Bob Fu wanted to help his desperately poor family and village and was a top student. He became a student leader in college, desiring for a career to make money for his family. He saw corruption everywhere and then worked for Tiananmen Square protests. He was devastated with the results. When under "college house" arrest and not wanting to live, he was given the book about Xi Zizhi, who had tried every philosophy and religion and finally turned to Jesus. Reading that book was the turning point for Bob Fu as he saw Truth, and he became a changed man, wanting to live, willing to have nothing and take on a "double identity" in order to share his faith. He taught classes for communist leaders in the day while he shared his faith at night. The government was threatened by his faith and he ended up in prison. He and his family escaped. But his story doesn't end there as even now in 2013, he is dedicated to help others who are tortured and imprisoned in China. Much goes on behind closed doors that seem like a horror movie but are real even today. This book stirred my heart and opened my eyes in a huge way.

God’s Double Agent: The True Story of a Chinese Christian’s Fight for Freedom by Bob Fu and Nancy French is a fascinating look into the plight of Chinese Christians today.Bob Fu narrates his story, from wanting political freedom, to his participation and escape from Tiananmen Square, to finding the Lord Jesus as His personal Savior. He describes his humble hometown, his schooling, and his dreams. “Bob” (actually Xiqiu) opens the curtains on what it’s like to live, study, and love in China. He helps us understand sanctioned churches, the house church movement, and exactly what it takes to be openly Christian.Bob himself spent several months in a Chinese prison for his faith. Many more have spent much more time there. This book brings them to life.Bob describes almost incredible escapes—and his role in them.He founded ChinaAid, which provides training, financial support and legal defense for persecuted Christians in China. Bob shares some of their stories. This book fascinated me for several reasons: it helped me understand the opposition that Christians face on a daily basis in Communist China. It is not a pretty picture. They are under constant surveillance. They are opposed in their studies, lied about, tortured, and beaten. If one person in a family is a Christian, the authorities go after all the family—even if they are not Christians and don’t know anything. What hit me the most was that this is current. We’re not reading about what took place many decades ago. We’re reading about events that happened after the year 2000.God’s Double Agent was an incredibly interesting read. I gained a new appreciation for the endurance of the persecuted church and its dedication to Christ. It gave me a new understanding about fledgling Chinese churches and their need for Bible training in doctrine and practice. It gave me more of a burden for China and other countries where Christianity is discouraged. It is very well written and chock full of adventure.I highly recommend this book to teens and adults.

Bob Fu, Chinese, born during the "Great Leap Forward" by Mao, tells the incredible story of his life, from begging for food, to graduation from college and law school. He attended the Tienemin Square student uprising as a young college student, protesting the rights of teachers and students. But his spiritual life is the true story. Having never heard of God or Jesus, he is given a book which transforms his life as he accepts JesusChrist as his Lord and Savior. He is totally changed and becomes an evangelist at great risk. After being imprisoned for his beliefs, he marries Heidi, his sweetheart. When she becomes pregnant without permission from the government, they realize they must flee for their lives or the government would force an abortion.Their escape is a miracle in itself. Many miracles, and answers to prayer guide them first to Thailand, then Hong Kong where their child is born.Bob is today living with his family in Midland, Texas where he heads CHINA AID, a non-profit organization which works in China rescuing and providing legal representation for Christians of all ages and walks of life whose lives are in danger. He met personally with President George Bush, who has supported his efforts. This book is almost impossible to put down and a perfect read for a book club.

If all we had was our thoroughly left slanted media, we would have an extremely poverty stricken & twisted view of Mainland China. I just finished reading the story of a Vietnamese girl (Mai) who was converted in Hong Kong and after waiting for five years for her visa to migrate to the US or Australia, the Lord Himself changed her direction and she returned to Vietnam to preach the Gospel. All of this to say, how similar are the tactics of the Chinese and Vietnamese authorities when either one are determined to bread their Christian "victims." I was kept on the edge of my seat, as I read of Bob's and Heidi's narrow escapes and then all over again, as Bob returned to China or to places where China's agents could have captured him as he was seeking to bring others to freedom. I thought that the Vietnamese definition of religious freedom was very interesting, "'we keep religious freedom in a box' and we let our people worship any way they want to as long as it is where and how we approve." This was not word for word but it communicates the idea pretty well. I think the Chinese would agree with that definition.
