Some successful examples of preventive anti-concealment practice are also presented.In the book, the term ‘concealment’ is used to represent the two distinct behaviors uncovered in the investigations: (i) facts and information about an organization and its functioning being hidden from those that need them – here the concealment can be due to various factors, such as complexity and miscommunication, to name but two – and (ii) the conscious and deliberate action of keeping important information secret or misrepresenting it. About the Author

Dmitry Chernov is a researcher in the Chair of Entrepreneurial Risks at ETH Zurich. He has more than 15 years of experience as a corporate communication consultant in the former Soviet Union Republics, focusing on improving investor and government relations, as well as crisis communication within the following industries: oil and gas, chemical, electric power, metals and mining, telecommunication, transport, etc. He specializes on researching solutions for efficient risk information transmission that enables timely decision-making before and during industrial disasters.Didier Sornette is Professor on the Chair of Entrepreneurial Risks at the ETH Zurich, Director of the Financial Crisis Observatory, Co-founder of the ETH Risk Center and member of the Swiss Finance Institute.  He has received many prizes and honors, among them the 2000 Research McDonnell award and the Risques-Les Echos prize 2002. He is a Fellow of the World Innovation Foundation (2004) and, since 2013, of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. With this study Dmitry Chernov and Didier Sornette provide a great contribution for the understanding of man-made disasters. For this purpose, they didn’t choose a theoretic framework, but mainly an in-depth analysis of selected case studies of the last decades. These disasters cover a broad range of fields, starting from industry, stepping to the financial sector, politics, medical care and ending up with retail as well as the consumer-oriented production industry. In an impressive and very well written way, they give insights, how relatively small initial mistakes or accidents may lead to disastrous consequences for directly, but also for just accidentally concerned persons. Not the primary cause as such leads to the huge loss of lives and/or values, but mainly the misbehavior of responsible persons. Similar patterns of misbehavior may be identified everywhere, independently from the concrete case. They show clearly that information concealment may be the result of manifold influences and contexts. It can be understood as the result of underlying severe general shortcomings in the interaction between the actors as well as of the organization. They are strongly related to personal or cultural aversion against failures and a strictly short-term or profit-oriented management context. Therefore, the entire chapter 3 may even be considered also as guideline for good management!

This is a great account of disasters. It gives a good account of what happened, a good account of the problems that lead to the final result and a useful summary with lessons at the end. It is not too theoretical to be useful.

I've been working within the risk management industry for a decade and read some interesting books about the subject. I can say that this is by far the best book ever about risks. No framework, no ISO, no ISACA, just.....reality.I don't fully accept the theory that all risk are based on uncertainty and this book simply proves that major risks are not usually uncertain conditions.The only uncertainty is when the event will happen. Is like playing a russian roulette with the industry, but there is no uncertainty about it's magnitude or possibility. Just let time and human do their "jobs" and it will happen, sooner or later. I can't reacl the number of times that I've heard the excuse of manager: "I didn't knew", "No one told me about this issue before", "I had no idea that I couldn't do this/that", etc etc.The lack of controls, training, procedures, falsification, negligence, overconfidence, sharing information, also the existence of bad or no information, registry, maintenance etc etc. Uncertainty risk exists? YES they do! But many of the risks we face are not uncertain. They have been hidden by someone and sometimes in plain sight. But the excess of trust or lack of knowledge don't let us see the reality.

Dr. Chernov and Professor Sornette have identified one of the main culprits in major disasters – the concealment of risk information. While this notion has been mentioned in the media for some time – especially following major disasters, the book is a pioneering work which converts media noise (blame games, sensationalism, posturing, etc.) into a solid analytical framework, based on historical lens. It “connects the dots” and allows decision makers to examine their processes and take actions.The book includes a description of dozens of actual disasters, each followed by a thorough analysis and a summary of how the information was concealed from decision makers, governments, and the public, both before, during, and after the disaster. It demonstrated how such lack of transparency may have lead to the disaster in the first place and how it hampered mitigation efforts, causing unnecessary bad outcomes.The richness of the examples brings the book to life and provides useful warning and understanding of the underlying processes for decision makers and regulators.

The book proceeds with an in depth analysis of various case studies as far back as the mismanagement of the Soviet Red Army at the start of World War II to the present day. Examples such as the Challenger Space Shuttle, the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill and the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster are still incredibly important but much studied. The inclusion of various less-known parts of the world - in other parts of the world but chiefly in Russia - is a useful addition.In places the presentation of material is uneven and the book could have been more smoothly structured and divided up into different chapters. However, in places the book is simply unputdownable. It is simply very important that this book has been published.

I love this series! You can never have too many copies of your favorite series. I've already reviewed each book in this series separately, and own the hard copies of this series, but wanted to also own the paper back versions. While I love the box set, the only compliant I have is that the books are smaller than I was excepting them to be. They're smaller than a standard paperback. I'd still recommend this box set for fans of the TID series.

Clockwork Princess is the stunning conclusion to Cassandra Clare’s the Infernal Devices trilogy. The pacing of the third book is much brisker than its predecessor and immediately drags you into the plot. There are also significantly more scenes with action in them, which help to break up the scenes that steadily move the story along. As with the previous books, the story is very character-driven and continues to bring further depth to each character’s personality.Will continues to be my favourite focus of any scene with his witty comments and sense of humour. It was nice to see him play off his sister at times, because normally only Tessa can manage Will. Although they have been apart for many years they still have a wonderfully authentic relationship, like how easily she is able to get under his skin. Will and Jem’s parabatai relationship, as it was in the previous books, is so real that you can easily imagine the love they have for one another, the pain each feels when the other is hurt, and how they would do anything for each other.It was nice to see the continued development of characters that we’ve grown to love, as well as the new faces that have joined the familiar at the Institute. The number of important characters does not ever feel overwhelming or confusing, as each has been given the time to become established and grow in the world that Cassandra Clare has created. I love each and every one of the characters because they are not only true but integral to the story as a whole.Despite having read this entire series before and knowing what will happen – it is still so brilliantly written that it elicits myriad emotions throughout. Each character feels real and their lives affect your own. A tear slips down my face as one character experiences unbearable pain, while another comes at the thought of losing a character I’ve grown to love so much. A grin overtakes my face in light of the overwhelmingly happy news. The books that I have grown to love are the ones that speak to you, change you, and will forever stay with you.Clockwork Princess is quite possibly the best series finale that I have read and certainly the best final book in a trilogy. Despite the book causing me to cry, multiple times, I never felt dissatisfied with the conclusion. The story comes to a climactic end, then Cassandra Clare takes the final chapter to pull everything together and the epilogue to make me cry again. I loved re-reading this series so much and hope that you are inspired to read it as well.

My thoughts are really all over the map as I have just finished this book and though it took me quite a long time to finish it, simply because I couldn't get my head back in the game of reading, it turned out to really envelope me emotionally. I literally cried through chapter 23 and the Epilogue. I also found it to be quite satisfying as the ending of the trilogy. Bittersweet feelings for sure as with any trilogy that the story is "over". As I try to keep my reviews spoiler free, let me just say I was pleasantly surprised by my overall feeling of the book upon completion. In the beginning having such a hard time getting into the book I thought "oh boy, I have to read nearly 600 pages on something I'm just viewing as average..." However that really was my own attitude and not in any way an indication of the book itself because after about 100 pages (which is only through chapter 5 mind you) I was hooked. I was down for about a month, maybe more, in a reading slump and the timing just wasn't right for me to pick this one up at the start but I'm super glad I came back to it and finished it. I would have missed out greatly had I not read the ending to a great story. The conclusion left me very satisfied.Now to the good stuff...and be prepared for quotes because the entire book had a lot of great ones that I absolutely must add in my review.Aw...Jem...and Will....these 2 guys have got to be at the top of my favorite male leads in a book list. I can't pick just one as a favorite, though I know many are huge fans of Will, but I can't pick between them (much like Tessa). From their incredibly loyal and deeply connected friendship to their undying love of the same woman, they are what puts the "awe" in "awesome". The relationship between these guys is more than just friendship and more than brotherhood. Honestly I'm not so sure we have any relationship in life that even comes close to the parabatai relationship. At its core is the principal of undying love and sacrifice and devotion."Jem has always given me exactly what I needed in the way I needed it, even when I did not know myself what I required." (Will)Tessa loves Jem and at the end of book 2, Clockwork Prince, she has agreed to marry him. It's not pity that she feels for him, though he is dying, but it's admiration mixed with love. But her heart is torn because she also deeply loves Will. Is it possible to have this kind of deep love for two people at the same time though? That is a question she battles with."A heart divided against itself cannot stand, as they say. You love them both, and it tears you apart." (Magnus)"It was a near incomprehensible tangle, the three of them, but there was one certainty, and that was that there was no lack of love between them."There are many stories being told in this one book, well this whole trilogy really. Aside from the main characters Jem, Will and Tessa, this book also wraps up nicely the stories of Gabriel, Gideon, Cecily, Sophie, Charlotte and Henry. All of the side cast characters are ones that the reader grows attached to through the trilogy, of which I was quite fond of all of them. I would have been disappointed had their story lines not had some closure as well.At the heart this is a story of love. Love of fellow shadowhunters, love of friendship, love of brotherhood, love of soul mates, love of family. I love the book series, I've read them twice, working on a third time. The reason why I bought the soft cover set is because I wanted the binding art. The covers have a matte feel to them, they are not glossy and the print quality is nice. I also have the mortal instruments set, and they are glossy, and compared to the mortal instruments set, the infernal devices books are taller. Overall the quality is better compared to tmi. Also, it comes in a box, unlike the other series.

About the Author

Arthur Beiser, a native of New York City, received B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in physics from New York University, where he later served as Associate Professor of Physics. He then was a Senior Research Scientist at the Lamont Geo- logical Observatory of Columbia University. His research interests were chiefly in cosmic rays and in magnetohydrodynamics as applied to geophysics and astrophys- ics. A Fellow of The Explorers Club, Dr. Beiser was the first chairman of its Committee on Space Exploration. He is the author or coauthor of 36 books, mostly college texts on physics and mathematics, 14 of which have been translated into a total of 27 languages. Two of his books are on sailing, The Proper Yacht and The Sailor’s World. Figure 13-21 is a photograph of Dr. Beiser at the helm of his 58-ft sloop; he and his wife Germaine have sailed over 150,000 miles, includ- ing two Atlantic crossings and a rounding of Cape Horn. Germaine Beiser, who has degrees in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and New York University, is the author or coauthor of seven books on various aspects of physics and has contributed to The Physical Universe. For a number of years she was the editor of a cruising guide to the Adriatic Sea.

It's hard to imagine, but Schaum's Outlines (SO) have been around for over 60 years. I bought my first one in (Analytical Geometry-no longer taught as a separate subject) in 1961. Initially they only covered the introductory core subjects in math and physics. As they became more popular, the number of subjects covered increased and now envelope most curriculum from the colleges of business, finance, language, and the arts. SOs are for students who are serious about learning the subject and are also using a subject-matter text book. You learn physics by doing problems. The outline books are not for someone who wants to cover the subject in a cursory manner and only have a superficial understanding of the subject, or considers themself a dummy.In general, all of SOs science and math outlines usually follow a logical sequence of material in a chapter format that is typical of a high school or college text book. This SO on "Applied Physics" is a little bit different in that no one physics book or course would cover all of this material. The book's problems are oriented to an introductory, high school level course in physics with no real discussion of the theory or principles involved. You definitely need a physics text book (or prior familiarity) to understand the origin of these formulas. Some sections are a bit dated; I doubt if most school system discuss how simple machines (pulley systems), spherical optics and lenses work; while other sections deal with advanced subjects such as elasticity, kinetic theory of matter and solid state physics.Typically 15-25 solved problems for the 35 different sections; followed by many other problems with answers only. No calculus required, trig table, constants and conversion factors are supplied. All solution techniques/methodologies are pretty much formula plugging solutions. If you are taking an AP high school physics course, the SO, "College Physics Outline" is more appropriate. In helping many high school/college students, I have discovered that most high school science/math teachers have never heard of Schaum's Outline (amazing) and today's bookstore typically don't carry a good selection of SOs. So you're better off searching through the Amazon offerings and ordering it that way.

This is one of the most valuable source books ever! A third generation family member is now using it for his education in physic.Schaum's Outlines, and this one as well, have always been the student and teacher's best friend. They simplify otherwise difficult subject material.M M. Brown

Purchased from Amazon with their usual efficiency and keen price. This book is up to Schaum's usual helpful standard. A good spread of topics that would suit a HIgh School student, with numerous worked examples for the puzzled and desperate! I would recommended the companion "3,000 solved questions" as well, especially if more background is needed in the early tertiary stages.

So far I've had success with this book as a supplement to my school textbook. At the level of most introductory physics courses, the students need to have problems explained to them, and then given enough to solve themselves that they master the idea. This is exactly what this workbook (note: not *textbook*) provides.It derives the equations you'll use (sometimes making you do it as a guided exercise), and then puts them to use.

My 4yo is happy enough with this calendar, especially because it comes with 2 small posters (8x10). But I guess I was expecting stills from the movies and not someone's figurines posed for the calendar photos.

My 11 year old daughter is learning all about the Star Wars era. She loves the posters and put the calendar immediately after receiving it in the mail.

I only like the original trilogy due to the other movies sucking. This is a fun, great calendar.

A throw back to 1977-83. Great calendar for any Star Wars fan!

I'll start this review with my subjective opinion of the book’s shortcomings:1. The author doesn’t mention using exercise as a technique against mind clutter.I know that exercising isn't a method to declutter your mind per se, but neither is gratitude journaling. And that was indicated as one of the ways you can deal with clutter in your head.I was surprised by this "omission", because I know that S.J. is a fitness nut (compared with to the majority of the population); this maniac runs marathons.Two advantages of exercising that come to mind off the top of my head: it reduces stress, and it provides you the time to think through your issues.Exercises were mentioned many times throughout the book, but never as a one of the main remedies against mind clutter.2. Divorcing to reduce mind clutter.I guess it's a cultural thing. My worldview doesn't include the possibility of divorce. Period. For me, this section of the book equated to the planning of murder in cold blood, while considering its pros and cons.Barrie and Steve were first to admit that "Letting go of any relationship is not a quick proposition", but they included this section in the book anyway. It sent some cold shivers down my spine.That’s a very short list of “shortcoming.” The list of benefits this book offers is much longer.Here’s a few I’ve highlighted:1. A wide range of ways to tackle "voices in your head" are described.Having now read about organizing your space to reduce "digital clutter", I agree it is a very sensible approach to reduce the number of impulses that stimulate your monkey brain. When the authors systematically explain how those things contribute to your mind clutter, it's obvious. However, I wouldn't have thought about this on my own.In addition, other sections made immediate perfect sense, like improving one's self-talk.2. There is detailed and methodical advice about the “voices in your head.”This topic does seem a little woo doesn’t it? Voices in Your Head. Yet I'm amazed how down-to-earth this book was for me. It's hard to explain without reading the content.To aptly illustrate the ease of applying the book's content: the day after reading it, I performed the "loving meditation" technique described inside.3. You can easily identify the parts which will be useful.I think this is the biggest strength of "Declutter Your Mind".Each piece of advice stands alone; a small part that can be taken and applied without reference to the rest. Each piece of instruction is clear and to the point. You will find little to no fluff in this book.Because of how separate parts of the book are organized, you can read the Table of Contents, open only the part that refers to your situation (e.g. you have problems with self-talk or relationships) take a few pearls from that part and immediately implement them.I've read the whole book only because I was interested how the authors tackled such a big and seemingly mysterious subject. But I could have had major benefit from reading only the part about relationships, as that is an area in which I experience some troubles.4. This book is written for the overwhelmed.I'm astounded how well "Declutter Your Mind" is organized. The instructions are highly detailed too.Considering the wide range of techniques and suggestions offered, it might be thought that a ‘cluttered mind’ would go into overload. Not so. At each step you receive detailed step-by-step advice on how to clean up untidiness in your head.You’ll find this book a treasure if you struggle with in-your-head noise. You’ll be armed with a whole arsenal of loaded anti-clutter weapons.5. There are many personal stories.This is why I love self-publishing. This book doesn’t preach theory, it illuminates good practice.Barrie and Steve struggled with these issues like any of us (and they still struggle occasionally), and they’ve shared their experience in a relatable way. Their stories make it easier to retain their lessons6. I identify with their methods.Mind clutter is an issue that spills into all areas of life. As an author and coach, I regularly prescribe many of the methods indicated in this book: gratitude journaling, writing things down, journaling and more. I know that they work; I’ve experienced this firsthand, and confidently vote for their approach.In summary: This book is a gem for people overwhelmed by the number of things they have to juggle on a daily basis (which seems like everyone on this whole crazy planet).You can take "Declutter Your Mind", target your problem areas and immediately apply the solutions given.Grab this book now: alleviate internal noise and stress in your life.

Updike's latest is an endlessly welcoming series of essays—every nonfiction piece he has published in the past eight years—offering Updike's characteristically reasoned perspective on a familiar range of subjects, including Old Masters artwork, literary biography and the history of the New Yorker. The heart of the book is Updike's literary criticism, characterized by a wide lens that summarizes a good portion of an author's output: this collection is invaluable for Updike's generous assessments of contemporaries such as Gabriel García Márquez, Orhan Pamuk and Alan Hollinghurst. Updike is still at his most vibrant when sexual politics are close at hand, and his summary undressing of David Allyn's history of the sexual revolution, Make Love, Not War, is brilliant in its mingling of personal and social history. As a collection, this is also notable for its high volume of occasional writing: book introductions, short speeches and responses to magazine requests, no matter how ephemeral, are all gathered to overwhelming effect. Updike is one of the few remaining true men of letters, the kind of writer who is equally at home in almost all forms and formats. Following two other staggeringly incisive, broad-ranging collections of his nonfiction prose, Odd Jobs (1991) and More Matter (1999), his latest such compilation is, like its predecessors, an elegant leviathan. Books, primarily, are the raison d'etre for these pieces; most are reviews, and most were previously published in Updike's favorite home-away-from-home, the New Yorker. As a critic, Updike has long demonstrated honesty, intelligence, judiciousness, open-mindedness, and never an ounce of superciliousness. For instance, what he writes about Margaret Atwood here is particularly perceptive (especially in his comparison of her to fellow Canadian Alice Munro), and his commentary on Michael Ondaatje's novel The English Patient may come as a surprise: that the movie version "elucidates the novel and was the clearer, more unified work." Other essays gathered here are of a more personal nature—that is, not geared to book reviewing or to introducing new editions of books. It's a heavy book. On the outside of it "Due Considerations" appears as one of those intimidating tomes that sit with stentorian authority on the shelves of academic potentates or literary agents, somewhat worshipped, and rarely opened. It can seem intimidating. One could be tempted to just hold it for a few minutes and savor its weightiness, reflecting on the fact of the treasure one bears: a voluminous collection of essays and criticisms by one of the most prolific and perspicacious men of letters of the twentieth century.Then open it, and something remarkable happens. Rather than being ushered into a rarefied world of abstract ideas and abstruse language, John Updike welcomes the reader into the warm room of his mind, filled with the rich furnishings of his intimate, personal reflections on the the genius of others. Anyone is welcome. All that's required of a reader of "Due Considerations" is a disposition of curiosity, and a passion for life.Within minutes you'll find yourself immersed. You can start anywhere--that's one of the many beauties of "Due Considerations". It seems there's not an author, breathing or otherwise, that Updike hasn't read and examined with thoughtful and affectionate precision. Melville, Thurber, Hawthorne, Baum, Beerbaum, English fiction, American fiction, biography, non-fiction, art, other languages--they're all here, spilling over each other despite the editor's obvious attempts to organize and categorize. Life, art, and language, seem, in Updike's loving hands, connected and continuous.And then there's EB White, and Orhan Pamuk, and Henry Petroski, and oh, yes, did I mention Fernanda Eberstadt? On the way, take a detour into the world of conceptual art, and the modern political situation in China. Updike may have lived a mere 76 years, but he's packed at least five centuries of human experience into his literary soul.For both serious and casual readers this makes "Due Considerations" a candy store. No doubt for everyone there are a few favorite authors examined here, and the chance to learn of many more. Old friends and new, Updike makes little distinction. He flings open doors on emerging and established artists like an engaging, eager host.Despite its disparate subjects, Updike's journeys through the human existence do have a central unifying theme, though even he seems reluctant to confront it directly. It's his quest for the spiritual, a longing for the existence and knowledge of God, which seems to compel him most completely, and which eludes him continually. In his exegesis of Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin" he opines "From the absoluteness of "me" a great deal of religious consolation can be spun. The self is pitted against the vast physical universe as if the two were equal." Is this a statement of fact in his mind, or a deep seated wish? Whichever, his search for the essence of humanity came a long way in his remarkable life, and did its part to move the human psyche closer towards parity with that elusive "absolute self."

The master speaks in this latest collection of what Updike calls his freelancing. What a pleasure to survey literature from his perspective. Beautiful language, fascinating views of technique in others' writings, and brilliant, poignant comments on so many times and places in the American experience. Like a modern day Hawthorne, or a latter day Edmund Wilson, we hear the master novelist review recent literature and the times with an extraordinary eye for the moral and aesthetic values of our literary times. As Updike knows full well, he's been lucky in his chosen profession; many are called but few are chosen to stay self-employed as fiction writers over such a long, illustrious career. Due Considerations is a compilation of various individual essays and articles published over a span of years and published in this volume shortly before John Updike's physical demise. I found many of the "stories" particularly revealing as to his own feelings of vulnerability in his later years after remarrying and, as always, most of the work it contains is reflective of a thoughtful, extremely articulate, and delightful delineator of the cultural milieu of his time and place.

Due Considerations is a heavyweight paperback, but chock full of essays and critiques by one of America's best writer, and my favorite.

John Updike may come to be regarded as a writer equal to, or greater in stature than Shakespeare. As a novelist he is incomparable, but it is as a literary critic that his unique talent bowls one over. This volume provides new insights into art and literature, from Bruegel to Proust. There is sheer joy in moving from the index to topic. It makes Google look second rate. Once you get hold of this book you'll want more. Updike, as ever, was obliging, and wrote "More Matter" - a New York times Notable Book. Order it at the same time. You'll never regret it.

This book is filled with sharp insights and lucid writing, always revealing something new and unexpected and thus enhancing my own appetite for knowing more about the world of literature and art and all the wondrous things they lead us to.
