Cute book!

Added a little irish Brogue to the reading and the 2 1/2 year old wanted to read it over and over. ABCs were already a big deal so this fit perfect.

Perfect fro the classroom for march

A nice alphabet book of Ireland. The words chosen for each letter are just what I would have picked. Nice

This book was awesome. It explains the true meaning of Saint Patrick's Day with every letter of the alphabet. It has great illustrations. So many people have no clue what this holiday is except for the fact they wear green. The students really enjoyed it. Thank you.

we read to Church School 2 year olds and they loved the book!!

This book was not appropriate for my 3-5 yrs too many words for them to stay attentive and interested. This would be a perfect book for first graders and older.

Beautiful illustrations .Too many religious references for our taste.

I love the short game in golf. There's no question that striking a full shot is satisfying and momentarily rewarding, but quite frankly there's a certain sameness to it that fails to hold interest very long. The short game, though, is predicated on variety. Chips, pitches, bunker blasts, bump-and-runs, digging a ball out of the collar of rough a dozen feet from the pin--every shot is different, every shot makes you think, and every shot really, really counts. And then there is putting, which is the most nerve-wracking of all.In The Unstoppable Golfer, Dr. Bob Rotella, golf psychologist to stars like Keegan Bradley, Padraig Harrington, and Darren Clarke, says, "...nearly all golfers have the physical ability required to pitch the ball, to chip it, to putt it. If we're not doing those things, It's because we're somehow stopping ourselves." In other words, we get in our own way.Rotella says it's often fear that crowds our minds, pushing and shoving its way and calling out for negative images, contradictory swing thoughts, and herky-jerky responses. The solution? To achieve a state of calm by focusing on one thing: the hole.He couldn't be more right, of course. If you focus on your target, visualize the ball getting there, and commit to a play based on belief in its success, you're more than half-way to a great short game. Rotella fills the book with stories of his students (patients?) who learned to quiet their minds and let their instincts lead them to better golf. He covers no swing mechanics, but does break down how your mind should work when faced with typical short game situations like pitch shots over hazards, getting up and down from a bunker, and lining up long putts to go in rather than just lag close. He has a special section on the "yips" in which he discounts the theory that there's some physical cause behind them but offers instead a solid, results-proven method to mentally overcome them. The short game is the scoring game, according to nearly every golf guru I've ever talked to. You can drive the ball 340 yards, but if you can't get it in the hole, you can't put birdies and pars on your scorecard. Dr. Bob's book will help.

This book has changed my golf experience. I am an average golfer, a terrible putter, okay short game and inconsistent ball striker. In my 50's and a 12 handicapper, in just 2 weeks after reading and practicing broke 80 for first time at my new country club. I triple bogeyed the first hole, didn't let it bother me and went on to shoot 77. With several birdies and a chip in eagle on a Par 5. So Fun!This book improved my putting the first day. So simple and the short game improved too, so quickly, just amazing. Dr. Bob has such a interesting message that anyone will be able to relate to and react. Now when I read all the articles in the golf magazines it makes me laugh. If you are looking for someone to get technical on how to grip, swing, turn your body, follow through, in other words learn how to play golf find another book. There are hundreds of them. But if you want to streamline your game, get rid of the garbage, change your philosophy on golf, simplify your attitude on your round, buy this book immediately! Your enjoyment of the Game will improve, your scores will too. To focus on what is important while you play and release the garbage that kills your game, read this ASAP. Don't waste money on equipment trying to buy a game, spend a couple of bucks and learn to enjoy playing the game and you will improve too.

I can't call it a "short game bible" because it only addresses the mental side of the short game. That being said, I just finished the book for the second or third time and I always get something new from it. And each time I read it my putting and short game improve. The book is an easy and enjoyable read

I liked this book for many reasons. It talks mainly about golf but relates to all sports. We always seem to get in our own way when we play. We worry about this or that. We let fear creep into our heads. We think about all the negative things that could happen. We all do it. This book gives you tools to beat back the fears, worry, and negative thinking. This book will not help you with the physical side of golf but rather help you get your mind right so you can play to your abilities.

Fantastic!

A great read! Play unconscious golf by clearing your mind of clutter, distractions, etc., and swing!Bob Rotella's knowledge of sports psychology supported by examples of his work with golfers at all levels makes his advice worth following.

For the average golfer, a real eye opening if, a big if, you really try tofollow what Mr. Rotella is advocating. I am a golfer, obviously, and I hadan immediate improvement in my game by changing my mental outlook and tryingto avoid physical swing thoughts. Great book for golfers that want to improve their game.

If you have followed golf in the United States at all, the name, Bob Rotella, should be familiar. He has helped many golfers with the mental approach to this most humbling game. I am a life long golfer, still questing a better game, and, like many, continue taking lessons that focus on the full swing. Dr. Rotella's thesis, changing one's priority to the short game, is a refreshing change. He makes the case, with ample examples from his stable of both well known golfers and hackers, that a better short game leads to better scores. Now that may seem obvious, but his twist is that KNOWING you have a reliable short game frees you from the self imposed pressure and anxiety to execute 'perfect' full shots. Since the best professionals do not hit more than 13 of 18 greens, and still break par, it follows that their short game is the foundation for lower scores. He illustrates his point with clear examples of before and after performances when golfers increased their confidence and proficiency in the short game.I know which area of practice I will now focus more on. Thanks, Bob

A worldview in general is-how we make sense of the world as it is.Where did we come from? How should we live? What happens when we die? How we answer questions like this will help to reveal our worldview. The author gives this definition of worldview p.7 "...a worldview is a well reasoned framework of beliefs and convictions that gives a true and unified perspective on the meaning of human existence."What we really believe in the core of our being determines how we live-whether we have clearly thought through it(or can clearly express it)or not. Mr.Ryken writes p.8 "Even people who say they do not believe in God have ultimate commitments ...whatever is ultimate for us shapes our total identity."Why is it important for Christians to have and live out a Biblically based Christian worldview?Philip Graham Ryken believes that the Church will fail to have a transforming influence on their culture where this is lacking.God has revealed Himself ,and who we are in relation to Him and the world He has created. He quotes Francis Schaffer writing about God's revealed truth p.15"...truth about reality, not just about religious things.Biblical Christianity is truth concerning total reality."-In order to understand and make sense out of the world in which we live,we must know the God who has made it and what He has revealed about Himself and His creation.Without that we only have our vain and futile imaginations(and those of our fellow creatures)to try and sort out what is really important and how to live in the light of that. Some wrongly think that the Bible is our guide only in religious matters but the Word of God is to light our way in all things ,in this dark and sinful world. Those whose worldview leave out God must ultimately lead to despair and a life that has no meaning or purpose(or whose meaning and purpose terminate in this short life). The author writes p.18" we did not make ourselves ,and thus we cannot define our own identity." As much as the carnal man wants to shake off his creature hood and define who he is(apart from God)all such attempts will end in futility and those who do so will not escape the judgment of God for such wickedness(unless they ultimately submit to God's revealed truth about who He is, and the only way of escape that He has provided for fallen sinful men). The doctrine of creation is an important and foundational truth of Christianity.Evolutionary thought not only strikes at what God has made but attacks the very being and existence of God.Pastor Ryken asserts p.18 "Human beings are not the random result of molecules in motion;we are the crown of creation...". One of the clear evidences that man is the height of God's creation is that he is created in God's image(he is a moral, spiritual, rational and intelligent being).Evolutionary thinking is an expos'e of mans folly and rebellion against the omnipotent creator, sustainer and ruler of all things. It is important to think through what our world and life view is.Is our worldview defined by Biblical parameters? The better we understand the Christian worldview, the more effectively we will be able to interact with those who have a less than Biblical(for professing Christians)or a world and life view that does not accord with reality at all. This booklet by Philip Graham Ryken is an excellent introduction to help one think through what their worldview is and compare to a Christian view of this world.

A very concise synopsis of the concept of the Christian worldview - Creation, Fall, Grace and Glory. Ryken notes that few born-again Christians actually think from a biblically-defined worldview and even fewer teenagers espouse biblical principles in their daily lives and decision-making. This booklet addresses not only the need for a biblical worldview, but also gives a brief description of each element and well as its biblical and historical support. The essence of the book is that life is created, and thus defined, by God and not man. As naturalism continues to invade our schools, far too many followers of Christ are unable to distinguish between the wisdom of man and the truth of God's Word. Ryken does a nice job of addressing each element of the Christian worldview, describing how it shapes the way we should think and how we must also act in accordance to the revealed truth of Scripture. This book would be a great read for those who don't have a good comprehensive understanding of Scripture and how it relates to life, especially those areas where biblical truth and the wisdom of man collide in the culture. Understanding God's original design, the damaging results of the fall, and God's work to redeem His creation which will end in His glory is underappreciated in today's watered-down version of Christianity. This entire series of booklets are a great reminder of the historical Christian faith, grounded in God's Word and centered on Christ.

With endnotes, this booklet is 48-pages long but an excellent introduction to worldview, focusing on the distinction between God and his creation, and the storyline of the Bible (Creation-Fall-Grace-Glory, which is similar to Creation-Fall-Redemption-New Creation). There are plenty of ideas to pursue through the bibliographical notes and suggested reading. Very readable and relevant, easily used in a one-on-one conversation or a seminar. Great way to unpack what it means to live for God's glory as we hope in his promises.

An excellent primer on the Christian faith. I was expecting a thicker book but after having read it, I thought it covered the topic pretty well. Although I would like to keep it, I think it is best shared with others so I am going to give it away.

This book is very similar to Ryken's other book, but is still worth the read as he outlines his four pillars: creation, fall, grace and glory.

The writer is spot on with doctrine of the Bible, the book is easy to read, the message is presented in terms that are understandable.

If you are looking to read a book which teaches the salient points of the Christian Worldview - look no more. Ryken starts by defining the Christian Worldview as, "the comprehensive framework of our basic belief about all things..." The book is realistic in it's approach as to why we need a Christian or Biblical Worldview - "For every ten men in your church, nine will have kids who leave the church, eight will not find their job satisfying, six pay the minimum on their credit card balances, five have a major problem with pornography, four will get divorced, and only one has the biblical worldview."Ryken explains that "God doesn't have a point of view, he has a complete view." The only complete one might I add. The author walks the reader through the fall and explains that "the only way to glorify God completely is to obey him absolutely." He pulls no punches.I especially enjoyed the chapter on the Creation and Cultural mandates. Reminded me of time spent studying under the late Charles Colson. The book ends with a wonderful description of Revelation. Important to understand as "we are living somewhere between the sufferings of the cross and the joy of the empty tomb."Trust me, you will love this short, easy to read book on the Biblical Worldview. Blessings.

From the Back Cover

The tiny island of Run is an insignificant speck in the middle of the Indonesian archipelago, remote, tranquil, and now largely ignored. At the beginning of the seventeenth century, however, Run's harvest of nutmeg turned it into the most lucrative of the Spice Islands, precipitating a fierce and bloody battle between the all-powerful Dutch East India Company and a small band of ragtag British adventures led by the intrepid Nathaniel Courthope. The outcome of the fighting was one of the most spectacular deals in history: Britain ceded Run to Holland but in return was given Manhattan.A brilliant adventure story of unthinkable hardship, savagery, the navigation of uncharted waters, and the exploitation of new worlds, Nathaniel's Nutmeg is a remarkable chapter in the history of the colonial powers.

You should be aware of a couple of things before reading “Nathaniel’s Nutmeg: Or, The True and Incredible Adventures of the Spice Trader Who Changed the Course of History.” First, despite the title, this book has little to do with Nathaniel Courthope and his reputed adventures. In fact, Courthope doesn’t even appear in the narrative until page 202 in chapter 7, and then only as a peripheral character. Chapter 10 concentrates on his four-year ordeal from December 1616 to October 1620 fending off Dutch attempts to physically wrest control of the tiny but valuable nutmeg-producing island Run from the British. Second, Courthope’s purported role in changing the course of history is rather circuitous and certainly debatable. In short, in 1667, the British and Dutch signed the Treaty of Breda, “one of the most significant documents in history,” according to author Giles Milton, which swapped British claims upon Run for the future rights to Manhattan. “In exchanging a tiny island in the East Indies for a much larger one on America’s eastern seaboard, England and Holland had sealed the destiny of New York.”Perhaps a more accurate title for this book would be “Tough Nuts: The East India Companies and the Anglo-Dutch Rivalry for Control of the Spice Trade.” It is difficult to exaggerate the value and influence of the spice trade to Western Europe in the early seventeenth century. Clove, mace and especially nutmeg are finicky plants. They grow naturally in only a few places on earth. Four hundred years ago nutmeg was only found on a few tiny islands between present-day Indonesia and Australia, an archipelago so minuscule that they don’t appear on large modern maps of the region. The most bountiful natural forest of nutmeg plants grew on Run, an island just two-miles long and half-a-mile wide. It was once, yard-for-yard, the most valuable piece of real estate in the world. “Run was the most talked about island in the world,” according to Miles, “a place of such fabulous wealth that Eldorado’s gilded riches seemed tawdry by comparison.”Why? Because all sorts of fabulous (and clearly fraudulent) attributes had been ascribed to the nut, including the ability to ward off the dreaded plague. “Nutmeg … was the most coveted luxury in seventeenth-century Europe, a spice held to have such powerful medicinal properties that men would risk their lives to acquire it.” Indeed, in the early 1600s nutmegs were rarer and more valuable than gold or diamonds. A spirited and violent contest erupted between the Dutch and the British for access to – and ultimately unabridged control over – the islands that produced this invaluable commodity.Milton tells the story of this rivalry almost exclusively from the British perspective. Both nations chartered an “East India Company” (London in 1600, Amsterdam in 1602) possessing the exclusive right to trade with the Spice Islands. Each regarded the claims of the other as invalid. Swashbuckling merchant captains – British and Dutch alike – raided native villages, burned down rival warehouses, bribed local chieftains, plundered spice-laden cargo ships, and unilaterally claimed sovereignty over nutmeg-producing islands. It was all quite a messy business, to say the least. Trade missions to the East Indies were known for their squalor and mortal danger. It was fully expected that half of the crew would be killed during the expedition, while the other half could expect to return barely clinging to life. But for many, it was all worth the risk. The riches to be had in the event of a successful trip were incredible. The markup on nutmeg prices between Run and London could be over 60,000%. An illiterate sailor could return with a small pouch of nuts and literally retire on the proceeds. The war for control over the Spice Islands raged for decades, with the Dutch emerging more-or-less victorious. From their regional headquarters at Bantam, a port city 50 miles west of modern-day Jakarta, the Dutch East India Company dominated the major plantations in the region, including the nutmeg-producing Banda Islands, having ambushed and killed the heroic Nathaniel Courthope to take control of Run in 1620.The aggressiveness of the Dutch would prove to be, in the end, a little too aggressive. In 1623, on the clove-producing island of Amboyna, the Dutch commander reacted violently to a rumor (false, as it turned out) that the small cadre of English traders on the island were plotting to seize the local stronghold of the Dutch East India Company, Fort Victoria. All eighteen Englishmen on the island were arrested, tortured and eventually executed, some by having their arms and legs blown off with gunpowder. Understandably, this caused an uproar in England. “There was only one possible way for the Dutch to atone for the Amboyna Massacre,” Milton writes, “and that was to hand back the tiny island of Run.” (It seems to me there were many other ways for the Dutch to atone for the incident!)The British and Dutch East India Companies eventually learned to “play nice” with one another. By the end of the seventeenth century, the Spice Islands had lost much of their value after the British had successfully developed spice farms on Sri Lanka and Singapore. The wooded island at New York would prove to be a much better long-term investment than Run.

Milton definitely did his homework and researched the book very well. It is quite interesting in places and there are even some tense moments that keep you reading. However, it does get a little redundant here and there as innumerable ships go back and forth between Europe and these particular "spice islands," in this case mostly in a mad, violent dash for mastery over an area that yielded primarily nutmeg, cloves and such. I think we probably raise the bar too high these days, demanding from writers only the most tense, intriguing, and mystifying history tomes. So I'm probably expecting too much from Milton by my mild dissatisfaction. For what it is, the book is quite interesting and well researched.

Finely written and as the subtitle says, incredible but true. These long forgotten facts about the fervor of colonization and the madness accompanying the nutmeg trade, the panic to grab up all the spice islands because spices in the 1600s were more valuable than gold, literally, not figuratively, grab hold of the reader and won't let him go until the end.

It could have been anybody's Nutmeg, Choosing Nathaniel (who didn't show up till two thirds in the book)was as good as choice as any. What I liked was a well told tale of the history of those timesand revealing stories of the MANY players named in this book..

This book gives an excellent, albeit summary, account of the incredible spice trade that existed in the 16th and 17th century. At the heart of the conflict were two major combatants, England and Holland. At stake was the richest trade in the world, the exotic spices that came from the tiny, primal islands below China and India - the "spiceries" as they were called. This tiny collection of exotic islands, inhabited by stone-age cultures and lush forests, became the grand prize of the day, offering nearly unbelievable riches and a horrifying catalogue of dangers. Nearly all the grand exploration of the time had as its primary goal the discovery of faster routes to these islands, and countries seemed in a nearly constant state of war over them. The author does a good job of describing this long-ago world. He also is good at describing the kind of near hysteria that gripped kings and queens of the day. Literally, the control of these islands, and the trade routes, could bring a country to global dominance. Countries and men leapt at the chance to go there, despite the fact that life expectancy for European's established in these outposts was short (most died very quickly of dysentery or malaria), and the chances of surviving the ocean voyage in the first place was not good.Eventually, Holland won the contest. Brutal ruthlessness was the key to success. While no country proved deficient in these qualities, Holland, through the Dutch East Indian Spice Company, relentlessly and without a trace of mercy showed the severest hand. They were no slouches in the slave trade, either.A very engaging account - brief but very well researched. I recommend it.

Loved the book. Read it daily.

Much needed in your arsenal in understanding our native languages.

An incredible overview of the linguistic evidence for Nahuatl influence in the culture of New Mexico and Southern Colorado. MUST READ!!!

Excellent writing, very clear explanation of what has been misunderstood and misinterpreted in Mexica culture. I recommend this book highly!!

New Mexican Spanish does indeed exhibit many archaisms of old Castilian, so the claim that it is a "pervasive myth" is wrong. Go to any of the Hispanic villages on the high road to Taos and listen to the old timer's speak Spanish. The isolation of New Mexico did preserve elements of the old language. That being said, there was Tlaxcaltecan colonies throughout Northern Mexico i.e. Nuevo Leon, Chihuahua, Durango and Zacatecas who accompanied the Spanish. They had been staunch allies of the Spanish since Cortes and had been in the Southwest since Marcos de Niza and Coronado ( Coronado's force was composed principally of central Mexicans, not Spanish) The ancestor of the chile verde largo (Hatch) and Chimayo chile was most likely brought by them from central Mexico and diffused out from their colony in Analco ("other side of the river") in Santa Fe. That is just one example of the hardware that was brought by the Native Mexicans and left its mark. Their software - the Nahuatl language also heavily influenced this old form of Castilian to produce New Mexican Spanish we have today so I am glad this is being written about.

Kurly's Totacho debunks the myth of how "non-native" New Mexicans are Spanish, but in fact are Mexicans by their native ancestry of Nahua/Tlaxcalteca (Tlaxcala) descedent. He points out the evidence linguistically with New Mexican Spanish which eventually becomes obvious when you point out the Nahuatl words. The book consist of an intro, glossary and conclusion.A short and easy to read book that could be read in one sitting, but will be returned to review it in the future.

This is a great resource. My family descends from New Mexico and I've always wondered about how our culture came to be. This book provides a lot of answers.

Death in a Prairie House: Frank Lloyd Wright and the Taliesin Murders

Review

"Death in a Prairie House is a compelling argument in support of the theory that the Taliesin tragedy profoundly affected not only the future lives of those directly involved (not the least of whom was considered to be the most influential and gifted architect of the time), but likely, the whole course and development of modern architecture."—Craig Jacobsen, Taliesin Preservation, Inc."The thoroughness of Drennan's research combined with the clarity of his logic and writing style paints a complete, colorful picture of the tragedy. He painstakingly addresses all of the questions and theories that have puzzled many for more than ninety years."—Carla Lind, author of The Wright Style: Re-Creating the Spirit of Frank Lloyd Wright and Lost Wright"A fascinating, insightful examination of a Wisconsin 'crime of the century,' a bizarre and tragic event that changed Wright's life, his career, and perhaps even American residential and architectural design.”—Bill Christofferson, journalist and author of The Man from Clear Lake

Book Description

The most pivotal and yet least understood event of Frank Lloyd Wright’s celebrated life involves the brutal murders in 1914 of seven adults and children dear to the architect and the destruction by fire of Taliesin, his landmark residence, near Spring Green, Wisconsin. Unaccountably, the details of that shocking crime have been largely ignored by Wright’s legion of biographers—a historical and cultural gap that is finally addressed in William Drennan’s exhaustively researched Death in a Prairie House: Frank Lloyd Wright and the Taliesin Murders.     In response to the scandal generated by his open affair with the proto-feminist and free love advocate Mamah Borthwick Cheney, Wright had begun to build Taliesin as a refuge and "love cottage" for himself and his mistress (both married at the time to others).      Conceived as the apotheosis of Wright’s prairie house style, the original Taliesin would stand in all its isolated glory for only a few months before the bloody slayings that rocked the nation and reduced the structure itself to a smoking hull.     Supplying both a gripping mystery story and an authoritative portrait of the artist as a young man, Drennan wades through the myths surrounding Wright and the massacre, casting fresh light on the formulation of Wright’s architectural ideology and the cataclysmic effects that the Taliesin murders exerted on the fabled architect and on his subsequent designs.

This was the most complete of several books I read on Frank Lloyd Wright. Although its title suggests that it will focus on the prairie house fire, it also includes a lot of information on Wright's family, background, growing up, and later years. The sections about the fire read like a contemporary murder mystery and were very well done. Highly recommend.

a client left a copy of "loving frank" at my place of work so i read it and developed a new interest in frank lloyd wright. when i saw this book title, i bought it with trepidation, fearing that it would deal strictly with the murders and not much else. i had hoped for more information on the life of mr wright and his lady, and i was not disappointed.the author has done an almost painful amount of research and this book is thorough and filled with not only fact but also written in such a way as to become a thrilling novel that i found difficult to put down. i hesitate to use the word "gripping" because it is so overused, but for me, i couldnt wait to get back to it at day's end.the only thing i have a difficult time understanding is why the author went to such pains to study mr wright when it seems, at least to me, that he has a very active dislike for the man and his lifestyle. when mentioning frank he minced no words, referring to him as self absorbed and irresponsible, whereas when his wife was mentioned, it was always "ppor catherine", "sad catherine", "faithful catherine". his lifestyle was at the time unaccepted to be sure, but it seems odd that mr drennan would spend so many hours researching the life of a man he disliked. in any case, i'm certainly glad he did. a fine book, especially for students of the genius of frank lloyd wright.

This was a fascinating book! Couldn't put it down. I knew there had been a murder somehow related to Frank Lloyd Wright, but didn't know the details. The book goes into great detail about the architect and the terrible event that occurred. I couldn't stop thinking about it for several days after reading it!

Drennan's "Death In a Prairie House" is as good a true crime novel as the best Ann Rule books. Drennan meticulously starts at the beginning, as any good true crime novel should, with the parents of Frank lloyd Wright and carefully creates a profile that goes a long way to explaining the reason for Wright's adult behavior. It's fascinating.I first read about Frank Lloyd Wright and Mameh Borthwick in the book "Loving Frank." The story so fascinated me that I wanted to learn more about this strange and horrific tragedy. "Death In a Prairie House" goes a long way to filling in some of the blanks. What's more, Drennan's writing ability is amazing. What else has this guy written, because I want to read it, gosh darnit! Each of his sentences are brilliantly crafted yet completely easy to understand. In addition, he is a true artist who uses vocabulary as his medium! His use and placement of words is truly breathtaking.I only wish there was more we could learn of Mameh, Lloyd's "feminist mistress." "Loving Frank" probably provides the best portrait, but it would be nice to know a bit more about her from a biographical standpoint. Drennan does not seem particularly sympathetic to Mameh, nor does he chastise her outright. I suppose he wants to leave it up to the reader to decide or maybe allow history to settle the score once and for all. What you will come away with after reading "Death In a Praire House" is: an open jaw (how can something so horrific have happened?), a better understanding of Frank Lloyd Wright and the progression of his works, and a bit of jealously for the author who can write so well, as well as a whetted appetite for more writing from him.

I felt The most anticipated event in the end was rushed.

Fascinating and revealing of the dark side of the narcissistic architect and the darkness that surrounded him.

It is certainly s mystery and a good one. I learned a lot about FLR and now would like to read a bio.

Super...a fun read with a dramatic ending.
