I bought this book for a community college class. The author packs a lot of information in! The layout is easy to follow. The page edges are colored at the end of each chapter, which helps navigate the text. There are practice questions with answers, which have helped me study for the tests. The activities at the end of the chapters are relevant to a student in computer user support. There are a lot of internet links to additional information and resources, far more than I had time to inspect. A few that I followed had good information, though. I also used the author's pages a couple of times. Instead of including a code for the helpdesk activity in appendix B / chapter 6, the author found software that can be accessed on a free trial basis. I think this book could be useful as a self-study tool as well.

This isn't what you think it is. You won't learn anything about actually working as a user support agent at a help desk. If you think it's important to know about the 7 steps to prepare to load new software on a computer then jump right in, but there's nothing in here you couldn't intuit on your own or find very quickly with Google.

Book condition was poor, binding was off and glue was not holding pages. Rented so never used the software, but got charged to purchase. Information is common sense and as a reviewer states, there was no use for the book. It was not worth the price. As another reviewer states, would not deal with anything related to Cengage, and as another reviewer states, information is outdated and would prefer to give it no star.

I had to have this for my class. Renting on here saved me about 200 dollars from buying in school.If it wasn't a required textbook for a required class at NCTC to complete my associates i wouldn't have ordered it.The material isn't that great. Most of it is honestly common sense.

This book was used as a text book for my college course. I have been working in the IT industry for many years; however, the opportunity to get my degree has me back in the classroom.The book shows tremendous insight into the "behind the scenes" activities needed to provide good end-user computer support. It was well written and the author did a good job drawing contrast to the things that work and the things to do not.My only complaint is that some of the chapter questions are a bit subjective and in some cases the answers run contradictary to the chapter text. Even so, it is a great starting point for people that want to become computer support supecialist.SPECIAL THANKS to the publisher of the Kindle version of this book. Lessor publishers fail to include "Page Numbers" in the Kindle version and you only have "Location" numbers. Location numbers are useless if you are trying to assist (or get assistance) to/from someone with the physical print book.

NOT WORTH IT. BUT NEEDED IT FOR SCHOOL

I had to buy this for a college course. It comes with a program that teaches you how to make customer service tickets... if you've ever worked in any kind of phone support/call center you will already know how to do this.

Bought this as it was required reading for a college course. Very well written and gives thorough insights in to the operation of help desks and the processes used to develop training materials.

Even though Singleton's companion book "Film Scheduling" is essential to learn how to breakdown a script and "Film Budgeting" might have seamlessly taken me step by step from schedule to budget. The Devil, as they say, is in the details. This is a detailed look at how to do a budget for producing a film or video. And the level of detail covered is amazing. For instance there is a short paragraph on feeding your cast and crew. It says, 'On low-budget shows, if you don't have enough people to warrant hiring a caterer, pass around the menu from a good local restaurant. Or, if it's tighter than that, say for a student film, order in a pizza.'Then there are the budgets. It starts with a budget for a $5 Million Feature Film project. It lists seventeen pages of budget items that include just about everything you can think of to include in a budget. From there it goes down to a $12,000 sample budget for a student film.These budgets are discussed here with explanations of what goes into each line item. Then the budgets themselves are available for down loading in Excel format. You can take in the budget and then modify it as needed to fit your own needs. Just the sample budgets are enough to make this book worthwhile, if they keep you from forgetting some critical item it could make the difference in getting the production done or not. The explanations of the line items in the budget clearly describe what each of these mean and how they might fit into your project.The book clearly shows that these people have been working on budgeting for such productions for a long time. They simply have the ring of 'been there, done that.'

When I began reading Whale Talk, I thought I would be reading a story about a teenager struggling to put together a swim team at his very athletically-driven high school (as suggested by the synopsis). What I ended up reading, however, was a story about perseverance, acceptance, tolerance, love, and sacrifice.Crutcher's protagonist, T.J. Jones, is a rare gem of a character. Having survived an early childhood of neglect and being the target of racism in his mostly white school, T.J. has plenty of reasons to be angry. However, he remains stoic in the face of adversity, refusing to rise to the racial taunts of his enemies. In fact, what makes him such a wonderful character is that his indignation and sense of justice are not reserved for himself but for others who fall outside the scope of the "in" crowd. His effort to put together a swim team is driven by an injustice he witnesses towards another classmate. In a school driven by athletics, he walks a precarious slope with the individuals on his team who fit plenty of categories--mentally challenged, handicapped, mute, overweight--except athletic. Still, T.J.'s drive and determination help whip this group of misfits into a competitive swim team in no time flat.Of course, from the arc of the swim team come many other compelling story lines--abuse, death, racism, and forgiveness. Crutcher seamlessly weaves these threads into the story by putting T.J. front and center. By witnessing and even participating in other characters' difficulties--the racial abuse inflicted upon a five-year-old girl of mixed race, the tragedy of his father's past, the sexual abuse suffered by one of his teammates--T.J. is better able to put his own life into perspective with guidance from his loving adoptive parents and his therapist.Although the last 20 pages or so stray into melodrama, this book is powerful on so many levels. Images--the deer, the Brillo pad--will stay with the reader long after the book has been closed. At the core of its message is the idea that no one really knows what difficulties others are facing, a poignant message given the times we live in.

Great book. Especially pertinent for this time when we seem to see issues of tolerance all over the place. I am 56 and loved it, and I think jr high and high schoolers would enjoy it. Some bad language, but nothing kids haven’t heard... and they know they have to decide whether that will be part of who they want to be or not.

Growing up is not an easy assignment, high school is not always comfortable and w adults sometimes forget what happens there. A wonderful book, by a fantastic author. Forgiveness is a skill that many of us try to learn, but do not always make the grade.

My 13 year old had to read this for Summer reading. He loved the pace and level of language. This is the first book in a while that he actually engaged enough to be upset with the ending and able to articulate why

This is a story about a mixed race kid, supposedly. In truth it is about the family and town he grew up in. Grow he did. Well written.
