I found out all at once that I have hip dysplasia and need a hip replacement at 28 years old. It's all very scary to me. I knew NOTHING about the surgery or hip dysplasia for that matter. The book helped me know what's going on better. In ways that made it more scary but that's beside the point.

An excellent book regarding total hip and knee replacements and what can go wrong as well what doctors might be reluctant to explain to patients.While this book is extremely informative, on occasions it worries readers more than it might be needed especially prior to the surgery where patients might be overwhelmingly worried about their pending surgery.

Dr. Grelsamer gives the best advice! It’s like sitting down with your surgeon for a few hours for the conversation your own physician is probably too busy to have. Clearly written and easy to understand , this book should be given to every patient considering surgery.

I found this book to be extremely positive and informative.Although it focuses on the knee and hip, I would recommend it to anyone facing non-emergency surgery.This book does explain in layman's terms the actual proceedures for a knee or hip,however what I found most helpfull was the information on how to prepare for surgery,what to expect the day of surgery such as hospital proceedures, and post surgery.The technicalities of surgeries for other joints are easily obtainable on-line.It was the info mentioned above surrounding the hospital experience that I felt to be the most helpful and enpowering.

With experience and humor Dr. Grelsamer offers us what we need to know to decide about surgery and to prepare for surgery. In my case, total knee replacement surgery. This book is very up to date; the facts don't change. I read it several times before surgery and once afterwards. I have given copies to many friends soon to have, or who will eventually have, total knee replacement surgery. Grelsamer is an excellent surgeon but not one who rushes to surgery.

I bought this book as I am having total knee replacement in a few months. I know that because I had a total hip replacement in September 201l. This book was published a few years ago but I read the whole book and I will say that everything that was described in the section about hip replacement before, during and after the surgery is pretty accurate.

Somewhat dated, better books out there!

This really is just that, a great book. He explains in plain english the information you need to know about your hips and knees. He talks about when to go for surgery and when to avoid it. How to tell if you have a good Dr. and how to find a great Dr.He explains the anatomy and the principles in plain and clear english. He is truly an excellent writer and I cannot more strongly recommend his work.

Still going good, not sure how much can be left in the story. This looks like it may be reaching either an end or a turning point in the very near future. Still enjoying the growth of the main character, although he does seem a little slow to learn. Still think it is a good series, not sure what is next a pretty good read.

This author really brings his characters to life in his writings. The characters continue to evolve as the situations evolve and the craziness they are going through. Fun action packed kicking buttocks enjoyment.

Interesting look at the future universe and everything going on. Nicely developed characters and some neat twists and turns in this book. Looking forward to next book in series.

Another well-written and exciting book in the series but the ending didn't give us much of a clue as to what to expect if another book follows.

Hair raising shindigs, unexpected plot twists, and more craziness from the team as they carve a serious swathe through the galaxy

It is not the most in-depth reading, however, but I am one who prefers to plan out heavy research, rather than stumble on it while I'm outside. It prevails where larger, more precise guides fail by being small and light. While you will get more information with other guides, none are as easy to carry on your person as this one. After all, what good is a field guide that weighs you down in the field?

How many fourth grade science reports have been written out of these little books by Zim? Back in the late 1950s (upper pleistocene to most), every kid worth his dinosaurs had a bunch of these nature guides (I lived with "Mammals;" "Reptiles and Amphibians;" "Rocks, Gems and Minerals;" "Fishes;" and "Insects")."Mammals" is a very handy sized book giving a picture of each U.S. (lower 48) mammal with a painting, short description of habits, reproduction, and range. In the back are found the scientific names (I find this handy as I can never remember them when sitting in front of my computer). Excellent for ages six and up.I considered "Mammals" good enough to order one for my six-foot-two son to put in his pack. Don't leave home without it!

A bit out of date but still gives good, accurate informations on the mammals of North America. I have used this book since I was a kid in New York City and when I moved with my family to the Hudson Valley south of Albany and found it most useful. I wanted a hardcover library edition an it's larger print is nice for my older eyes.

Great bargin, really good resource for quick mammal identification.

I'm currently collecting these Golden Guide nature books for my boy because they are what I grew up with. They are a bit dated but I love the artwork and the information is still quite pertinent. I hope to have the full collection before he turns 4. I just love these books.

Simple, nice illustrations. Would be good for middle schoolers.

Purchased for granddaughter, age 5, and she loves all of these books about nature. I read to her about the things she gets interested in by the pictures.

6 year loves this books. They are a good size for her and with lots of pictures. She uses the book to identify animals in our yard and has surprised me with how well she can find exactly the right animal.

A well written, at times difficult to understand discussion of 4giants of 20th century physics, mathematics and philosophy. A story within a story of General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics and giants working on them. A wonderful read.

Strange that I'm the first person to review this book ...Anyway, the title and book description are misleading. There's very little discussion about what Einstein, Russell, Pauli, and Godel talked about. In fact, there's debate about whether such meetings even took place at all, at least with all four of them present simultaneously.Instead, the book provides somewhat detailed bios of the four of them, as well as shorter bios of other people they interacted with, such as Bohr, Oppenheimer, Wittgenstein, and many others. The book also provides a popular history of the early phase of the development of modern physics (with some tolerable inaccuracies), and its application in the development of the atomic bomb.This is certainly stimulating subject matter, I learned some new things, and the book is generally well researched and well written. But, again, the scope isn't what the title and book description imply, so I feel that there's false advertising going on, hence my deducting two stars.

It is important to reiterate that this book is not what it is described as. I did learn about the development of theoretical physics in the early 20th century, and the personalities involved, but I would not have bought this book if it had been honesty described.I thought the interaction of these minds would be fascinating. This book covers the basics as we teach new personnel in our fire agency. This is the bible we use for fire fighting at the basic functional level. You can delve deeper into some of the topics if desired, but this gives the basic recruit the knowledge and ability/practice to do the job safely and efficiently. Specialize later, but get the basics down first. I always learn something from the classes I teach, and this is the required text for my fire classes.

Book I'm using for FF1 Academy, its nice because I can use the same book for FF2 Academy. Some chapters share material for both FF1/FF2 and are clearly delineated by markers on the page corner (that means when I finish the FF1 material Im not accidently reading FF2 stuff).

This book is essential if you want to learn about fires, fire behavior etc. This is a must if you want to become a firefighter.

The book was required for school and has all the info of course. 6 weeks into the course and we get to chapters 19 and 20 which look like I need 3D glasses to read. The headlines look the worst but the regular print is off just enough that you feel your eyes crossing.

Much bigger book than I thought, however my son can't put it down. This book has everything about firefighting from day 1 to getting hired. Great book!

There is a reason this is considered the "bible" of firefighting. IFSTA has been doing it longer then others and the quality of material shows it. As an instructor I've used and reviewed the other companies out there and I always go back to IFSTA. This book is an excellent choice for those getting into the fire service as well as those in the service looking to brush up. Highly recommend.

About the Author

Octavia Estelle Butler (1947–2006), often referred to as the “grand dame of science fiction,” was born in Pasadena, California, on June 22, 1947. She received an Associate of Arts degree in 1968 from Pasadena City College, and also attended California State University in Los Angeles and the University of California, Los Angeles. Butler was the first science-fiction writer to win a MacArthur Fellowship (“genius” grant). She won the PEN Lifetime Achievement Award and the Nebula and Hugo Awards, among others.  John Jennings co-edited the Eisner Award–winning anthology The Blacker the Ink: Constructions of Black Identity in Comics and Sequential Art. He is professor of media and cultural studies at the University of California at Riverside and was awarded the Nasir Jones Hiphop Fellowship at Harvard’s Hutchins Center for African & African American Research.  Damian Duffy, cartoonist, writer, and comics letterer, is a PhD student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Graduate School of Library and Information Science, and a founder of Eye Trauma Studios (eyetrauma.net). His first published graphic novel, The Hole: Consumer Culture, created with artist John Jennings, was released by Front 40 Press in 2008. Along with Jennings, Duffy has curated several comics art shows, including Other Heroes: African American Comic Book Creators, Characters and Archetypes and Out of Sequence: Underrepresented Voices in American Comics, and published the art book Black Comix: African American Independent Comics Art and Culture. Octavia Butler's Kindred is one of a handful of "must-read" books. The story - of a young woman in 1976 California who is inexplicably transported back in time to 19th century Maryland to (repeatedly) save the life of her distant ancestor - is a powerful commentary on race, how the institution of slavery has impacted America in the present, and asks readers to consider hard, uncomfortable questions about who we as a nation are, who we want to be, and how should we remember and consider the past. I am overjoyed that this work is finally a graphic novel.As with any story that is translated into another medium, there are gems and important plot points that are lost. Among those in _Kindred_ is the inter-racial nature of the protagonist's marriage, and many of the details of how each experiences the 19th century given their race. Sometimes these omissions and editorial decisions get in the way of the story or its impact. In the case of the graphic novel adaptation, there is still plenty of gut-wrenching material and thought-provoking issues raised that the spirit of the story remains true to what Butler wrote.Jenning's artwork cleverly brings Duffy's adaptation to life - the variations of color and shading as well as the illustrations of the characters themselves don't distract from the story, and in many respects add to it (particularly in "The Fight" and the Epilogue). For readers unfamiliar with Butler's work, I cannot recommend _Kindred_ highly enough. For fans of graphic novels (or those who prefer this medium to the source text), the themes, message and plot remain close to the book, with little interference (and some graphic assistance), making this a recommended read.

Duffy is faithful and if anything this adaptation intensifies the impact of Octavia Butler's powerful story. This is NOT a comic book and is possibly too intense for children. However, this graphic novel is an indispensable tool for understanding the horrors of our history.

I’ve been meaning to read Octavia Butler’s Kindred for years, so when I saw that it had just been adapted as a graphic novel I jumped at the opportunity to finally read it while continuing to feed my insatiable appetite for comics. Mind you, I’m not trying to claim that reading this version should serve as a substitute for reading the novel itself. However I do think that illustrating Butler’s story makes it all the more gut-wrenching. Kindred is the tale of a modern African-American woman’s repeated experience of being suddenly transported from her home in 1970s California back to the antebellum South. It’s a very powerful story of courageous survival, both that of Dana, a modern woman forced to adapt to life as a black person in the era of American slavery, as well as the people of the period, whose lives become intimately intertwined with Dana’s. By following Dana through her repeated and increasingly long and dangerous visits to an antebellum plantation in Maryland we form an emotional connection with her that serves to help modern day humans better comprehend the myriad horrors of slavery as well as the strength of those who endured and overcame it. It’s dark fantasy with a vital purpose and I wholeheartedly recommend it.

I've read and listened to this book, but the graphic novel will make this book come alive in your mind. I highly recommend it to all Octavia Butler fans old and new.

Kindred is a story of a black woman, Dana, who on her birthday jumps back in time, to early 1800s. She saves the life of a young boy, Rufus, who is a son of a plantation owner and, surprisingly, her ancestor. She keeps jumping between the modern day and the 1800s, seeing the reality of slavery. It's a story about loss of control: it drills down how completely the slaves' lives were dictated by their owners. It's about being afraid, and also about getting used to bad situation.I'm not completely sold on the drawing style of the comic, but from what I know, it seems to capture the essence of the Octavia E. Butler novel. I still get the feeling that as powerful as the comic is, it's still a barebones version of the original.

Few things encapsulate a time in history such as this. There were no rights, there was no hope and the books states an often overlooked situation, when atrocities become normal. It dulls the rage a person should few. Few stories, movie, books, comic add whatever, have filled me with as much rage, sadness and hope as this.

My international college freshmen thoroughly enjoyed an old classic with a 21st century visual format! Endless important conversation was prompted about diversity in the United States and the history of slavery. It coupled well with a screening of Jordan Peele's Get Out at the start of the semester.
