I agree with the author that our schools are some of the best examples of 'Lean' organizations in existence in America and that they are the organizations that our big companies should look to first for basic process improvement ideas before chasing the latest, expensive, often technically-complex, solution trend.The author walks through his daughter's first day in First Grade and employs an owl to help convey how many well-executed lean principles he sees in place in the school environment that were fashioned out of necessity. This book succeeds in bringing back a concept and process -'leaning' an organization to make it more efficient and effective- from the unnecessary complexity often foisted upon it by the gurus and consultants to the simplicity at its roots, and what better way than through the experience that is the first day of First Grade.If you want yourself, your direct reports or anyone in your organization to quickly grasp what 'leaning' an organization means through simple but real-life examples, I would recommend this be the first book on your Lean Six Sigma reading list.
The writing style is a bit strange, and occasionally annoying. The authors interaction with the school teacher seems unnatural. I know it is made up, but their dialog is occasionally painful to read. There were times when I wondered why the teacher did not just smack him! I am fighting through it because there are lots of useful messages contained in the book, and it maybe just me.

One of the best books to start your Lean journey. Easy to understand, very close to all of you who attended school. You can get closer to the world of continuos improvement, the easy logical solutions which serve always the customer. In case of a school, which is by the way the place of learning, everything must be set up to make learning for the pupils posible and easy and make fun. But it might help you not only make your work more effectivy in your working place but at home and everywhere to spend less time for useless activities.
This little book taught me more about lean than I have learned from many other books. It really was a great book for everyone planning applying lean principles to their business.
I'm starting in a leadership position that has great responsibility. My boss gave me this book to read. It reminded me that even as an adult, lean principles are necessary. This applies to work, home, and life.I have learned a lot from this day in first grade.
