A well written, at times difficult to understand discussion of 4giants of 20th century physics, mathematics and philosophy. A story within a story of General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics and giants working on them. A wonderful read.
Strange that I'm the first person to review this book ...Anyway, the title and book description are misleading. There's very little discussion about what Einstein, Russell, Pauli, and Godel talked about. In fact, there's debate about whether such meetings even took place at all, at least with all four of them present simultaneously.Instead, the book provides somewhat detailed bios of the four of them, as well as shorter bios of other people they interacted with, such as Bohr, Oppenheimer, Wittgenstein, and many others. The book also provides a popular history of the early phase of the development of modern physics (with some tolerable inaccuracies), and its application in the development of the atomic bomb.This is certainly stimulating subject matter, I learned some new things, and the book is generally well researched and well written. But, again, the scope isn't what the title and book description imply, so I feel that there's false advertising going on, hence my deducting two stars.
It is important to reiterate that this book is not what it is described as. I did learn about the development of theoretical physics in the early 20th century, and the personalities involved, but I would not have bought this book if it had been honesty described.I thought the interaction of these minds would be fascinating. Apparently we'll never know.The Audible blurb states "...Albert Einstein invited three close friends - all titans of contemporary science and philosophy - to his home at 112 Mercer Street in Princeton, New Jersey, to discuss what they loved best: science and philosophy." It neglects to mention that they are not described in the actual book.The publisher's summary says "Using these historic meetings as his launching pad..." Launching pad is kind - it implies the book spent some time on that subject before heading elsewhere - not true.The book tells us that these meetings may or may not have occurred, and goes on to talk about the author's real agenda, which is not about any interaction between the characters in Princeton. All well and good, except I would not have bought that book if I had known what it was really about.While literary quality may be somewhat subjective, a description of a book's actual content is not Audible is obligated to correctly describe what this book is about so readers know what they are getting.
I noticed this book in the book store and the cover looked familiar. I already have it and the title of mine is "112 Mercer Street " by Burton Feldman and completed by Katherine Williams and published in 2007. What gives?The book is so-so
