If you are considering purchasing this book, I assume you are already familiar with the Walking Dead. This hardcover collection is my favorite way to read and collect the series. It saves so much room versus buying single issues or the trade paperbacks. The beautiful hardcover protects the stores and ensures they will last for a while. Each volume contains 12 comics as well as some rare artwork and commentary from Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard. I love how these look on my shelf and I would recommend them to ANY Walking Dead fan, whether you are brand new to the comics, or already own single issues or trade paperbacks.....these are THE way to collect, read, and enjoy them!!

I got the kindle version and it was hard to read the larger panels on my small phone screen. It was perfectly fine on a larger tablet.If you are a fan of the show and haven't read this, I will warn you that there are substantial differences. It is as if a drunk person explained the plot of the comic books to the screenwriter in a loud bar, and them the screenwriter wrote the show from memory a month later. This is to say that the 'highlights' from the comics made it to the show, but it is still a different story.People are on here trying to review this with deep literary analysis techniques, as if this were Shakespear or Proust or something. This is a comic about zombies. There are many like it, but this is the best one.If you like the show, you will like the comics. I promise. They complement each other, but are different enough to warrant spending time on both.

I bought this after watching the first 7 seasons of the TV show (and being severely disappointed with it from about season 4 onward), and it’s GREAT. I’m so grateful that the TV show inspired me to check out the comic, because the comic is better in many ways—but also, it’s different enough from the TV show that it’s engaging even from the pure plot and character development perspective, since people and events diverge so frequently from what I expect from watching the series.I’ve ordered (but not yet received) the next two volumes of the compendia [shifts glasses up nose], based on how good this volume is. Already, there are so many things that are different from the series, that I’m on the edge of my seat just wondering how things can possibly turn out here.HUGE SPOILERS for those who don’t care about surprises but want to get a sense of how different the comic is from the series: So there’s no Daryl, Merle, or Beth; Sophia, Lori, and Dale live but Carol dies; Carol is a needy sex freak; Rick loses his right hand early on; Michonne shacks up with Tyreese, Andrea shacks up with Dale; they never use the term “walkers” but DO discuss terminology periodically; Glenn isn’t a virgin at the beginning.

I've purchased all volumes up to 22 and the TV show has just about caught up to wear I am in the novels. These books are friggen awesome. I don't read much and my buddy lent me VOL 1 after he knew I liked the show. Well, I burned through the first one and then just went on a tear buying 4 volumes at a time...the price is pretty good for what you get out of these. $9-$15 is the range I've paid per novel, I'm not sure why they aren't the same but anyways, I keep buying them none the less. The story was written before the TV Show and the show follows the story but there is some differences. The written story is more violent and graphic then the tv show but the tv show does a decent job of sticking with main ideas. I've noticed that certain plot things that happen in the book also happen in the show but there is a unique twist like a different character it happens to or something like that. Which makes reading these volumes great cuz I have some idea of where the story is going (after having watched all tv episodes) but there are still surprises. If you like the TV show and haven't read these, give it a try and you will get a whole new experience of the Walking Dead story. I'm putting this same review under every volume I've purchased (1-22) so people can see it. go buy these!

I can't wait til the hubby is done with these so I can actually read them. We are fanatic TWD watchers and I finally got a chance to check these off on his Christmas list!!! He isn't a very big reader , but oh my goodness he read through these so fast!! and the entire time I had to tell him to stop telling me parts cause I wanted to read them, he said that they are um a little more "informative" than the show, so I would say NSFK's, which im really happy that he read them first and we know not to hand them over, we even feel uncomfortable giving them to our 15yo. I got him books 1&2 and plan on working on getting him a set of 2 twice a year. I would suggest getting them after you've watched the show only because if you read them first you might be a little disappointed that some things don't happen in the show that happen in the book. But if reading after the watching the show it gives a little more depth to most of the scenes. overall im happy with my purchase and plan on getting more

I get excited every year they put another one of the Omnibuses out. The artwork is phenomenal, and the inclusion of additional covers, sketches, and other drawings at the end is a welcomed finish. It is a big heavy book, so definitely designed as a collector's item. Highly recommended.Update: anyone know if #7 is coming out? These have been perfectly timed in the past to come out around the holidays and this year, nothin.Update: I contacted a distributor and they said while they don't have an official release date for Omnibus 7, they estimated sometime in July/August 2017

Once John Barry acquires an editor that is to the level of his writing - I believe that he may become a perennial favorite to be short listed for major awards. There is a very fine line between Barry and the widely read H.W. Brands. Both write with a very lucid easy to read style. Both have top-notch research (although Barry may have the edge for true topic research) abilities, and both pick great topics for their work. So what is the difference between the two authors? Brands has a great editor that keeps his books tight and on topic. Unfortunately, Barry has a tendency (With both "Rising Tide" and the "Great Influenza") to get a little outside the theme of his book and get a little wordy. In fact, with both of Barry's works it seems like he is blending two stories together into one coherent work ( as an example - the stories about the Ku Klux Klan were fascinating, but they didn't actually fit within the context of the story.) However, having said all of that, "Rising Tide" is a very interesting work. Barry's portrayal of the the 1920's Mississippi hits with a hammer - the "shock" value of the inequality and incompotence that occurred is unbelievable. Barry brings all of this to life with the vast conspiracies and cover-ups that has forever shamed the region. Despite my complaint of the lack of a great editor - "Rising Tide" is definitely worth reading. This is history at its best - a great read that helps us to understand the past and how we can try to prevent it from reoccurring.

This worthy volume begins with the days of James Buchanan Eads (who built the first bridge across the lower Mississippi), who favored "spillways" to contain the raging river's inevitable floods, and his rival engineer Edward Humphreys, who favored ever-taller levees. The Army Corps of engineers and local authorities had largely followed the "levee only" policy from after the Civil War until the unprecedented 1927 flood.When the incessant rains and floods came, they were more pervasive and worse than anyone had imagined. Author John M. Barry details not only what happened in "the Delta" -- cotton country -- but what happened on Mississippi tributaries, too, leaving hundreds of thousands of poor farm families destitute and homeless. When the flood hits, the author concentrates on little Greenville, Mississippi, including the aristocratic Percy family (one cousin of whom was novelist Walker Percy), that ran the plantations and dominated politics; also then-reigning New Orleans, which tried to save itself by having levees downriver dynamited. By trying to raise quick labor to raise the levees, the Percys and other leaders conscripted black sharecroppers and then brutalized and abused them, making of Greenville a sore spot in race relations in what was once a relatively tolerant area. New Orleans' inability to fulfill its commitments to reimburse those it flooded out (and its duplicity in tweaking the legal system to its advantage) gave rise to Louisiana populism, most notably Huey Long.RISING TIDE is a readable and useful chronicle of a surprisingly under-documented subject in national history. Reading this book helps readers understand the shifting national politics of the late 1920's and 1930's, and such social phenomena as the exodus of disenfranchised blacks to the cities of the North. I would have hoped that a book of this scope and specificity would have more than one "overview" map, but that's a minor deficit in such a generous study.

The 1927 flood was a truly monumental event, which had escaped my notice until I read this book. But far more interesting was the author's depiction of the social structure of the two most affected states, Louisiana and Mississippi. In addition to being excellent political history of the two states, Rising Tide chronicles race relations in terms that are by turns horrifying and heart-breaking. Reading about a white overseer in Mississippi, running out of sandbags and earth to fill them, ordering the blacks under his charge to lie themselves down on the levee to hold the water back with their bodies, sent chills down my spine. This is a great political history of the era when the Southern states instituted Jim Crow, and the obscene violence that became the norm in Mississippi. Barry captures it well. When outsiders, conspicuously Herbert Hoover, arrive and have to deal with the shall-we-say-unique culture of the Mississippi Delta, the result could not be more appalling. Kudos to the author, not only for a remarkable achievement, but for having the courage to research and tell the tale at all. .

Excellent history of the flood, Mississippi River failed flood control and the arrogance of political powers of the time. Excellent lessons of politicians ignoring knowledgeable engineers and scientists to garner votes and maintain their "control" of the average man's lives. At times the text angers this reader and at others it just amazes at the strength of individuals and the sacrifices one will make to survive. Really a very revealing book on human nature and the dominance of Mother Nature, complicated with political arrogance and waste.

I am slogging my way thru this! It was recommended by a retired weather meteorologist and I can see why he really liked it. The first part of the book is very dry; mostly statistics and data. But when it actually gets to the part about the flood, it is an easier read and I am finally there and starting to enjoy it, altho there are many parts that are so terrible, it is hard to believe it. The racial divide was very cruel during those times and as bad as it is today, I certainly hope it is better than it was then. As for the flood part, it is a reminder that Mother Nature can also be quite cruel and you should remember the past and be prepared.

Which brings me to my major beef-- NOT ENOUGH! It would have been very nice if at least most of the clubs had their patches pictured. Considering how many clubs have websites and E-mail addresses, this does'nt seem to be too big an expectation... What IS here is very nice---some beautiful photography and some essays by clubbers.. BUT---another beef, there are some inaccuracies and incompletes (nit picking? perhaps.) 1)FILTHY FEW is sub group within the Hells Angels MC ONLY, and a club that stole the name in New Zealand. It is NOT a "common idiom throughout the motorcycle culture". 2)The NUGGETS MC has not flown the described patch of "a beer drinking rabbit on a motorcycle" since it's very early days. Since the late 60's, they've flown their current patch--- a gold nugget with a motorcycle inside. They rode full dressers back then and morphed into choppers--an interesting fact not mentioned. 3)The Mongrel Mob of NZ should not have been included--- they wear cuts with patches but they DON'T RIDE. 4)The Gypsy Jokers is listed as a"classic club" and it is--- their patch is listed as a grinning skull... gee whiz, that's the Australian club who just appropriated the name and made up their own patch. The Aussies have since made a connection to the originals and adopted the real top and bottom rockers but kept the skull center patch. The REAL Gypsy Joker patch was and is a walking jester--- that's a real boner on the author's part. An annoying incomplete--"Curious about that demonic critter on the Pagan's patch?" sez the back cover and the blurb on Amazon--- Yeah, it's the norse fire demon Surtur or dark Surt, BUT they DON"t say that it's a direct lift from a 1963 issue of Marvel comic's JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY in a TALES OF ASGARD story drawn by one of the greatest comic book artists of the 20th century- JACK KIRBY. Despite these criticisms, it's still a cool book... One really funny feature is a reprint of a 1960's cop manuel on outlaw bikers--- so THAT'S where they got the idea that I had a shotgun rigged up in my handlebars!

The ONE PERCENTER ENCYCLOPEDIA alludes to being an A-Z authority on outlaw motorcycle clubs ... a one-stop shop for anything/everything pertaining to such clubs ... quite appealing to anyone curious in learning more about the outlaw biker culture. While the book provides a nicely organized listing of outlaw clubs with a decent collection of color photos, it lacks the substantive content I was expecting for a book with "encyclopedia" in its title.Organized alphabetically, THE ONE PERCENTER ENCYCLOPEDIA does provide general information about a large number of bike clubs, including a multitude of lesser-known groups. Most of the entries follow a standard base of details such as date of origin, estimated membership and the territory the clubs preside. As expected, the larger, more recognizable (infamous?) clubs receive more lavish, multiple-paged entries and more photographs, but not much .Considering the subject matter, the listing of clubs is likely incomplete/ever-changing and the availability of elaborate details is understandably scant as secrecy plays a part into the one-percenter culture; I don't fault the author for this. My issue is that the book could have been so much more, well ... "encyclopedic". It would have been nice to see the colors/patch accompanying each club entry. The larger clubs do have known histories (proven by the numerous television documentaries like the "Gangland" series and books written by actual members) that could have provided significantly more information, timelines, leadership, etc. Appendices could have shed light on the various add-on patches and symbolism. Other, overview topics could have been covered as well: the numerous other patches worn, crime, tattoos, the role of women in these groups, a timeline of significant events and how the culture has progressed/regressed over the years.The whole one-percenter culture is enigmatic, ominous and provocatively interesting to those who don't ride. I believe the ONE PERCENTER ENCYCLOPEDIA is an interesting and colorful presentation of a large list of outlaw biker clubs. One the surface, the book serves as a decent overview that covers a large number of the more obscure clubs and should satisfy those with little knowledge of such clubs. But for those who enjoy reading about biker clubs, the ONE PERCENTER ENCYCLOPEDIA will likely fall short of being the resource it is expected to be.

All I can say is that Mr. Hayes did a great job in telling what the clubs represent and how they have been misrepresented by the media as being villains when they actually are a brotherhood living by their own rules which by the constitution is everyone's right. Again he has done a great job. I highly recommend this encyclopedia for those wanting this insight.

The title of this book is a bit misleading. When I saw that it is an Encyclopedia, I assumed that there would be information about the various OMC's; history, notable members, significant events about criminal involvement, etc.The book is merely an identification of OMC colors or patches with very little information about the clubs. My bad for making that assumption, but the book would be more fairly referred to as a OMC colors or patch picture book. I wanted the book for more of a historical purpose, something to show the evolution of the clubs, their conflicts, alliances and the dynamics of their criminal involvement. I should have done a little more research before I bought the book.

The book is missing more clubs than it contains. Those that are in it have very little information about them. Useless.

About the Author

Alexei Ivanov was born in 1969 just outside Moscow. He served in the Soviet Armed Forces for four and a half years. He is an avid collector of Russian militaria, and he is especially interested in the Russian Civil War period. He divides his time between Russia and his home in Cambridgeshire.Philip Jowett was born in Leeds in 1961, and has always been interested in military history. His first Osprey book was the ground-breaking Men-at-Arms 306: 'Chinese Civil War Armies 1911–49'; he has since published a three-part sequence on The Italian Army 1940-45 (Men-at-Arms 340, 349 & 353). A rugby league enthusiast and amateur genealogist, he is married and lives in Leeds.

This was an excellent book for me since I knew very little about this war before I read it. This was sort of a practice for World War I. One thing I found interesting was the Japanese military was actually more caring to the Manchurian and Chinese civilians than the Russians were. The behavior during the Second World War by the Japanese was they were uncivilized, barbaric, and degenerate killers/torturers, etc.The failure of the Russians to win any major battles directly resulted in the downfall of the Romanov Dynasty in 1917, along with a variety of other factors.

I probably own about 20 or so Osprey titles, mostly about ancient history, but a few about WWI and the time period immediately before and after that conflict. This is my favorite Osprey title, in terms of content and superlative execution.The book contains a satisfactory chronology of the war, and sections on new technology and innovations which came into play, such as machine guns, trench warfare, aerial observation, and telephone communications.There is also a section on use of local Chinese in paramilitary roles by both sides, more effectively, incidentally, by the Japanese.The authors explore the level of training, morale, and discipline on both sides. They also detail the kinds of troops that Russia employed: local Siberian militia, Cossacks, line infantry, and frontier guards, the last of which, as it turned out, were the best of the Russian troops in terms of their effectiveness. Unfortunately for Russia, the frontier guards only fielded 55 companies of 250 men each. The section on Japan has less information on troop types, focusing on their relatively good standard of living and treatment, and high level of motivation.There is a good amount of detail on uniforms, but not too much: I don't read these books to find out what color piping the 1st regiment of the 2nd brigade wore. There is just enough to satisfy one's interest in how the troops were outfitted and equipped, in a general way.The plates are simply outstanding: on the Russian side, there are pages depicting summer uniforms, winter uniforms, Cossacks, and frontier and naval uniforms. The Japanese plates show early war uniforms, which were of an old-style pattern, and also summer and winter uniforms.It was interesting to read that even though the war was well-observed by foreign military representatives, they didn't seem to take the lessons to heart, and repeated the same mistakes at the beginning of the Great War. I'm referring to such things as underestimation of the effectiveness of machine guns as an offensive & defensive weapon, and also the importance of good defensive trenches. Most notably in this respect, the reliance on elan and the "offensive spirit" in lieu of good planning and leadership, which in just over a decade destroyed the cream of France, Great Britain, and Germany.

Lately, it seems as if Osprey's Men-at-Arms series has degenerated from its previously decent summaries into a series devoted to explaining obscure military buttons and uniform features. Alexei Ivanov, a former Russian army officer, appears to have actually produced a Men-at-Arms title that is fairly fresh and original, featuring the oft-neglected Russo-Japanese War. Ivanov has not only done excellent research on the Russian side (and readers will enjoy his collection of Russian military photographs), but he has provided good insight into the Japanese side as well. Although Ivanov does discuss uniforms as well as organization, he does not get wrapped up in minor details; instead, he offers a soldier's perspective on why this piece of equipment or uniform item was important. In sum, this little volume on the Russo-Japanese War is a gem. After a decent introduction and a fairly detailed chronology, Ivanov provides a very interesting section on military innovations in the war (machineguns, communications, trench warfare, observation balloons and guerrilla warfare). For example, few other histories mention that the Russians introduced two wireless radio companies just before the end of the war. Similarly, Ivanov spends the time to discuss how the Russians and Japanese used machineguns differently. For once, a Men-at-Arms title has been written for military specialists and not just model-builders or re-enactors. Ivanov then provides a succinct but detailed summary of the Russian army in 1904, providing details on order of battle, organization, equipment and morale. Although Ivanov spends about seven pages discussing Russian uniforms, he does not beat the reader to death with minutiae. The sections on the Japanese army are noticeably shorter, but quite decent. The heart of the volume of course is the color plates, which are well worth the cost of this title. The color plates are Russian staff; Russian summer and winter uniforms; Russian Cossacks; Russian Frontier and naval troops; Japanese early war uniforms; Japanese Khaki uniforms; Japanese winter uniforms. The photographs are also quite good, including many from the author's collection.

This is indeed a picture book. It may be more suited for the younger crowd, but adults will like the colorful illustrations of the uniforms, ranks, and soldiers of the Russo-Japanese War. If you are reading a more detailed and academic text on the confrontation, odds are you won't have the kind or number of illustrations presented here showing the details, in color, of what the soldiers looked like. This little text is a great supplement for those who study the war and want a better visual of the soldiers and their uniforms. This is not just for kids.

Typically good Osprey "Cliff Notes" for the topic.A quibble: The table on p. 41 for Japanese ranks doesn't match the captions for photos on pp. 37 or 39, or the text for plates F1 or G2. According to the table, the "tough veteran" (Plate G2) would be a private 2nd class... ;)A map of the campaign area wouldn't have hurt, either.

This is just wonderful for the price! It is simple. I do wish there was a snack section, but since I make my grocery list on a separate sheet of paper or on my phone I just use that section. I personally don’t want to carry this to the market. But it’s adorble and simple to really help just focus and meal plan which saves so much money over time.

Nice book, easy to use. Only problem is when I use it my husband holds me to the plan! Lol!

I was looking for a meal planner but will not be buying this one. The blurb assumes that only "ladies" do meal planning and cooking. These word choices and assumptions are very off-putting.
