Dr. Sokyo Ono's "Shinto: The Kami Way" is the best overview of Shinto I have ever read, and I've read a LOT of books on the religions of Japan over the past thirty years! William Woodard's translation is very readable. Perhaps most helpful is Ono Sensei's comparison-contrast between Japanese understanding of seven-fold nature of Kami and Western understandings of God. I also found especially interesting the focus on purification. I have recommended and given copies of this book to many people through the years. The Kindle version I recently purchased is helpful because it won't disappear from my office library!

It’s a good book, but it mainly focuses on the political and cultural aspect of Shinto. The translation is not great, although everything can be understood, one can see that’s is quite a literal translation. And what I thought was missing is the mystical aspect of shinto, more spiritual an belief part of the religion.

Good introduction to the concepts, or rather the seeming unclarity (?"ambiguity") that surrounds the concepts of Shinto (practitioners would dispute this interpretation of unclarity....such is the nature of 'faith') I came away thinking Kami means many different things to many different Japanese, and at multiple levels of of private and public life. Apparently there isn't a monolithic interpretation, or even notional/national orthodoxy that can apply to all. My initial and misconstrued past conception was that it was animism, but the system is unique to Japanese thinking.Apparently, there is no ancient codex (bible) to base on, its evolutionary past is complicated, But through reading this , I think I discern at play are the the underlying universal human motivations and needs.....that of community (of belief), native tribal identity, belief in a transcendent other world and need to subordinate oneself/appease/respect/worship/acknowledge dependence on ..... something/someone more spiritual in nature. In that sense it is no different to other religions. The manifestations as enunciated in the book, however, make an interesting read.

As someone who is interested in all things Japanese, I was really excited to read Dr. Sokyo Ono's Shinto: The Kami Way. This book is held as the standard introduction to Shinto for Western readers, and for the most part, I wasn't disappointed. The author, a recognized expert on the subject, presents Shinto to the reader in plain, simple language. The bare essentials of Shinto are explored, including the architecture and layout of Shinto shrines and the rituals and festivals that are celebrated within. Unfortunately, I was seeking a more philosophical discussion of Shinto, and the author really only includes a short chapter in the back of the book that delves into the actual beliefs of Shinto. Still, the influence of Shinto on the daily life of the Japanese is addressed throughout the book and gives Western readers a glimpse into the way the Japanese have evolved along with their indigenous beliefs. I would recommend this book to all readers interested in world religions and philosophies. This is definitely a must-read for anyone who hopes to understand the Japanese people even a little bit.

Great book. It's very informative as to the Shinto religion of Japan. I learned a lot from reading it and would recommend it to others looking to expand their knowledge of this fascinating religion. The author touches on various aspects of Shinto, but seems to prefer talking about shrines and how they operate.

I am enjoying this book and learning a lot. Well written and very good with explanation if one is interested in Shintoism.

VERY informative. I learned a lot. However, the writing style is fairly stilted. Reads a lot like a textbook. Of course, it is not a novel, so....

Wonderfully written text to learn about this ancient Japanese religion.

Great review of Internal Medicine that actually makes you think about what you would do for that patient rather than just bullet points. I like that it doesn't always give you every bit of information you need and makes you narrow/confirm your ddx with further tests. Much more clinically useful than reading review books that are usually exam focused.

Used it to study for PA-S end of rotation exams and it was a fantastic book! it had everything I needed to know. I would highly recommend it to any PA-S out there looking for a way to steady for EORs.

Hits the bread and butter medicine. Gives you great scope of what is important for medical school knowledge level. Will help you confidently select the next step in the treatment algorithm during the exam. Every clerkship that I use case files to augment UWorld, I ace the shelf.

The Case Files series have been the mainstay of my study routine for my junior clerkships in medical school. But this one has SOOOO many typos that it makes me question the validity of the content. It is peppered with misspelled words, unfinished sentences, there's one spot where the author actually left a note to himself to look up whether or not a comma was used appropriately. It's like the rough draft went into publication. I plan on continuing to use Case Files, but I'm pretty disappointed with this one.

Excellent. Must Have

Everyone loves this series. I only liked the ob one. This is too wordy and seems a little out of order in terms of how they present things.

Great reference

I use this book for my class in medical school

#21,312 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

For me, Robert Kurson's latest brilliant narrative nonfiction is not just a behind-the-scenes exploration of NASA, nor even of the nip-and-tuck race between the Americans and Russians to be the first to explore the moon, but rather a journey into the hearts and minds of three extraordinary individuals, and in so doing, into our own. Kurson has taken his readers on both underwater and space adventures, all with riveting and compelling style. But as I read Rocket Men, I realized that the real journey Kurson was taking us on, perhaps even unwittingly, was into our own subconscious--into the question of what makes us all, in some measure or another, strive to explore against all odds of success, and often at great sacrifice, unchartered terrains. As I learned about Borman, Lovell and Anders, and their bravery, determination and devotion, I was left wondering what I would sacrifice for the chance to see my world from the outside looking in, and whether I would ultimately have the courage to do so.

Robert Kurson is a master storyteller. In "Rocket Men," he tells the story of the Apollo 8 mission, the first spacecraft to approach the Moon as well as to disappear behind it. This adventure tale reads like something the reader is learning about first-hand. I felt intimately connected to the personalities, the events, the most dramatic moments, and the risk and historic weight of the undertaking. Kurson has figured out just the right balance between amazingly detailed research and a seamless story that never feels stitched together out of hundreds of accounts, documents, etc.If you're not highly familiar with narratives about the space program, you will be amazed at this fascinating world. It's a combination of (1) world geopolitical supremacy on the line, (2) the most advanced science in existence, (3) levels of unprecedented personal risk in the name of country-science-exploration, and (4) the rare kinds of people who become astronauts, live with being married to them, and are responsible for the decisions that determine the astronauts' fate. This is storytelling on a par with Tom Wolfe's "The Right Stuff," a masterpiece of narrative nonfiction about the earlier phase of the space program. And if you have read books in this genre, you're in for a lot of surprises. (No spoilers here.) It's easy to imagine some drama out of the story of Apollo 11 (the first Moon landing) and Apollo 13 ("Houston, we have a problem ....") or the Challenger and Columbia space shuttle disasters. But this story proves the point that, from the perspective of what's going on IN THE STORY, every one of these missions was high on drama. Kurson's telling of this story makes a compelling argument – even if you don't agree with it, it makes wonderful reading – that Apollo 8 involved unprecedented stakes in the Space Race and the Cold War, and an unprecedented leap in risk combined with an uncharacteristic rush by NASA to put leapfrogging the USSR above caution."Rocket Men" is a story of an American triumph at a difficult moment in history. Appropriately, it's also a storytelling triumph.

When I started this book, I thought, oh boy, this is just a rehash of The Right Stuff and Apollo 13. I’m so glad I stuck with it. The story of the science and personalities involved in this mission is mesmerizing.“Telegrams for the astronauts poured in by the thousands. One, however, stood out from the rest. It came not from a world leader or celebrity or other luminary, but from an anonymous stranger. It had traveled over whites-only lunch counters in the South, through jungles in Vietnam where young men fell, over the coffins of two of the America’s great civil rights leaders. It had blown across streets bloodied by protesters and police, past a segregationist presidential campaign, into radios playing songs of alienation and revolt. It had made its way through ten million American souls who didn’t have enough to eat, alongside generations that no longer trusted each other, into a White House where a no-longer-loved president slept. It read: THANKS. YOU SAVED 1968.”

Robert Kurson's excellent look at the 1968 voyage of Apollo 8, "Rocket Men: The Daring Odyssey of Apollo 8", has already received excellent reviews on Amazon, so I can add very little. However, I will say that the writing is low-key but compelling as Kurson writes about the politics, the people, and the history of the United States space program. He also details the race - what we knew was happening - between the US and the USSR. The Soviet launch of a moon rocket forced the United States to put forward the Apollo 8 flight well before schedule, so we could go to the moon and circle it. Not actually land - that came later - but to circle it. Even though I know the turnout, I really kept expecting things to fail spectacularly. This is a book for any armchair historian and/or science junkie. I also think it would make a great Audible book and I've already preordered the Audible version at the good price of $14.

I just finished “Rocket Men”. It is a rare thing for me to sit and read a book in a few days but that is what I did with this wonderful book. I have read a lot of books about the space program and even about Apollo 8 to the point that I was not finding anything new or interesting anymore. However, "Rocket Men" is like a whole new story of Apollo 8 and I especially loved the new things I learned from it such as the story behind the picture of the execution from Vietnam, Bobby Kennedy, and other such tidbits that spiced up the adventure of Apollo 8. Telling the story of the three wives was intriguing. I had never read about Lovell’s mistake with the navigation. After all the space books I have read I can honestly say that this is absolutely one of the very best ever produced.

Review

Compelling, energetic, [and] highly readable.--Alan NadelOne of the most important books ever on the social construction of the notion that there is a white race. "[I]ntriguing and well researched. This is an important addition to the nascent academic field of whiteness studies, which examines the social construction of whiteness with particular attention to the American experience. It should be read by all historians and anyone with an interest in cultural studies. I have to admit that I was skeptical of such a book and didn't believe it would teach me much that I didn't already know. I have a pretty good background in history, especially western civilization, from classical Greece to modern U.S. history. I have been a skeptic on the subject of race almost since I left high school. But Nell Painter won me over almost from the first page of this remarkable book. She did her homework, and she knows how to tell a story. She shows that notions of race are both ancient and also socially and culturally constructed. She also reveals how this conception of a "white" race emerges and becomes so important in Europe and the U.S. She reveals the silliness of race science but also places it in historical context that helps readers understand why otherwise intelligent individuals might be seduced by such notions as skull measurements, cranial capacity, skin tone, facial features, intellectual capacities, etc. She demonstrates how famous and respected figures likeThomas Carlyle and Ralph Waldo Emerson were seduces by a common desperate desire to be on the superior side of a perceived "racial" and class divide, and how someone like Franz Boas could stray from the received opinions of his day when the evidence became less and less convincing. In short, the book is an education in a subject that many of us thought we knew something about. This really is a fresh look at race and notions of "whiteness" that deserves a wide audience, and it looks like that's what's happening. First you have to understand how something came about before you can really see how truly disturbing and misguided it is. She might have called her book the myth of white people, but that would have given away too much of the payoff of discovering all the foolishness that lies behind the very conception of a "white" race of humans.

The text explains, in detail, American policies and practices in regard to volunteer immigrants from (what I considered) white countries. Nell Painter reveals the deep research she conducted of this history (white people in America) in a way that reads almost like a novel. As such, it allows self-educators to benefit from traceable truth (not opinion) that was previously available only to researchers, academics, or the oral histories of the specific groups discussed.

This is a dense read, and it's important to remain aware that the book is ultimately about whiteness in the US. If you aren't in it for the long haul, don't start it. Even as a lover of history, geography, and politics (all discussed in this book), my mind would get overwhelmed and I'd have to take breaks. Chapter 27 is OVERWHELMINGLY relevant to the last 10 or so years of racisl justice fights, and is certainly still relevant. After that chapter, the last few seem to be a little rushed or incomplete (likely because she is speaking about the present). It ends with looking forward, and assumptions people have made about the future of the United States as it becomes more brown, but doesn't give the concluding feeling that people generally want from a book. This should honestly be treated like a textbook, and be included in curricula.

This careful, scholarly, proBlack book tears up the poison that whiteness inflicts on Black Women's lives. Is painful necesary work in this struggle to remove whiteness, and its genociding, from our daily lives and future.Love

Well-written history of the social construct of race and its impact on throughout our short US history. If you read one book this year... this is the one!

What's most important to know can be summed up in the author's YouTube lecture, 'Why are white people called Caucasians?' She delves into the history of identity more than their travail from antiquity. Which seems to be a more palatable approach for the masses.

Excellent review and new information regarding facts that have set stereotypes and opinions, that have little basis in fact.

Thoughtful and thorough, this is an enlightening look at what white people have wrought.

Black Wave is a masterpiece. A free-wheeling, dystopian chronicle of recovery, books and working in bookstores, sex with Matt Dillon, LA, gay teens, and the end of the world. Yes, we get some of the same wonderful descriptions of queer misfits and mayhem we’ve come to expect from Michelle (the fact that there are now Michelle Tea imitators out there is indeed a sincere form of flattery—before her lesbian fiction was surely less colorful, less hip, less outlandish, less sad and hilarious at the same time, less wise). But don’t go thinking you’ve got this all stereotyped as a queer novel. Black Wave goes deep into the into the dark night of our collective soul. In sneaky Michelle Tea fashion, getting sober as the planet burns becomes one last defying act, a plea for life amid the ashes, and doesn’t something about that ring all too prophetic at this moment in time? Read this book for solace or for its pure pleasure, but don’t expect it to go off quietly once it gets into your head.

This well-written novel has several literary themes. It’s about the plight of the working poor; what it’s like to live on the “fringe” of society as a “queer” (lesbian) who’s addicted to drugs, alcohol and sex; the writer’s journey and the process of storytelling; and why it’s important to take care of, and be kind to, Mother Earth. This novel is like three books in one. Set in the Mission district of San Francisco, the first third of the novel reads like a juicy tell-all. When we first meet Michelle, she is a drug-addicted lesbian writer, a femme who wears lingerie as clothing and cheats on her devoted girlfriend, Andy. Michelle earns minimum wage working at a bookstore. She is so poor, she eats naked pasta with a blob of butter on it for a meal. She kills roaches with her bare hands. She finds her furniture on the street and lives in a dilapidated old house with eight roommates. When she starts doing heroin, she feels her life is about to spiral out of control and decides she will move to Los Angeles and start a new life. She does, and that’s the second part of the book. This is where Michelle makes her growth journey. Although she does stop doing drugs, she doubles down on the drinking. She knows she has a problem but cannot stop doing it. So the first two-thirds of the book read more like a memoir. The last part of the book takes a mythical turn, offering a dystopian view of the future of our planet. It’s part fantasy, part dire warning. When I’m done reading a book, I thumb through it to see how many pages I dog-eared or where I underlined any passages. The number of dog-eared pages tells me how good a book it was. This book had a lot of dog-eared pages, and they were spread throughout the book (not just in one or two sections). Meaning, there are many nuggets of pithy wisdom in these pages.Example: “How did Michelle want to spend the next 12 months? She hated questions like that. She hated having to have a plan, ever. She knew that any plan she came up with would be a little pathetic. She’d rather keep it open, invite the randomness of the universe to toy with her. I’ll See Where Life Takes Me, she said airily.”The only thing I didn’t get was, why was the book set in the 1990s? It seems like it would have been more believable had it been set in the future rather than the past since we know the world didn’t come to an end in the 1990s. There were a couple of time-period inconsistencies, too, such as Michelle’s surfing the internet and taking a picture with her phone’s camera. But these are trivialities.Overall, I recommend this book as entertaining and timely, alternately touching and teaching the reader in subtle ways.

One of the most provocative, hilarious, and engaging books I've read this year. Tea situates our current crisis retroactively in the '90s, making visible the environmental/political crisis that we only now can fully see. So smart, funny, and distressing! A beach read for our era of closed, contaminated beaches.

I waited and waited and waited for this book to come out and of course as expected, it was perfect. True to Michelle's dirty queer punk form it was magical and weird and great. I can never get enough of her writing.

perfect condition and a good read

I love Michelle Tea, and I love this book. What a trippy way to describe hitting bottom. This story is part memoir (like most of her work) and part dystopian future/end of the world/dream state....indescribable, really. I wasn't sure I'd like it, because I'm so fond of Tea's straight-up memoir style, but she definitely comes through with her usual cast of queer outcasts, drunken, drug-fueled relationship drama, and San Francisco 90s Riot Grrrl nostalgia. The L.A. last third of the book is where it gets really weird. I literally felt like I was experiencing a dream, reading through Tea's character drinking herself into oblivion while the world ends around her. The dream states and online hook-ups felt real, like that would be exactly how it would be to live in that place, at that time. I can't recommend this book enough. Maybe I'm biased, because Tea's and my life have mirrored each other's so closely, but I think anyone will find it a good way to spend your time.

This was such a unique and beautifully (uniquely so) written book. At first I was annoyed at the subject matter around a bunch of drug-taking waste-os, but it was a recovery story planted in a ferocious big beautiful story of the end-of the world. And the writing is so honest and original and beautiful and the distopian-ness so hopeful and gorgeous---I was loving it by the end.

just beautiful

Review

“In his career as an astronaut, Thomas Stafford saw it all: Gene Cernan’s fogged up pressure helmet, the mountains of the moon oh-so-close, a Soviet handshake in orbit. Stafford was truly one of those few who stood on the shoulders of giants and made history.”—Tom Hanks“As American flight commander of the first ever rendezvous-in-space with the Soviets, Tom Stafford started raising the Iron Curtain. A great talent, a great career—and still involved!”—Senator John Glenn“An intimate portrayal of space policy, especially its sometimes cantankerous, sometimes tranquil, but always interesting interactions between USA and USSR.”—Roger D. Launius, NASA Chief Historian

General Stafford's book was pleasingly done, both crisp and authoritative. He balanced technical and historical details quite well, so the book did not become mired down in details that only an astronaut could love. The only bone I have to pick with General Stafford's book is that he was simply not the first American to reach Baikonur as he claimed. For nine years another American, a space medicine scientist, flew back and forth from Langley AFB to Moscow, Baikonur and back to Langley. He did this several times per year. It does not hurt General Stafford's story or reduce his heroism at all. He is a brilliant hero. The problem is that one cannot believe one's own country's Intel agencies. General Stafford told what he knew. He just was not allowed to know someone had been there before him. In fact, General Stafford took the scientist back to Baikonur on his plane. He might have noticed that the Soviets hugged and shook hands with the loner who hitched a ride on the plane at the last moment. But if he noticed, he did not write about it.I knew the space medicine scientist personally and my book, "The Insider," explains his role in the Soviet scheme of things.Other than that one discrepancy, I recommend General Stafford's book for anyone who would like a simple, well-written history of this early section of the Space Race.

I have read several astronaut autobiographies and space history books over the years. In my opinion, this book is the cream of the crop. Stafford presents the history of Gemini and Apollo in a clear and interesting way. Lt Gen Thomas P. Stafford was one of the most technically skilled and accomplished of all the astronauts. And even though he flew 4 missions and commanded 3 of them, he isn't as well known as some other astronauts that actually walked on the Moon. If you are fascinated with NASA, and the early history of space exploration, I highly suggest you purchase a copy of this book. You will be very informed after reading this book. Thomas Stafford is a giant among men. 5 stars!

We Have capture is a great book about Tom Stafford and the Space Race. Michael Cassutt is an excellent author and for me is 2 for 2. I also bought his "Deke" Donald Slayton 5 star book. See my reviews. Michael Cassutt sure can write. We see Tom Stafford growing up in rural small town Oklahoma. He is the only son. He and his mom are decorating the Christmas tree when he hears the Japanese bombed Pearl harbor. His Dad asks Tom if he wants to go up in a plane. He does and is fascinated. He knows his life's calling. He graduates Annapolis Naval Academy as a Star Man near the top of his class but joins the Air Force as he believes they had the hottest planes. He becomes a super top fighter pilot and gets assigned to Edwards Air force base as a test pilot. So many of his friends and other pilots are killed. He starts going up in rank and gets accepted into NASA and after much training becomes an astronaut. Tom Stafford is deeply involved with the Gemini program especially rendezvous. He also circled the moon and tested out the LM and rendezvous with the CM in his Apollo mission. He got very close to the moon and got good data and pictures of the Sea of Tranquility the future Lunar landing site but did not land. That was for Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. He was big into Apollo/Mir missions, Apollo Soyuz. He has 4 flights on various programs. Unbelievable accomplishments.Tom set the highest speed record 28,547mph as a test pilot. He was in charge of Area 51... Dreamworld. No alien here?...but very top secret stuff. He becomes very good fiends with Soviet cosmonaut Aleksei Leonov( Aleksei is also a good space artist. Someday I'd like to get a small piece of his space art work if I can afford it) and has a hand shake in space. They become lifetime friends. One of Aleksei's daughters gets an alignment and dies. Poor Aleksei cries to Tom and says Soviet medicine is not so good and now his daughter is dead. We learn some about the cosmonauts and Soviet space and military officials. The cosmonauts were people just like our astronauts with wants, desires and feelings like us. We had major differences but a lot in common. Tom Stafford wants to introduce some cosmonauts to John Wayne the actor on a tour. Of course the US patriot John Wayne wants nothing to do with the "Commie bastards".However after talking to them and realizing they are humans like us he says "They aren't that bad"and accepts them. Tom Stafford was responsible for so much of American/Russian understanding and breaking down walls for both sides to move forward together into space exploration. We see him gaining stars. One, two and then a three star General in the Air Force. He says another General wants him to stay in the Air Force and he probably will get his forth star but his wife is having depression and can't handle Washington DC and being a General's wife with all the political/ public meetings so Tom Stafford eventually retires as a three star General. I can't blame his wife as Tom had a very eventful life in space and was always on assignment going all over the world and having to meet so many important dignitaries. Tom and her raise a fine family but later divorce. He becomes the unofficial/official US military/US rep to the cosmonauts and Russia. He goes to Russia many times and to funerals in Russia for fallen cosmonauts. Tom helped carry a cosmonaut's coffin with soviet Secretary Leonid Brezhnev. He was instrumental in helping to push the International Space Station through. So many problems with the Russians both with cost and personnel. Tom is the man as he is the worlds most experienced space rendezvous expert.Later Tom meets a petite blond at a party after his divorce. Right away she learns he is ex Air Force and rudely wants nothing to do with him. But she hears from someone General Stafford... She says you were a General and an astronaut? Now she is interested as she was married to a Master Sergent and didn't want that life again. It was slightly kind of funny. They date and are married.Tom helped develop much of the Air Force's top secret stealth technology and worked developing the B2 bomber. Tom is a businessman on the board of quite a few major companies but even after he retires from NASA and the Air Force he is the unpaid US rep to the Soviet space program. He drops what he is doing and jets over to Moscow and helps straighten out major problems. He was still active many years later helping US/Soviet space relations.Tom Stafford an international hero that helped the US and Russia come together for the Apollo/Mir, ISS and beyond space exploration. Tom was also a true protector of the US with his work on stealth technology and the B2 bomber. A truely amazing man who seemed to do it all. Thank you Michael Cassutt for both We Have Capture Tom Stafford and the Space Race and "Deke" Donald Slayton. Both excellent 5 star books.

A good read for the space enthusiast. Stafford really doesn't flood us with too many details in this book but his insight especially after ASTP is quite fascinating. I would have like to have more information on the two Gemini missions and the Apollo 10 mission personally but this book goes beyond the arena of so many other books on the glory days of the space program and takes us into the area only for the privileged few that make space policy. Stafford's influence and pure guts to facedown the Russians beginning with the ASTP flight and continuing on through the ISS is quite reveling. It is also interesting to get Stafford's perspective on the Mir / Shuttle flights after reading Walt Cunningham's book (who's opinion is diametrically opposed to Stafford's along with both of their relationships with George Abby). All in all this was slightly abbreviated for me, I feel it could have used more details but still a good read.

This is a well written account of Tom Stafford's life as an astronaut. He reveals a lot of insight as to the inner workings of NASA and the space program. He accomplished numerous goals and successes with some failures along the way. I recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in the space program.

Excellent book. Very profound, very professional and down to earth at the same time!!!

Tom Stafford along with the remaining Apollo and Mercury astronauts are a National Treasure, but the ghost writers the publishers use though aught to be taken out and horse whipped! Deke Slayton and Alan Shepard's book Moon Shot was told in the same wooden style. But I would still recommend them if you have any interest in this stuff at all. Someone like Walter Isaacson or my personal favorite David McCullough should be the ones writing our history.
