This is my selected methodology and this is the best book to clearly understand the topic. Great details, easy to read, and it has been a big help in my research.
This book is a good introduction to IPA. It is well written and should prove useful for the experienced researcher and the graduate student alike. What I especially appreciated was the way the authors compared and contrasted their method with other qualitative methods. While I am not sure I will actually use IPA in my research, I believe I could do so with this book as a guide.
Used this text as the main text for the my doctorate research method. Essential reading if you using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) as a research method for your study or writing a paper. Explains the main features of IPA and gives great examples of IPA in action. Available in Kindle version too and it is handy to have both. The Kindle version allows you to search the book very quickly for key words.
I am a doctoral student in occupational therapy using IPA as the method to study the lived experiences of older mothers who live with their adult sons who have intellectual disabilities. I initially found IPA as I was looking for a phenomenological approach to my topic. This book is enormously useful as it clearly articulates the theoretical/philosophical underpinnings of IPA (yes, phenomenology and hermeneutics can be understood and used in research!). In addition, it outlines a methodological approach to IPA without being too formulaic or rigid. Certainly some of the contents will be familiar to those who have read as much about IPA as they can get their hands on (like me) but having it all in one place is fabulously helpful. The timing of publication of this book was perfect for me.
This is one of several of the texts I utilized when doing my doctoral dissertation research. It is well written--even interesting!!--and clearly explains the methodological approach utilized. I recommend it for anyone considering qualitative studies.
