearable pain, while another comes at the thought of losing a character I’ve grown to love so much. A grin overtakes my face in light of the overwhelmingly happy news. The books that I have grown to love are the ones that speak to you, change you, and will forever stay with you.Clockwork Princess is quite possibly the best series finale that I have read and certainly the best final book in a trilogy. Despite the book causing me to cry, multiple times, I never felt dissatisfied with the conclusion. The story comes to a climactic end, then Cassandra Clare takes the final chapter to pull everything together and the epilogue to make me cry again. I loved re-reading this series so much and hope that you are inspired to read it as well.

My thoughts are really all over the map as I have just finished this book and though it took me quite a long time to finish it, simply because I couldn't get my head back in the game of reading, it turned out to really envelope me emotionally. I literally cried through chapter 23 and the Epilogue. I also found it to be quite satisfying as the ending of the trilogy. Bittersweet feelings for sure as with any trilogy that the story is "over". As I try to keep my reviews spoiler free, let me just say I was pleasantly surprised by my overall feeling of the book upon completion. In the beginning having such a hard time getting into the book I thought "oh boy, I have to read nearly 600 pages on something I'm just viewing as average..." However that really was my own attitude and not in any way an indication of the book itself because after about 100 pages (which is only through chapter 5 mind you) I was hooked. I was down for about a month, maybe more, in a reading slump and the timing just wasn't right for me to pick this one up at the start but I'm super glad I came back to it and finished it. I would have missed out greatly had I not read the ending to a great story. The conclusion left me very satisfied.Now to the good stuff...and be prepared for quotes because the entire book had a lot of great ones that I absolutely must add in my review.Aw...Jem...and Will....these 2 guys have got to be at the top of my favorite male leads in a book list. I can't pick just one as a favorite, though I know many are huge fans of Will, but I can't pick between them (much like Tessa). From their incredibly loyal and deeply connected friendship to their undying love of the same woman, they are what puts the "awe" in "awesome". The relationship between these guys is more than just friendship and more than brotherhood. Honestly I'm not so sure we have any relationship in life that even comes close to the parabatai relationship. At its core is the principal of undying love and sacrifice and devotion."Jem has always given me exactly what I needed in the way I needed it, even when I did not know myself what I required." (Will)Tessa loves Jem and at the end of book 2, Clockwork Prince, she has agreed to marry him. It's not pity that she feels for him, though he is dying, but it's admiration mixed with love. But her heart is torn because she also deeply loves Will. Is it possible to have this kind of deep love for two people at the same time though? That is a question she battles with."A heart divided against itself cannot stand, as they say. You love them both, and it tears you apart." (Magnus)"It was a near incomprehensible tangle, the three of them, but there was one certainty, and that was that there was no lack of love between them."There are many stories being told in this one book, well this whole trilogy really. Aside from the main characters Jem, Will and Tessa, this book also wraps up nicely the stories of Gabriel, Gideon, Cecily, Sophie, Charlotte and Henry. All of the side cast characters are ones that the reader grows attached to through the trilogy, of which I was quite fond of all of them. I would have been disappointed had their story lines not had some closure as well.At the heart this is a story of love. Love of fellow shadowhunters, love of friendship, love of brotherhood, love of soul mates, love of family. I love the book series, I've read them twice, working on a third time. The reason why I bought the soft cover set is because I wanted the binding art. The covers have a matte feel to them, they are not glossy and the print quality is nice. I also have the mortal instruments set, and they are glossy, and compared to the mortal instruments set, the infernal devices books are taller. Overall the quality is better compared to tmi. Also, it comes in a box, unlike the other series.
