I adore Workman's 365 Cats Page-A-Day Calendar. I've been buying it since the photos were in black and white. The stories underneath each cat(s) are more in depth than ever, and I adore the pithy sayings attributed to both famous and unknown folks. I wouldn't be without this calendar. My boyfriend adores it, too. And we recycle the papers by using them for grocery lists and notes. The cats are the stars, though, and I can't imagine not buying next year's calendar.

My sister loves this desk calendar and gets it every year. She just discovered that there are 2 weeks missing for this month, Oct. 2 through 15. Instead of pages for these dates in Oct., there were pages that repeated the last 2 weeks of Sept. If we had discovered this when we bought it last year, we would have returned it for a new one (and would have checked that the replacement had all the pages). She still loves the calendar, but will be sure to check 2019's calendar. I deducted a star for the missing pages.

Great Calendar but this is the second year in a row the stack of pages fell off the red plastic backing! It seems the glue is different than in years past. I have purchased this calendar for many years now and they are not as sturdy as they used to be! Go back to the old glue.

my wife and I love cats. we have three that we care for. We've always enjoyed having Cat Calendars in the house. This style 365 Cats Page-A-Day is well worth the money. We both love the information they provide on each days cat calendar day. the tidbits often tell about the type of cat or the name of the cat and where they are from. It's a joy to see beautiful animals everyday. Quite often we save the different pages in a scrapbook, so the value of the images is cherished for years to come.

This is a very fun calendar. The photos are sent in by viewers, so the quality of each image varies. The paper is not the best, and the printing is not the best, but it is a good value for the price. There are other daily calendars with higher quality images printed on higher quality paper. And I like how it is printed single sided, so I can reuse the pages as scrap paper.

I give out a few of these calendars to my cat-friendly relatives and friends. The calendar includes a plastic base that snaps into an angled viewing position. It's always fun to tear off yesterday's page and see today's cat. Our daughter, a school bus driver, hands out the day's cat to a lucky kid on the bus. The only suggestion I have for Workman would be to have one cat for each day of the year, instead of weekend pages with two cats.

I am a grown, adult person but last year my parents gave me this for Christmas. I put it in my classroom for lack of a better place to keep it. Well, my high school physics students love it, and we all oooo and awww over the adorable cats each day. It has become A Thing in my classroom and I'll be buying a new one each year from now on.

I buy this desk Calendar each year as a gift for a relative at Christmas. She loves it. The photos are adorable. Let’s you enjoy kitties without the hassle of a litter box and clawed furniture! 😉

Buyer beware! If you buy the kindle version, the only color picture is the front cover. From reading the reviews I was led to believe that there were at least 15 of the pictures represented in color on the cover. Perhaps the inside cover or back? Well they did not show these on the kindle version. From just looking at the black and white pictures, it is nearly impossible to know what color goes where. I wish I had not wasted my money on this book.

I like to do illuminations but I'm always looking for fresh ideas. This book is a great source of inspiration for new ideas.

These are what I would call a bit advanced because of all the pieces. Very nice book.

good patterns but really small imo for these detailed images. Some patterns are not quite complete if you look closely enough.

loved it - great for creating your own

So pretty!

These pages are not the vellum type you would think when you see the words, stained glass. These are just coloring pages. Now, that said, the paper quality used here is very nice and bright white. Your colors should stand out nicely.Connie Eaton is there for artist credit and she has done such a phenomenal job in creating these beautiful scenes. I've been out of school for many years now. Many times I have wanted to go back to college and take classes, but I don't think it would be a good decision at this stage in my life. I love this book because it challenges one to educate themselves. It not only inspires, but also gives one the how-to. I can't recommend it enough!

...until now. I have found this a very helpful tool to fill in some of the gaps in my education. Well written, good suggested reading lists for each of the genres covered. I have not completed this book totally, but have done enough work to know that it is well worth the effort and time.

If you believe that "some books are to be tasted, others swallowed, and some to be chewed and digested", then I suspect you will enjoy this book. I found it extremely helpful in laying out a well thought out process for the 'chewing and digestion' of some of the more difficult texts.

This book is a nice guide for broadening and deepening your reading variety. I used it to push myself into reading items I would have ignored. I like the authors suggestions for keeping notes on your reading. It has helped me not only understand more deeply but allowed me to review parts of the reading I had forgotten by the time I'd finishted the work. I recommend this book for anyone looking to expand and grow.

The Well-Educated Mind does a wonderful job of explaining how to go about reading with a purpose in an approachable and non-pretentious way. And by books, I mean not just any books, but some of The Great Books (key impressive music); which to some like myself, may be slightly intimidating if you are a decade (or two) out of university. (And never got around to reading any of these books while in said university). The author's approach is very straight forward, but her writing is anything but dry. She gives practical ways to break the books (which are addressed by genre in different chapters) into digestible chunks which make tackling these works perhaps more approachable than they are without a class syllabus, facilitator, or general plan. I am happy to have found this book and would definitely recommend for anyone looking to expand their horizons and library with some of the "greats". It's never too late to read!

I am only just getting into this book and I must say, Mrs. Bauer know's exactly what she is talking about. About to toot my own horn, but I can see that Bauer has her finger on what it takes to not only have a well-educated mind but also a refined one - an invaluable trait that all of us should aspire to embody. If you are interested in becoming a more refined and enlightened person, this book is for you. If you have zero appreciation for that, then you should go watch an episode of The Kardashians right now!

So helpful for homeschooling. My go to manual.( And my oldest just got a full ride to a very prestigious university.)

This book is ideal for anyone interested in reading and truly understanding great works of literature. It is perfect for anyone who is hard wired for a regimented system. I managed to do quite well getting through college without really ever reading and understanding the texts I was required to read, as an adult I wanted to try to read these texts and actually appreciate them. I concluded that perhaps though my comprehension was fine, my critical approach needed revising. I picked this book up because I was not quite ready to read the rather large "how to read a book" by Adler. I have since read both books and this one in my opinion, is a little easier to read. I. Recommend reading this first, then Adler's book after.I like "well educated mind" because it provides a system, and part of that is that she provides questions you should be answering on your various reads specific to each genre. This is immediately helpful in making sure you are doing more than just reading but actually engaging the text. She provides a system of journal writing that I have found quite helpful and now use for every book I read. Too many times I plowed through a great work and afterward had literarily no idea or appreciation for what I just read, this book was perfect to get me to truly understand great works.

How much sex are people really having?  How many Americans are actually racist? Is America experiencing a hidden back-alley abortion crisis? Can you game the stock market? Does violent entertainment increase the rate of violent crime? Do parents treat sons differently from daughters?   How many people actually read the books they buy?In this groundbreaking work, Seth Stephens-Davidowitz, a Harvard-trained economist, former Google data scientist, and New York Times writer, argues that much of what we thought about people has been dead wrong. The reason?  People lie, to friends, lovers, doctors, surveys—and themselves. However, we no longer need to rely on what people tell us. New data from the internet—the traces of information that billions of people leave on Google, social media, dating, and even pornography sites—finally reveals the truth. By analyzing this digital goldmine, we can now learn what people really think, what they really want, and what they really do. Sometimes the new data will make you laugh out loud. Sometimes the new data will shock you.  Sometimes the new data will deeply disturb you.  But, always, this new data will make you think. Everybody Lies combines the informed analysis of Nate Silver’s The Signal and the Noise, the storytelling of Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers, and the wit and fun of Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner’s Freakonomics in a book that will change the way you view the world. There is almost no limit to what can be learned about human nature from Big Data—provided, that is, you ask the right questions.

The basic thesis of "Everybody Lies" is that online data on human behavior, including Google searches and data from Facebook, shopping and pornographic sites, can reveal much about what we really think than data from surveys in which people might be too embarrassed to tell the truth. In our unguarded moments, when we are alone and searching Google in the privacy of our homes, we are much more likely to divulge our innermost desires. The premise is that truly understanding human behavior by way of psychology or neuroscience is too complicated right now, so it's much better to simply bypass that kind of understanding and look at what the numbers are telling us in terms of what people's online behavior. In doing this the author looks at a remarkable variety of online sources and studies by leading researchers, and one must congratulate him for the diversity and depth of material he has plumbed. What has allowed us to access this pool of unguarded opinions and truckloads of data concerning human behavior is the Internet and the tools of "big" data. As the author puts it, this data is not just "big" but also "new", which means that the kind of data we can access is also quite different from what we are used to; in his words, we live in a world where every sneeze, cough, internet purchase, political opinion, and evening run can be considered "data". This makes it possible to test hypotheses that we could not have tested before. For instance, the author gives the example of testing Freud's Oedipus Complex through accessing pornographic data which indicates a measurable interest in incest. Generally speaking there is quite an emphasis on exploring human sexuality in the book, partly because sexuality is one of those aspects of our life that we wish to hide the most and are also pruriently interested in, and partly because investigating this data through Google searches and pornographic sites reveals some rather bizarre sexual preference that are also sometimes specific to one country or another. This is a somewhat fun use of data mining.Data exploration can both reveal the obvious as well as throw up unexpected observations. A more serious use of data tools concerns political opinions. Based on Google searches in particular states, the author shows how racism (as indicated by racist Google searches) was a primary indicator of which states voted for Obama in the 2008 election and Trump in the 2016 election. That's possibly an obvious conclusion, at least in retrospect. A more counterintuitive conclusion is that the racism divide does not seem to map neatly on the urban-rural divide or the North-South divide, but rather on the East-West divide; people seem to be searching much more for explicitly racist things in the East compared to the West. There is also an interesting survey of gay people in more and less tolerant states which concludes that you are as likely to find gay people in both parts of the country. Another interesting section of the book talked about how calls for peace by politicians after terrorist attacks actually lead to more rather than less xenophobic Google searches; this is accompanied by a section that hints at how the trends can be potentially reversed if different words are used in political speeches. There is also an interesting discussion of how the belief that newspaper political leanings drive customer political preferences gets it exactly backward; the data shows that customer political preferences shape what newspapers print, so effectively they are doing nothing different from any other customer-focused, profit making organization. The primary tool for doing all this data analysis is correlation or regression analysis, where you look at online searches and try to find correlations between certain terms and factors like geographic location, gender, ethnicity. One hopes that one has separated the most important correlated variable and has eliminated other potentially important ones. There are tons of other amusing and informative studies - sometimes the author's own but more often other people's - that reveal human desires and behavior across a wide swathe of fields, including politics, dating, sports, education, shopping and sexuality. There's plenty of potentially useful material in these studies. For instance, some of the data that indicates gaps in educational or social attainment in different parts of the country are immediately actionable in principle. Google searches have also been used to keep track of flu and other disease epidemics. Sometimes finding correlations is financially lucrative; there is a story about how a horse expert found that success in horse races seems to correlate with one factor more than any other: the size of the left ventricle. Another study isolated the impact of the early growing season on the quality of wines. There is no doubt that financial firms, supermarkets, newspapers, hospitals and online purveyors of everything from pornography to peanuts are going to keep a close eye on this data to maximize their reach and profits.Generally speaking I enjoyed "Everybody Lies"; for the scope of the material, the easy-going style and some of the counterintuitive observations it reveals. My main reservation about the book is that I think the author overstates his case and sometimes sounds a little too breathless about the great changes these tools are going to bring. More than once he uses the term "revolutionary" in describing these data tools, but I am much more suspicious of their ultimate utility. Firstly, data does not equal knowledge; rather, it is the raw material for knowledge. As the author himself acknowledges, understanding correlation is not the same as understanding causation, and it's in very few cases that a true causal relationship between people's Google searches and their true nature can be established. Part of the reason I think this way is because I don't believe that a person's Google search is as reflective of their innermost desires as the book seems to think, so what a person truly believes may go way beyond their online behavior. Consider the studies revealing people's sexual preferences for instance; how many of them point to trivial idiosyncrasies and how many are indicative of some deeper truth about human brains? The tools alone cannot draw this distinction. At the end of the day you could thus end up with a lot of data (including a lot of noise), but teasing apart the useful data points from the red herrings is a completely different matter. In this sense, looking at Google searches and other information can be a reductionist and simplistic approach.Secondly, it's usually quite hard to control for all possible variables that may reflect a Google search; for instance in concluding that racism contributes the most to a particular political behavior, it's very hard to tease out all other factors that also may do so, especially when you are talking about a heterogeneous collection of human beings. How can you know that you have corrected for every possible factor? Thirdly and finally, the "science" part of "data science" still lacks rigor in my opinion. For instance, a lot of the conclusions the book talks about are based on single studies which don't seem to be repeated. In some cases the sample sizes are large, but in other cases they are small. Plus, people's opinions can change over time, so it's important to pick the right time window in which to do the study. All this points to great responsibility on the part of data scientists to make sure that their results are rigorous and not too simplistic, before they are taken up by both politicians and the general public as blunt instruments to change social policies. This responsibility increases especially as these approaches become more widespread and cheaper to use, especially in the hands of non-specialists. When you are in possession of a hammer, everything starts looking like a nail.Considering all these caveats, I thus find tools like those described in this volume to be the starting points for understanding human behavior, rather than direct determinants of human behavior. The tools themselves can tell you what they can be used for, not necessarily what problems would benefit the most from their application. The many interesting studies in this book certainly answer the "what" quite well, but most of them are still quite far from answering the "how" and especially the "why". They point out the path to the door, but don't necessarily tell us which door to open. And they can be especially impoverished in illuminating what lies beyond; for that only a true understanding of the human mind will pave the way.

This could be the start of a joke: Economist walks into a room, full of people who have already worked in this field for years, disregards everyone and...Only it isn't a joke. The author of this book is an economist and a NY Times author. He describes the use of Internet data, especially aggregated Google searches, for social science. In this, the book is very good. That is, if you've never heard of the idea of using these data for research, this might be a book for you. However, people have worked for several years on these data, and have much deeper, more interesting insights than Seth SD. Indeed, he seems ignorant of their work, which is a pity, because it's so much better than the work he describes. For example, Google Flu was preceded by the work of Polgreen and (independently) Eysenbach. Tracking events from Internet searches was previously done by Backstrom (2008), etc. Indeed, there is an entire academic conference (WSDM) devoted to the use of internet data.It is as if a medical doctor would write a book about the effect of drug prices on consumption, ignoring all that's known in economics. Sure, it might be interesting, but it's probably going to contain a whole lot of errors and obvious stuff. The same happens in this book. Thus, there are better books about many of the subjects described in the book, including "A billion wicked thoughts", "Dataclysm", and the recent "Crowdsourced health".Additionally, and perhaps to make the book more readable, the author makes some mistakes which will be painful for anyone with an understanding of statistics. For example, the coefficients in regression don't show causality, only correlation. In summary, if you've never heard of this idea, by all means read the book, but with caution. Otherwise, better books exist.

I read it in two days. It is an easy and fun read even for the general reader.“Everybody Lies” is a fascinating dive into the world of “Big Data”. The core premise of the book is that by mining large data sets we can answer questions more accurately than through other methods. Behavioral and psychological questions can be addressed without the filter of a poll or questionnaire, where “everybody lies”. Thus, in theory, we capture a more accurate representation of people’s real prejudices and desires through big data searches than through polling.Seth Stephens-Davidowitz uses quirky and often humorous examples to show the power of big data. One example from the book revealed that I was one of the 7% who finished “Thinking, Fast and Slow” (I am not sure whether that is a good or bad thing). The data is the data, but the interpretation is subjective. My concern is that the subjective conclusions drawn from the data will be presented as fact rather than what they are – subjective interpretations of the data (however statistically significant). As such, there is a danger that such information will be misused. We still need to be cautious in determining the meaning of the data.Seth Stephens-Davidowitz brings the topic to life with terrific story telling about a wide number of subjects. The author has performed a great service by making this very important topic comprehensible to “the rest of us”.

Heard the author interviewed on the radio & thought the premise was awesome. I love social science studies like this and was eager to read it until I learned very quickly that the message was that Trump votes and racism were correlated and that's mainly why Trump won? Returned promptly.

Very poor, no scientific approach applied. If you want to see confirmation bias at work I would recommend this book, otherwise don't waste your money.

Of all the books and materials I've read on MRI, Mr. Faulkner's small book is the best written on understanding the key components to MRI. It is invaluable to someone who desires to understand the basic physics and is the single best foundation for a technologist to build on. It also seemed to dovetail with ARRT's perspective in my Board Exam. If a tech had only one book to reference as he/she trains clinically, this would be it, in my opinion. I also attended Mr. Faulkner's MRI class in Chattanooga, TN where he gives monthly seminar and a week's review and it is the best 5 day seminar on MRI possible. If you read this book first and prepare questions for the seminar, you are 99% likely to come away with a highly expert understanding. If you have been out of MRI for a long time and need to review to get back up to speed, this book is the answer to that need. He wrote it for the ages. The basic physics will always apply as the technology advances. It is a tribute to love and understanding of MRI. Absolute Kudos.

A lot of the mri techs i am working with recommended this book. It helps explain thing much better then some of the books i was using

Great study resource. Easy to read and follow. Would have not passed my registry without this valuable pocket book. Highly recommended along with having an MRIQUIZ.com account.

Easy to read and understand as far as physics go. Confusing typo's in several spots. There was author contact info and I did contact the author to clarify what I felt was a typo that stumped me. He immediately (within hours) contacted me and was very nice, polite and helpful. I also took a course in Las Vegas from this author. Made a very dry subject as interesting as anyone could possibly make it. I passed my MRI exam with a 90%. Thank you Mr. Faulkner.

I did not attend an MRI school. I read this book twice and studied the registry outline provided by the AART. I passed the registry with an A.

Excellent price. Shipped fast.

an excellent tool to use to revise for the MRI boards. However you will still need other text books as well but this one focuses on the physics that will almost surely come on the exam paper.

Studied the book. No help with the Big Test.Extremely disappointed.

Book Description

This 1954 book focuses on the application of Hamilton's optical method to variational principles in space-time. Professor J. L. Synge here uses this method to generate a completely relativistic theory of de Broglie waves: a theory both simple and easily visualised in relation to space-time.

J.L.Synge is a great applied mathematician who knows more about physics than physicists themselves. This book is a nice development of relativistic quantum mechanics from a generalization of Hamilton's principle. I highly recommend all of Synge's books. He understands what modern physics is all about. Get his Relativity Theory series after mastering this book. His works read like poetry

Review

"A dazzling book about the best bivalves of our time." --Wall Street Journal                  "This verbally and visually succulent book covers 99 types of oysters, most from the shores of North America... The author's appreciation of even the least prepossessing of these bivalves is infectious. Jacobsen makes the case that 'every oyster is a tide pool in miniature, a poem built of salt water and phytoplankton that nods to whatever motes of meaning shaped it.' East Beach Blondes, farmed in Rhode Island, taste like 'brine and ozone; a boardwalk in the rain'; Maine's wild-harvested Belons remind him of 'hazelnuts and anchovies fried in seal fat, with a squishy crunch like jellyfish salad.' In terms of presence, New Brunswick's Beausoleils are 'as clean and inoffensive as a Jehovah's Witness," and wild James River specimens have "oversized muscles and a pale potbelly, like an aging professional wrestler.' Jacobsen may leave noncoastal readers drooling with jealousy, but vicarious oyster slurping is better than none." --Kirkus Reviews"An in-depth guide that is also a highly enjoyable read...Humorous, crafty, and deeply informative." --Publisher's Weekly (starred review)"A remarkable, essential addition to any food collection." --Booklist (starred review)

Oyster farming has brought the lowly oyster from near-extinction to new status as a farm-to-table commodity in high demand among the cognoscenti. Rowan Jaconsen is a passionate oyster lover who writes with the soul of a poet. Think of The Essential Oyster as his insider's guide to the oysters of all North America's coasts, not to mention a handful of others. With flair, grace and elegance, his book surveys the world of oysters and oystering, focusing on what consumers crave: tasting notes, backstories, and an oyster conoisseur's guide to merroir (the oyster world's equivalent to terroir from the wine world), so influential in the essence of each oyster. If you love oysters or want to learn more about the art, science and tasting of these bivalves, this is your book--and you couldn't have a better-informed or more enthusiatic guide.

If you are thinking about buying this book enough to read this review, buy it! You cannot be disappointed when it arrives. Do you want to learn how to eat an oyster (cocktail sauce? plain?) Do you want recipes that will make you grab a beer and start cooking? Do you want photographs that will amaze you with the astounding variety and beauty of nature (the world in a grain of sand, the Mona Lisa in an oyster shell)? And mostly, do you want some of the best thinking and writing about food and nature you'll come across this year? If you even think you might be interested in any of these, buy this book!

Excellent reviews of a good number of oysters. We've been taking it with us when we go out for oysters...we may look like goons, but soon we'll better understand what are likes and dislikes are. The photos and useful information make selecting tasty oysters an easier process now.

Excellent descriptive review of the North American oyster scene. I bought a companion called The Connoisseurs Guide. This tome is equally effusive but has better illustrations. Also briefly covers other bivalves around the world, in addition to the 90 plus examples from the five categories of oysters. He covers each with type (Pacific, Eastern, Kumo, etc) and describes the methods of farming and harvesting. This, along with the aforementioned, provide all you need to know about NA oysters. By the way, both books contain glossaries of oyster joints, although this one omits Boston’s Union Oyster House, which is perplexing.

Great book for all oyster lovers. I did not know that there were that many variety of oysters. Beautifully illustrated. I recommend to anyone wanting to better understand this succulent bivale.

Must read especially for oyster lovers and growers

This was given as a birthday gift to my BIL along with an oyster knife. He loved it.

Fantastically written with detailed accounts of each of the world's best oysters. Beautiful layout with historical information, great photography, and comprehensive accounts of each of the oysters addressed.
