Like many people, my knowledge of West Africa is painfully limited. The landscape, the villages, the people, the culture, the history, all these have escaped my attention. When I first held this book, the “Villages of West Africa,” in my hands, I was mystified. I expected it to portray a monochromatic, desert-swept land, with people burdened by poverty. But something about the cover captured my curiosity: a woman in a multi-colored dress was gracefully climbing steps that seemed to pour out of the earth like a sculpture. As I began to read through the book, my knowledge of West Africa became increasingly enriched. I say reading, but the use of that term is a disservice here. This is not a book that one reads - it is not a history book or a dissertation on indigenous architecture. Rather, it is an intimate journey through the villages and landscape of West Africa, told with just the right amount of prose to provide context on each leg of the journey, followed by page after page of stunning, engaging photographs.I was surprised at every turn. The architecture in these cultures is neither desultory nor bland. It is thoughtfully conceived and unlike anything that I had ever seen. It seemed to spring from the soil to create a community as naturally as stones create a landscape. The photographs of the people capture their dignity, both as individuals and as part of the community. Markets are thriving with activity. Eyes sparkle and children play. The clothing is colorful and bright. Everywhere there is color and light and movement. In short, where I expected scarcity, there was plenitude. The photographs are full-page; often two pages, and exquisitely reproduced by the publisher. Most of the photos are in color and they are vivid. The black and white images are ethereal. The writings in this book are not stiff, academic descriptions. Rather, the authors write in a style that is both difficult to describe and a joy to read: it is both informative and poetic. Factual information about these countries and cultures provides necessary context, yet is admirably succinct. The poetic is in their descriptions of not only what the photographs portray, but also the effect that these cultures and peoples had upon their hearts and souls.A small detail for those who appreciate such things, as I do, are the maps that track the journey of the travelers. The maps are exquisitely drawn, yet perfectly clear and free of superfluous content. They situate the reader to follow along on this journey through the various villages, towns, and countries that make up this region of Africa. This spectacular book is a sublime journey, told in the hundreds of evocative photographs and the sparkling prose by Cathi and Steven House. It has captured the essence of the cultures of West Africa and marked them indelibly in my mind.I think that this book will appeal to architects, ethnographers, anthropologists, artists, photographers, and experts on Africa. But it will also entice anyone who is willing to be taken by the hand on a journey by two supremely gifted people who know the true meaning of exploration.

This stunning book of photography and narrative takes us to places, which many of us may not otherwise visit. Cathi and Steven House are unique in their ability to go into countries and in this case villages, win the trust of the people who live there and photograph their families, their homes, their other structures and the land that surrounds them. A map provides an orientation to this unique journey through villages with unfamiliar names, Timbuktu being the exception. Through these photographs you get a sense of the people and their daily life in each place. The beauty of the people who are so warmly photographed gives you greater empathy for those who must live with the hardship of climate and war in this part of the world. The narrative and photos capture cultural traditions without judgment. Detailed pictures of colorful markets help you understand commerce and quite remarkably how people repurpose materials to serve important functions. Through photos and narrative we understand how the people feed themselves, how they worship, how they create art and how they struggle. The authors see beauty in every place and are able to capture the unique beauty of each place. This book is an art book and a travel book. One which you will return to on quiet afternoons to enjoy the visceral, beautiful photographs, the narrative which gives you history and helps create the sense of place, and moving quotations which give you a window on the authors’ souls. Selected poetry provides velvet touches to this amazing book. The authors talk about the kindness and generosity of the people they encounter on this journey and almost certainly this must be in part because those people respond to the open souls of these travelers.

How fortunate I am that Steven and Cathi House traveled and documented a place in the world where most folks would never have the opportunity to visit. The photos will take your breath away, capturing beautiful tribal populations, adorned with their dress, their artful mud dwellings, and their friendly smiles. Having traveled to Mali in 2012, I am grateful to own this book which brings it all back. The quality of the photography is superb, and the informed commentary will please anyone who wants to understand and admire the mysterious beauty of West Africa.

Through flourishes of poetry and dazzling imagery, this anthology of West African culture is both a mirror and a looking glass, reminding us of our potential by revealing people, places, and stories that we may have never otherwise known. The ruminations illustrated in this book depict lives thoughtfully and poetically lived, cadenced by handcrafted vernacular architecture that is placed with a soulful precision across the West African landscape. Steven and Cathi House have long traveled the world collecting new pieces of themselves and their pedagogy that they find in far and forgotten places, cloaked in shadow, and shimmering just around unknown corners. This book, ‘Villages of West Africa: An Intimate Journey Across Time’, highlights their latest discovery, and places you, the reader, there with them under the tingling warmth of the African sun.

Another outstanding book from Steven and Cathi House. I highly recommend this book to anyone who appreciates beautiful photography, interesting narratives, and learning about places that they will (very likely) never have the opportunity to visit.

Another beautiful House book, this one looks at simple villages in West Africa. Text blends history with love of their subject, indigenous architecture, and includes quotes from well-known thinkers and observers. The photos are stunning...just wish they could be larger. Combines a studious approach with great affection and lush illustration. A treat!
