Loved the book. Read it daily.

Much needed in your arsenal in understanding our native languages.

An incredible overview of the linguistic evidence for Nahuatl influence in the culture of New Mexico and Southern Colorado. MUST READ!!!

Excellent writing, very clear explanation of what has been misunderstood and misinterpreted in Mexica culture. I recommend this book highly!!

New Mexican Spanish does indeed exhibit many archaisms of old Castilian, so the claim that it is a "pervasive myth" is wrong. Go to any of the Hispanic villages on the high road to Taos and listen to the old timer's speak Spanish. The isolation of New Mexico did preserve elements of the old language. That being said, there was Tlaxcaltecan colonies throughout Northern Mexico i.e. Nuevo Leon, Chihuahua, Durango and Zacatecas who accompanied the Spanish. They had been staunch allies of the Spanish since Cortes and had been in the Southwest since Marcos de Niza and Coronado ( Coronado's force was composed principally of central Mexicans, not Spanish) The ancestor of the chile verde largo (Hatch) and Chimayo chile was most likely brought by them from central Mexico and diffused out from their colony in Analco ("other side of the river") in Santa Fe. That is just one example of the hardware that was brought by the Native Mexicans and left its mark. Their software - the Nahuatl language also heavily influenced this old form of Castilian to produce New Mexican Spanish we have today so I am glad this is being written about.

Kurly's Totacho debunks the myth of how "non-native" New Mexicans are Spanish, but in fact are Mexicans by their native ancestry of Nahua/Tlaxcalteca (Tlaxcala) descedent. He points out the evidence linguistically with New Mexican Spanish which eventually becomes obvious when you point out the Nahuatl words. The book consist of an intro, glossary and conclusion.A short and easy to read book that could be read in one sitting, but will be returned to review it in the future.

This is a great resource. My family descends from New Mexico and I've always wondered about how our culture came to be. This book provides a lot of answers.
